Religious superstitions are silly

Well, this thread is just going to be links to things that we think are weirder than this.

Case in point. (new window)

so, being cremated is 'bad for the soul' but murdering someone so that you can burn their body in your place is fine.

Ok.... only religion can allow for such a line of thought

I want to be cremated, my ashes scattered at favorite spots that I liked, and no memorial headstone of any kind.

They could just secretly bury their dead relative and say the relative was kidnapped by a cremation gang.

Only the uneducated would not know that in most Asian countries, they do not have "religion" per say, but a few thousands superstitions, varying from place to place.

So what's the difference between superstition and religion? Not being snarky. Just... if locals in a certain place believe in a certain supernatural thing, is that not religion?

A-Rth-Urp-Hil-Ipdenu 2009-05-03 09:30:44 AM
Well, cremation is a ridiculous waste of energy and this brand of religious superstition is no more silly than burying people in expensive wooden boxes decorated with metal bits the way we do now.

I wish I could just be put in a bag, buried somewhere and be left to decompose in...peace. But that would be illegal so cremation it will have to be.

Only the truly delusional think that there is a difference between having a laundry list of superstitions is different than a religion.

I agree with todagst...
imfallen_anglel.... isn't that what religion is. So, they don't have a book, does that change what a belief system is???

I don't think so.

You do realize that your making a distinction without a difference, and that the very point is about superstitious thinking, right?

Or are you uneducated in logic?

Doesn't this deserve a SICK tag instead of a WEIRD tag?

I mean, c'mon, it's gangs trying to make money off of killing people and selling the corpses to families who don't want to cremate their dead loved ones. That's SICK!

Religion has a figurehead, eg. Jesus for the Christians, Satan for the Satanists, L. Ron Hubbard for the Scientologists, etc.

/And Mary for the Catholics ... not sure where the bible says to worship Mary, but that's religious logic for you.
//I've never met (or heard of) a Christian who wasn't doing something obviously wrong which guaranteed him/her a ticket straight to Hell. Sad, ignorant bunch, the lot of 'em.

Religions usually have a systematic cosmology that encompasses an ethical structure, superstitions are just a collection of 'recipes' for producing a supernatural result. Religious traditions are likely to contain such recipes, but are much more likely to place them in a wider context of moral behavior and a goal other than obtaining personal power through supernatural means.

'Screwing virgins makes you virile' is a superstition. 'A lifetime lived in sacrifice and service, accompanied by respect show to the correct supernatural entity, is, in itself, an indication of the favor of the gods' is a religion.

Also, yours is a superstition. Mine's a religion.

This isn't just religion. It's the goddamn totalitarian state telling people what to do that takes this from mere backward, silly superstition to outright murderous barbarity.

I'm actually outraged and disgusted beyond words. I think I'm gonna go in a corner now, cower and weep over this.

So having a laundry list of superstitions with a figurehead or leader is completely different than just having a laundry list of superstitions? Stupid heathens.

No, no. I've heard of some very non-religious people who think it is a crime against humanity to hang a man who has murdered another man, but are enthusiastically in favor of killing off people who are too old and sick to be a "benefit" to society [however that might be defined].

buravirgil 2009-05-03 09:53:49 AM
The etymology of "weird" is anglo-saxon, meaning "fate". The connotation of "weird" implies purpose-- either the supicion, or the discovery, of a meaning. Most usage of "weird" is better served by is the word "strange".
