I'm Okra with this, their timing is right on cue. Cumbersome non-scientific rhetoric from broth sides of the debate gets very boring.

You know, this will either be really bad or really good... If they decide genetically modified foods won't hurt you then maybe the poorer countries will start allowing the genetically modified foods to be planted there.

Though it won't be a good thing if they say the foods are bad for you.

Jesus commanded His followers to feed the poor, as he himself did. Genetic engineering allows humans to do that. We've known this for years, ever since Norman Borlaug's work in the 1950's and 60's (that man basically saved 1 billion people from starvation). The opponents of genetically modified crops are preaching nothing but good old FUD. And while I have some concerns about the way Monsanto and other companies structure their intellectual property, when I read stories about things like golden rice being blocked by these worm-tongued activists, I can't help but think that Jesus would have some harsh words for them.

yogaFLAME: Considering genetic engineering is one of the new deadly sins that the catholic church recently pulled out of its ass (pops), I wouldn't hold my breath.

That's only if you're genetically engineering humans. Otherwise this guy would have been in serious trouble.

So I guess the consider it Pride to mess with what God has created. i.e. alter the DNA of plants. Unfortunately people have been doing this since the dawn of agriculture by selecting the best plants reproduce. Is it a sin to breed the two healthiest Golden Retrievers?!

Maybe the should consider the gluttony of wasting space and resources on inferior crops? Maybe they should consider that we are all going to starve to death if they continue to encourage people to reproduce ceaselessly?!

Thank You. Although, to be accurate, genetic modification first started when Ooog the hunter-gatherer first noticed that if the red cow and the white cow mate, you get a tan cow. Which makes me wonder, as always, why folks are upset about "genetically altered food". You've never eaten anything BUT genetically altered food in your entire life.

In an effort to find out whether genetically modified organisms harm human health or not, the Pontifical Academy of Sciences will be holding a study week in mid-May to hear what the scientific community has to say.

And the problem is?

Considering that the Catholic church put Galileo on trial for heresy in 1633 then did a really late apology in the late 90's, why the hell should anyone give a flying fark what opinions the Catholic church has on anything dealing with science.

Throughout history there has never been an abundance of food. All food is the product of technology. Apples, corn, tomatoes - all modified. Every food has been changed through selective breeding and grafting. For ten thousand years each attempt and improvement has changed the DNA of the plant. Now some people are up in arms about changes in DNA. You know what? If you're able to get up and have food, you should celebrate. We should all dance about how much food we have. Why is anyone fighting food advance? A very small percentage of the world's population is fortunate enough to have the luxury of turning down food. The rest of the world spends most of its time trying to get any food. You know why? Technological problems. They got dirt, they got water, they got sun. They lack the technical ability to till and enrich the soil. They lack the machines to plant enough to feed their families. They lack the hybrid plants that produce more food per acre. We need to spread all the technology all we can so all people everywhere can deal with the problem of too much food. We can't start getting picky because we've got enough food. That's just self-centered and racist. Unless you and yours are starting, you need to click here (new window)

Actually, you missed the first part of the sentence. The complete statement reads:

For this reason, it said, the issue of genetically modified organisms should be "faced without dogmatism and with common sense and responsibility, not with a barrage of mutual excommunications or, worse, lobbying disguised as a religious war."

It actually says the opposite of what you think it says.

DeadParrotSociety 2009-05-03 04:14:37 PM
GMOs are a catch-22. They allow for a large yield where there once would have been little. However, these plants also threaten native species and create dependence on the companies selling the seeds, because some GMO plants are non-germinating, so farmers must continuously buy (very expensive)seeds from producers.

I don't object to the concept of GMOs, but I think there's quite a few kinks to get worked out.

Breeding desirable traits into a plant isn't the same as injecting ocelet DNA into corn.

Mayah 2009-05-03 04:25:03 PM
They do have a point. We have to be careful in weighing the benefits and risk here. On one hand these modifications give us more and sometimes better food. On the other hand the long term consequences are unknown, such as if large fields of genetically identical corn would be more susceptible to a single disease decimating the crop. Or if large herds of genetically identical animals would be likewise a poor choice in the long run.

Mugato: Because the Catholic Church has always been right when it comes to science.

This isn't about science, it's about ethics. From TFA:

"There is a lot of propaganda being used by the two sides," Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, the academy's chancellor, told Catholic News Service April 29. "And for exactly that reason some scientific clarity is needed" to determine how safe these organisms are.

The arguments put forth by corporations in favor of genetic modification are not trustworthy, he said, "for the fact that they (corporations) are looking to make money."

And, he said, some of the activists who have been sounding the alarm against so-called "Frankenfoods" often do not cite sound scientific studies to back up their claims.

The Catholic Church simply wants to know if the agricultural industry and its critics are being honest in their claims about genetically modified food. All the science in the world won't do anyone a bit of good if we can't trust the scientists to report their findings truthfully.

Tyrosine 2009-05-03 04:53:15 PM

THIS!!! 1000 Times this!!!!

Genetically Modified (GMO) means ANY genetic modification that produces allele frequencies or combinations that did not occur in the absence of human intervention.

What MOST people mean by GMO is Transgenic. That being said, transgenics occur in nature in the absence of human intervention as well...

Mugato [TotalFark] 2009-05-03 05:04:34 PM
Mouser: All the science in the world won't do anyone a bit of good if we can't trust the scientists to report their findings truthfully.

Right, distrust in scientists. I'm not blindly saying that all scientists are 100% honest but why is it that people only doubt science when it might conflict with their political or economic agendas? This, evolution, global warming, etc.
