Is the f*cking HERO tag broken? What an awesome story.

That is an officer I'd proudly serve under.

I guess the HERO tag really is broken...

Why does this guy get a hero tag? Millions of people have lost limbs across the world, and they don't get a farking hero tag!

Role model - yes
Stubborn - yes
Rugged individual - yes
Soldier - yes
Hero - not necessarily

You guys need to define hero into something that is something that is worth the title. A man who gives up his life (or risks it with the expectation of dying)for others like the story about the guy who died saving two little boys? That's a hero.

This guy could have been blown up on a routine supply mission, or he could have been blown up on the way to save an orphanage. I'm not saying the guy ISN'T a hero, it's just that the running a marathon as a cripple doesn't make him one.

/before you go off on me, I'm a soldier too.
//tired of seeing worthless people get called heroes, the word means something, people, and using it like you use any other common positive adjective takes the meaning away from those who are true heroes.

Being a hero, my little troll, doesn't involve losing limbs or anything like that. It's a mercurial thing, but if you asked anybody who doesn't feel threatened by a cripple doing something just why they think this guy is a hero, I think most people who say that:

Somebody ballsy enough to slag it out despite tremendous adversity, against all odds, in an uphill battle, using his possibly greatest disadvantage as an asset, for a good cause is a hero.

Not only will you never know what it feels like to be a hero, but you are threatened by a crippled man.

hero noun (heroes) 1 a man of distinguished bravery and strength; any illustrious person.

You might have your own specific definition of what a hero is, but the rest of the world disagrees.

As I understand it, the purpose of a soldier is to become crippled or die.

Any soldier who fails to accomplish one of these things is just an ordinary soldier and not much more to say about them. Probably they just wasted their time following orders and selfishly staying uninjured and such.

But if they succeed, they get a medal and become the biggest hero ever!

If I were fighting in Iraq, I would run naked towards enemy soldiers while armed with a tennis racket. Hopefully I wouldn't encounter any similar Iraqis, who would attack me with their own tennis rackets, as it might take us days to hero each other this way.

Well he seems to be a kind of guy to be honored. There is 2 issues I have with this though.

1. Wouldn't a shorter distance marathon be a little better? He could have completed it instead of having the chance of his body failing or being damaged further because of the extra effort needed so soon.
2. He is not a Hero, just a veteran that should be honored. There is a small line of difference but it is there. Should he be treated less? Not really, but that's just me.

Guy does get bonus points for being hardcore.

Losing his legs, yes that's tragic. But did he do something selfless by attempting the marathon? No? So futile endeavor for the sake of one's pride... heroism!

"A soldier who lost the use of both of his legs in Iraq is today celebrating reaching the half way stage of the London Marathon, despite the race finishing last week."
"He was originally told he would never walk again, but he battled the odds and fought his way to the start line last week."

Holy shiat, people. Iraq invaded another country, too. Did all you farktards forget that piece of trivia, or has your hatred for the Bush Administration clouded all form of fact and reasoning and history from your minds?

This guy served his country, protecting other people, and now is in the situation he is in. He is not drowning in a self inflicted pitty pool or asking for donations for his 15 kids...

I'd serve under this guy if I were still active duty.

Of course Google would say that. They are notoriously liberal and anti Bush. War is the last form of diplomacy.

A Hero is, in this case, a Soldier who does what his country askes him, is injured in the process of doing so, and then, rather than laying about whining about how tough his life is, fights his way back to as much function as he can manage and uses that function for the good of fellow Soldiers/Heros.
I realise I've fed a troll (you) but simply hoped to educate you enough that you might become somewhat human despite your troll DNA.

I'm retired Navy. That doesn't constitute a troll. An uneducated and ignorant person such as yourself defines the word troll.

Since there seems to be a lot of discussion about this article, and not nearly as much reading of said article, let me clarify some points.

This man deserves the hero tag, not because he lost the use of his legs serving his country, not because he is running in a marathon, but because he is, at great personal sacrifice and I would imagine no small measure of pain, is doing this to raise money to help others. For those of you that are scared of run-on sentences, let me say again: He is a hero because he is doing this to raise money and awareness to help other people.

/he·ro - A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life.
//have you run a marathon after losing the use of your legs? Did you run said marathon to help raise money for others? Did you offer your life in sacrifice to your country?
///this man has met and exceeded all three criteria set forth by the The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language.

Ignorance is, in this instance, a person who fails to recognize he was not the one quoted, nor was he the one called a troll. Perhaps you should go re-read the posts. We both disagree with LouisvilleMale33.

These words are not compatible.

I think doing this is probably good for him physically and mentally. The fact that it is so long provides more of a mental challenge than a physical one. He is breaking it up into smaller parts, doing less than two miles a day. I could probably crawl two miles, if I had the motivation.

While the outcome or order of finish may be determined (or not), it appears the marathon is not finished.

This fellow appears to be a "full-fledged tank-paratrooper" and my hat is off to him.
