Great idea. What is scary about it?

What college kid has 2 hours to waste eating? There's pot smoking, threeway co-ed action, WoW, and keggers. The schedule is booked.

Scary tag? Does the img1.fark.net tag have the rest of the day off?

Yeah. Subby was wrong, though, because they don't MAKE them do it. It appears to be voluntary.

Offering this twice a month is considered MAKING them do something?
Scary tag is for subby.

I ate the food in the cafeteria fast because every one in there is a gigantic douchebag. Plus, I usually had to go to class in thirty minutes any way.

Five course meals twice a month? Hell, sign me up. What is there to complain about when you get that much nice food?! It beats ramen noodles...

"eat like human beings" ??? Were they eating through their assholes or something?

AnnoyingKidNextDoor 2009-05-03 01:04:11 PM
I'd like to see this happen at my school, but it's too much to ask as it is for our cafeteria to serve something that isn't soaked in grease.

No, only drinking through them.

Ima4nic8or: Great idea. What is scary about it?

I, too, think it's a great idea. Quite a few families never eat together, and quite a few never cook a meal. It's a new experience for some of these kids.

As to what's scary; have you ever listened to what passes for a teenager's conversation? They need all the practice they can get.

friedrice2003 2009-05-03 01:12:21 PM
I wish my school would do this...although knowing them they would shut down regular service, deny us the ability to use our meal plans, and charge like $30 for the "nice" dinner which would wind up being a crappy cut steak and some made from the box mashed potatoes

I'm thinking that the scary tag is meant ironically, like, its a scary thought for a college kid to waste two hours eating.

Hopefully I didn't just point out what everybody else was already thinking

ReBoot should never be considered obscure.

It would be awesome if my University did this. Except that my University cafeteria has never managed to make anything rally edible (food made in the dorms itself tasted better), so I would fear any sort of five course torture session like that.

But hey, if a few good cooks are preparing it, sounds like fun. I would probably scare off everyone sitting around me with conversation topics about rampant AI's or the Laughing God, but hey, that's what you get when the weird nerd chick shows up.

/would it be considered rude to start playing M:tG at the dinners?

I've seen what passes for student cooking too. People are pathetic eaters. They have no curiosity or initiative.

For a while when i started med school, people would have pot lucks to make it easier to get to know each other. My wife and I started off looking for recipes, buying stuff, cooking it, and taking it with us. Our dish was never too involved, but it was without exception, the most sophisticated dish that was brought. Most people just brought in some cheese and cream of whatever laden casserole they stuck in the oven with some broccoli and macarroni. There was one time when we had to take a salad. We got nice lettuce mixed with some more bitter varieties, good fresh tomatoes, cheapo goat cheese, and a nice vinaigrette I made. I mean, it was a FARKING SALAD. People were still shocked at what great cooks we were. I mean, fark, when a salad somebody brought makes the main dish you were responsible for look simple by comparison, you need to buy yourself a farking cookbook.

Of course, there were always the people who would bring a 2 liter bottle of coke to a potluck too.

/not fancy or too knowledgeable about cooking
//just that if we're invited somewhere, we like to be considerate and actually put effort into what we're bringing. Its' a sign of respect towards your host
///we stopped going. people eat way too much greasy and oversweetened crap. None of our dish was ever left over, and we never felt like taking leftovers from anybody else's cream of scalloped potatoes dish.

rga184: People were still shocked at what great cooks we were.

We have potlucks at work for the staff meetings. Some people always bring the same thing each time, either 2 liter bottle of Coke or potato chips.

Last year I made a daube of beef. Took 3 days to make (heat the meat in wine on day one, let it sit in the fridge for 2 days, cook it on day 3). Not really hard to do, very easy. You would have thought that I had spent the entire w/e in the kitchen. It took me less time to assemble it than the person who made some vegan casserole (that was disgusting) or the person who made hemp flour muffins (which were inedible).

I was fortunate to live in Simmons Hall my first two years at Penn State. It had a dinning room in the basement so You just kind ot stumble two two flights of stairs in your jammies and grab something. It was an all girls dorm too so we didn't have to worry about looking good for guys.

Food was whatever I could make into a sandwich and throw on top of a bowl of cereal and carry to the room. No you weren't supposed to take out food like that but the people at the doors never cared.

Because if I'm looking to hook up with two chicks at the same time, I'm going to ask a WoW player for advice.

I had an intro to consulting engineering class that gave us a formal dinner to practice etiquette, what silverware to use when, how to ask for things from the server, etc.

I like this idea - it's good practice for the real world.

friedrice2003

My college would pull a similar stunt to get people to come to football games. They'd close the cafeterias and move breakfast to the football field. Of course, since I was in pep band this just made it harder for me to get breakfast before I went up there to warm up...

Everyone changes schools as soon as they can.

qlenfg 2009-05-03 04:31:54 PM
That ain't nothin'. We had 7-course meals when I was in college. A burrito and a 6-pack from the corner store.

Apparently college kids of today never got sit-down meals at home or on holidays. And you probably don't have any non-virtual dates with the 'women' you meet on WoW.

Colleges need to add 'adult manners and dining' to the curriculum along with 'how not to be a dumbarse'.

JackieRabbit 2009-05-03 05:03:27 PM
Gon't get the scary tag, subby. Teaching college kis not to behave like pigs is a great idea. Someone needs to. I remember the days when men were required to wear jackest and ties to class, treat the women with dignity and respect, and all were required to take etiquitte classes.

Cool Hand Luke 2009-05-03 05:44:08 PM
F'ing awesome.

Getting educated about what you put in your body? Probably the most long-lasting lesson they'll learn in college.

Do these kids ever think about anything besides class warfare? I swear to god, next time somebody tries to start some radical pseudo-intellectual discussion at a party I'm going to drop kick a fool.

they are more likely to be the petite bourgeoisie than the proletariat. At least they aren't the lumpenproletariat.

wow, not one person in this thread realizes how screwed up it is for a christian college to do something like this?

let's spend thousands of dollars extra a month for our students to partake in something the sociopathic elite do often....fark the meek around us.

then again it's no different than the Vatican or what most psuedo-christians are like in America

How horrible, the students are learning to sit down, eat a decent meal and engage in conversation that doesn't involve a cell phone. Shocking! Horrible!! WWJD? I mean it's not like Jesus ever had a sit-down meal with his disciples,oh,wait...

Bathia_Mapes [TotalFark] 2009-05-04 12:46:45 AM
Not scary at all, but a great idea. And they're not "making" the students attend, but offering the "slow food" meals.
