Trent probably hates 'Closer' now that it is a staple at every strip club in the world, but, damn! What a classic song!

I like "Sin" better. Not that "Downward Spiral" is a bad album, mind you, I just associate the works of "Pretty Hate Machine" more with love, loss, pain and binge drinking. You know, like everyone associates with something by NIN.

Oh, and get your panties out of a wad, Apple.

I agree...Pretty Hate Machine is still his best album...but, 'Closer' is still his best sounding song. I think Trent even said that 'Closer' was his most personal lyrics, but, wrapped in the most sugary sweet music he could do. Something like that!

'Sin' was always my favorite NIN song, and 'Pretty Hate Machine' my favorite NIN album.

I bought that album in 1995 or so when I started listening to NIN, pretty much just for "Head Like a Hole." It wasn't until about 2002 or so that I listened to the album all the way through and I remember thinking "What the fark? How come I didn't listen to the whole thing before?"

And then a bad breakup, lots of drinking, blah blah blah. The story of every NIN fan.

Yeah, I think I also purchased Pretty Hate Machine for "Head Like a Hole", then discovered the awesome that is the rest of the album. That one lived in my CD player for a month or two.

I might have taken the cake in that it took me the better part of a decade to listen to the whole album before I realized the awesomeness of that album.

Oh and yeah, it lived in my car CD player for a few months, too. Think I kept "Sin" on repeat every time for every time I went to/from the liquor store.

Eh, I've got innumerable bands I love which probably have farked up time signatures (atheist, death, dream theater, most of my other tech death / prog metal.)

But, honestly, NiN is far more accessible for most people than all that stuff.

I was at a strip club when they played "Sanctified." It was freakin' awesome.

Well at least folks were upset about the f-word, and not the scathing indictment of religion and culture as found elsewhere on that album. Or many like it. Frankly, I've always figured that if we just pitch fits over arbitrarily 'naughty' words, the rest of the world's problems will fix themselves! Yay! Look what we've accomplished!

//sometimes tires of hearing elevators crash on sine wavs, but loves NIN
///First heard "Sanctified" as an underage kid watching a stripper drag out some cocaine disconnected 'dance' in, of all places, Columbia, SC - immediately bought the album.

I doubt it. Musicians often tire of playing their songs over and over again, but I doubt that he hates because strippers love it. If anything, it's a compliment. If I had written something that people equated with an underlying sense of dread with a ton of electronic sex smeared on top, I'd probably be flattered to hear in it strip clubs 15 years later.

My favourite NIN song was always Wish.

The long version, from the Fixed ep.

In fact, a lot of the stuff between PHM (his breakthrough) and TDS (his commercial breakthrough) is industrial gold.

Apple can't find Downward Spiral *too* very objectionable--they sell it on iTunes. Along with the "Closer" video. And there's the matter of them approving the first version of the app (very nifty, by the way).

Reznor uses Apple products to create his music.

And posts pics taken with his iPhone.

And NIN recently did an endorsement for Apple's Main Stage product.

Considering he's been one of their most vocal supporters, Apple shouldn't anger the Reznor. But hey, more space for quality stuff like Baby Shakers and fart apps, huh?

The Downward Spiral throws me off because of one tune. I forget the name of it, but it's an instrumental in the middle of the album. It's a good track, but it's a rip off of a Xymox/Michael Brook tune that was on "Sleeps With Fishes" and I think one of the earlier Clan of Xymox albums. I've always wondered if it was an intentional cover, or an unintentional rip off.

Anyone know? It's always bugged me.

Okay, let me rephrase. It's rare to find a song that rocks that hard with such a farked up time signature that doesn't suck dead dog cock because the band is more interested in doing some weird farked up thing musically than making a good song. Better?

As an aside, I was at a Microsoft conference last year (MMS) and before my session started they were playing Closer (unedited) over the PA. I thought it was a little strange.

CentralValleyCali 2009-05-03 11:21:45 AM
I think they suffer from the same thing my IT shop suffers from. We're huge and there are a lot of people doing the same thing. No because we are screwed up, but because we are a large organization. When people call us and find that the Help Desk doesn't know who they are they are upset and think we don't care.

I think they have a few people on the group to ok the apps and some are more conservative then others; and some more liberal then others.

They need to standardize the process already. 1 Billion apps though, they're doing something right.

PHM is ridiculously dated. I'm honestly not sure if I've ever listened to the album all the way through. Something I Can Never Have is about as schmaltzy as it gets and Kinda I Want To is just meh. Some good stuff on the album, but it's just a more guitar-heavy Depeche Mode.

Bought Pretty Hate Machine in 96. Went through a tape, and then two CD's. I found it right after the first breakup with a girl I was dating at the time. No drinking or drugs, but I felt like killing myself everytime I listened to that record. Still my favorite.

Second favorite NIN album (technically EP) is Broken.

Dream Theater would like to speak to you in genre, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones would cross genre.

Can't listen to Pretty Hate Machine without putting in Tori Amos' Boys For Pele right after.

I liked NiN before, but loved after The Fragile. "The Great Below" is one of my favorite songs, as is The Fragile itself.

How many farkers do you actually expect to even have Sleeps w/ Fishes? Though now I'm curious to a comparison, haven't listened to that cd in eons!

I figured more than a few. I thought Xymox was a bit more popular. Michael Brook is pretty damn cool as well.

You know, that whole 4AD thing.

From the mouth of Reznor:
Everyone - let me be clear. I love Apple products and as goofy and out-of-touch as their app approval process / policy is, I will still use them because they work 1000X better than the competition. This is not a debate, it's a fact. The iPhone is THE most elegant, modern smartphone at this point in time and it's perfect for what we want to do with the NIN app - except for the ludicrous approval process, and that's what I want to draw attention to.

Android is cool, but nobody has an Android phone. Blackberry is OK but the hardware is inconsistent and WinMo straight-up sucks balls. If Apple doesn't get it together, we will most certainly make it available to the jailbreak community. I didn't invest in this app to see it languish on the sidelines from an idiotic policy while this tour is in full swing.

I lol'd at this on Trent's twitter:
"Apple rejects the NIN iPhone update because it contains objectionable content. The objectionable content referenced is "The Downward Spiral"
6:39 PM May 2nd from TweetDeck

Not even sure where to start with that one.

Sigh, :(

As a recent NIN fan I have to say I have not listened to the earlier stuff nearly as much or as throughly as I should.

I really REALLY want to see them again.
