Unless it's specifically used for fundraising, 700 Club TV shows, and other non-stop marketing/fundraising activities.

Twittering is super-lame, but twittering about your relationship with a deity you have never directly communicated with is off the charts.

It amazes me how much time and effort the anti-religous/Christian on Fark put into mocking the beliefs of others whom they claim to feel superior to. "Me thinks they doth protest too much."

First off, I hate it when people paraphrase that quote to mean something totally different than it does.

Second off, this thread isn't about "mocking the beliefs of others." This is about extending the use of cell phones and Twitter to church services - and if all you see is some attempt to mock religion as a whole, you're not looking very closely.

Eclipse: "Me thinks they doth protest too much."

Then you don't understand the context of that line (which, by the way, you mangled.)

Do I feel *generally* superior to someone just because they're religious and I'm not? No. (But many religious people I've met can't make the same claim.)

Do I feel my *critical thinking skills* are superior to someone who believes in a mystic deity? Probably.

However, you're missing the point. I don't know a single Atheist who begrudges anyone their personal faith. Contrary to popular belief, most of us secularists don't really care that someone else practices a religion. What pisses us off is when people try to encroach upon others with their religious teachings. When we're told something should be banned "because it's a sin", or when we're asked to observe religious rites in our civic institutions, or when people refuse to accept that their right to practice their religion ends exactly where my right to NOT practice it begins, then we get a bit disagreeable.

No, we should NOT have religious observances in our courts, in our legislative proceedings, or in our schools when it's initiated by civil servants.

It's not about feeling "superior", it's about feeling FREE. You are free to believe. I am free to refuse to participate in or observe your personal beliefs in any way. The religious right wants the Quid, but without the Pro Quo. It doesn't work that way.

Besides, Xians in America already fail the "are you really in favour of religious freedom" test. Don't believe me? Try this: Ask one if they'd be okay with putting "In Allah We Trust" on U.S. money. Not only are they probably going to be too stupid to realize it references the same God, they'll be exposed for their hypocrisy in that they only want freedom for religions they agree with.

Heck, they might even pull out the "this is a Christian Nation" beauty. Okay, Eclipse, you got me. I must admit that hearing that spewed by some twit ALWAYS makes me feel superior.

What I really think is interesting is the anti-religious to religious ratio present on Fark. About 1% of the United States population identifies as atheist.

The most recent ARIS report, released March 9, 2009, found in 2008, 34.2 million Americans (15.0%) claim no religion. Of which, 1.6% explicitly describe themselves as atheist or agnostic, double the previous 2001 ARIS survey figure.

There are far more "Fark atheists" than 1.6% of the user-base, which leads me to think that people who are part of Fark are, in general, more intelligent or educated than your average person.

As other studies have shown, education has a negative correlation to religious belief (new window).

So you have an abundance of these "Fark atheists," like myself, because the users of Fark generally are more educated which results in them having a higher tendency to be non-religious.

I agree completely. I don't care what a single person believes. I'd personally like them to believe as many true things as possible, but them believing in a god doesn't hurt me. It's when they get into powerful groups and legislate their religious views that I have a problem.

My aunt sent me a chain email about protesting the new coins that don't have "In God We Trust" written on them--you don't spend them, and you give them back if you get one somewhere. (And no, I don't remember which coins they were. First I'd heard of them.)

I sent her back an email asking if the Christian faith was so shaky that it felt threatened by a coin? I don't think my aunt is religious, but if she is, oh well--I don't need such idiocy being mailed to me.

/I've gotten much worse about this since I started hanging around Fark--take your brain-dead prostelitizing elsewhere. Practice whatever you want, but leave me out of it.

There were a handful of misprinted dollar coins a few years ago. Not likely to end up with one because there weren't many and they were going for a few times face value on eBay.

I sent her back an email asking if the Christian faith was so shaky that it felt threatened by a coin?

Based on statements made by the leaders of American Christianity, not only are coins a threat to their faith, but the only thing preventing them from farking box turtles is the Defense of Marriage Act.

skinnyartist it does seem that many institutions of higher learning beat the religious beliefs out of many students. that or their faith was not all that strong to begin with. on this site there are many who do not adhere to the live-and-let-live philosophy. waffles.
