Fark: 'this whole swine flu thing is over-hyped.'
Ron Paul: 'gotta agree with ya there dude.'
Fark: 'wait - you agree with us!? ok, then the swine flu thing isn't hyped enough'.
RP: 'that's completely insane, you know that right?'
Fark: 'STFU dude. I'm automatically against whatever you say.'

While Ron Paul is right about the hysteria, he is ultimately wrong in that if he had his way the government would do NOTHING, no matter how severe the situation got.

Yeah, because voting for the candidate we feel is best instead of voting for who we think will win is "wasting a vote", right?
Do the world a favor. Don't breed.

Well, my comment was a bit harsh anyway.
I should have said "Do the world a favor. Don't vote. Stick with horse races."

So does this mean that Ron Paul wants the GOP to stop screaming about closing the border with Mexico so dirty Muslim Mexican jihadists won't come here and make us sick so they can take our jobs?

The Iconoclast [TotalFark] 2009-05-03 11:42:56 AM
Something to think about:

While World War I did not cause the flu, the close troop quarters and massive troop movements hastened the pandemic, and increased transmission augmented mutation and may have increased the lethality of the virus.
This is from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic

In otherwords, through antigenic drift the viruses mutate ... and can get worse.

You know damned well there are two very legitimate schools of thought on that, the other being the pragmatic `lesser of two evils' approach. Are runoffs the answer?

You have to admit, he made the Republican race more interesting.

nekom: You know damned well there are two very legitimate schools of thought on that, the other being the pragmatic `lesser of two evils' approach. Are runoffs the answer?

And I reject the "lesser of two evils" approach, because you're still voting for evil. Call me an idealist; you'll get no argument from me.
But that's not what I'm addressing. What bugs me is the fact that the "throw your vote away" mentality is a self-fulfilling reality. It's only so because enough people believe it, and repeat it to others to make them believe it, and it's actually a filthy lie.

So we wound up voting for Changetm as a slogan, rather than Change as a reality.
Ron Paul wasn't a perfect candidate, and even I don't agree with all of his views. But he doesn't talk a line of bullshiat, and I respect that.
I'm not going to drop a judgment on Obama after a measly hundred days+ in office. I hope that he turns out to be a great president. I really do.
But a sinking feeling inside me says that we missed our chance to truly turn this nation around, and restore our Republic.

Ron Paul's views are more appropriately covered in the "saved first kiss until marriage" thread.

As a doctor, you would THINK he understood the need for prevention of disease spread, and you would THINK he would at least mention that.

Instead, he is much more suited to fundamentalist religious arguments, his bread and butter.

Shouldn't he be out claiming there are going to be food riots, or spreading more fear on the Alex Jones show? One day, hopefully, he will say something positive, and all his "supporters" will turn on him.

/Three decades of nothing but biatching is quite a record.

If you read the whole article you linked, you'll find that while the fear may be inflated, the actions of officials is not terribly out of line.

Dinki: While Ron Paul is right about the hysteria, he is ultimately wrong in that if he had his way the government would do NOTHING, no matter how severe the situation got.

Where does he say that?

Paul, who was a freshman senator during a swine flu outbreak in 1976, said Congress voted to inoculate the whole country at the time.

Twenty-five people died from the inoculation while one person was killed by the flu, Paul said, adding that he voted against inoculation.

I think that is what he is worried about. Knee-jerk solutions that cause more harm the the original problem did.

vygramul: If you read the whole article you linked, you'll find that while the fear may be inflated, the actions of officials is not terribly out of line.

I *did* read the whole article, and claiming that "the fear may be inflated" is like saying "the US economy may be experiencing rough times". There's more hype than actual sickness, with healthy people checking into hospitals to be screened, wasting resources that are needed by those actually ill.

I'm not saying that the officials should take NO action; I'm saying that the whole thing has been massively overblown.
And paranoia will destroy ya.

Actually, according to his philosophy, the government shouldn't do anything, which means when we get a virus that's a real problem, we would be in trouble.

Libertarianism: limited government. Public health is not an area that government should intervene, thus health crises are not the concern of the government.

GAT_00: Libertarianism: limited government.

So from "limited government" you draw "a government which does nothing". Interesting.

Public health is not an area that government should intervene, thus health crises are not the concern of the government.

Let's see that from the horses mouth, and in context.

I'm waiting.

HowlingFrog [TotalFark] 2009-05-03 01:20:12 PM
GAT_00: limited government.

You may also remember that "limited government" is a conservative value; not just a Libertarian value.
It's the concept that the government, especially the federal government, should keep it's interference in our personal lives to a necessary minimum.

This is the first thing he's said about that as I know. But given his opposition to government doing anything, and yes as I see it libertarian governments do absolutely nothing, he would have opposed safety measures. Hasn't he said he'd toss the FDA? I don't think he would favor having government stocks of anti-virals to dispense in the event of a flu pandemic, that would be government intervention into private life. Save yourself and if you don't it's your own fault.

HowlingFrog [TotalFark] 2009-05-03 01:27:38 PM
GAT_00: This is the first thing he's said about that as I know. But given his opposition to government doing anything,

Okay, stop right there.
You're guessing. And your guess is based on nothing substantial.
Let's cut this down to bite-sized morsels, shall we? Present ONE quote from Ron Paul that shows his opposition to the government doing anything.
Because if he believed that, he'd lobby to have the federal government completely done away with, and that's absurd.

mjoven1975 [TotalFark] 2009-05-03 01:28:11 PM
Ron Paul lost. Get over it, and while you're at it, take down the multiple bumper stickers adorning your vehicles.

Crosshair: I think that is what he is worried about. Knee-jerk solutions that cause more harm the the original problem did.

We've learned a lot since then. The Administration's response to the swine flu outbreak is a textbook case for how to deal with a potential pandemic (aside from Joe Biden). The hysteria came from the media, the GOP and right-wing talk radio.

The problem is that they did not know how strong the virus was going to be. If this virus had turned out to be as deadly as the 1918 virus, there would have been Hell to pay had they done any less.

His whole campaign was to remove entire parts of the government. What the hell would he leave?

Because if he believed that, he'd lobby to have the federal government completely done away with, and that's absurd.

If that wasn't what his campaign was all about, what was it? Because that's all I heard, and all I hear from all of you libertarians.

What was necessary to effectively run the federal government. It's hard to disagree that a lot of the fat needs to be trimmed. He believes (as do I) that more should be left up to the individual States.
Oh, and the Federal Reserve is a private bank.

I see what you're saying, but I suppose in reality he's been of the same opinion on this since 1976, so chronologically he wins.
