They never heard of Cheerwine before? Pfft. Next thing you'll tell me is that they've never had Utz before, either. Or been to Sonny's.

It's crazy.

Even worse - those poor misguided folks in Davidson county think Lexington barbecue is proper North Carolina fare.

/Bill's, Parker's, and Mitchell's - there is nothing else that can respectably be called North Carolina barbecue.

alright, Carolinians - I'm headed to Winston-Salem in a week. Where's the best barbecue? Eastern or Lexington style, either one.

WTF is this Lexington style you speak of? Its NC vinegar vs. Texas hickory smoked. And, having lived in both places, Tx is superior by far.

I FRIGGIN' LOVE CHEERWINE!

Well, clearly. Bojangles is like unto mana from heaven.

If there is one thing I miss from back east, it's chicken biscuits... And biscuits in general... And barbecue (not Lexington crap, real barbecue)... And a selection of good places to get a steak that aren't expensive steakhouses...

On the other hand, I couldn't get awesome pizza at 3:00 AM back in Winston, and there sure as hell weren't three good dim sum places in walking distance, so it's a tradeoff.

bluesxgirl 2009-05-02 11:19:58 PM
i made devil's food cake with diet cheerwine this past week. iced half of it with vanilla cream cheese icing, the other half was just lovely plain.

I hate to break it to you if you are on a BBQ quest or something but Winston-Salem is a rather lousy destination. Mr. BBQ on Peterscreek Pkwy is about the best you can do, it is at least authentic and goes back a few decades. There are a few new places I have not tried but don't expect WS to rival other NC locales.

Screw cheerwine, gimme some liver pudding!

Relatives in Charlotte used to bring coolers of the stuff to WV for us.

Fried up like a sausage patty with syrup with eggs... Heaven...

I found Cheerwine here in Missouri once. Oh man that stuff is so good it's almost worth moving to North Carolina for. I mean I would first have to find out how good the stip clubs are in NC. But barring that I might have to move there.

oh, and mt olive jalapeno/texas pete pickles are the most addictive thing ever. we have been craving them so badly, i use the juice to make a simple vinaigrette salad dressing (pickle juice, pepper, oregano, parsley, garlic, and olive oil). forgot they were a north carolina company too :D

i'm a midwestern transplant to south carolina, but i do enjoy the food and the people down here a lot.

Lexington style is where someone runs around to warn everyone what's about to be fed to them.

Also known as Paul Revere style.

I went to a funeral in North Carolina a few years back, and my family brought home approximately 10 cases of Cheerwine. I took 3 myself, my parents took about 4, and my cousin took 3.

Your booty shivers me timbers 2009-05-02 11:27:31 PM
I so wish we had a Bojangles near where we live now. It was awesome to be able to get a country ham biscuit or cajun chicken fillet biscuit any time back in college. Of course if we did have one nearby we'd get really fat really fast from being unable to resist these things. Getting older sucks - what happened to the days when we could eat anything and never gain weight?

DragonIV 2009-05-02 11:33:18 PM
North Carolina was the last place I could find Blenheim Ginger Ale in the grocery stores (Harris Teeter, as I recall). Cheerwine was ok, but Blenheim was the bomb.

/yes I know about south of the border. It's not exacly right next door, and I drive to Florida maybe twice a decade.

Cheerwine with a Cherry Mash.

In the glass bottle, made with real cane sugar, or GTFO!

Charlotte. That place should be annexed by SC.

Ikimasen 2009-05-02 11:40:32 PM
Anybody wanna road trip to West Jefferson? We can get cases of glass bottle cane sugar Cheerwine.

And, I mean, of course NC barbecue is a fantastic, wonderful thing. I see no reason to compare it to what they do in Texas, totally different things. Like comparing spaghetti and lo mein.

for the most part ... not really that great. At least around Charlotte. Or maybe I didn't go often enough.

ciberido 2009-05-02 11:42:44 PM
As long as I have hushpuppies to go with my barbecue, I don't mind whether it's Lexington style or eastern style.

You want to try a cultural barrier? Try explaining a hushpuppy to a Korean.

They have this abomination in Korea they call "corn bread." It's like a loaf of Wonderbread with whole kernels of corn mixed in like concrete. It makes me cry.

Veteran of the Cola Wars 2009-05-02 11:42:54 PM
I can take a 10 minute walk down the road to Mast's General Store and get Cheerwine in a glass bottle, with cane sugar.

Almost frozen, so cold that the first few sips hurt. Your fingers almost stick to the glass.

And it is oh so good when it is 110 degrees outside. With 100% humidity.

Benevolent Misanthrope [TotalFark] 2009-05-02 11:44:13 PM
I'm going to Winston-Salem to visit a friend. She tells me there are two basic styles in town - Eastern (vinegar and pepper) or Lexington (some tomato in the sauce).

CnFlght: WTF is this Lexington style you speak of? Its NC vinegar vs. Texas hickory smoked. And, having lived in both places, Tx is superior by far.

berylman: On 2nd thought, go to Little Richard's on Peace Haven.

I'd heard of them - they're on the NC BBQ Assoc. Historic trail site as best Lexington style.

Thanks for the warning.

I generally prefer Texas style, but I'm open to trying the local as well. I actually like South Carolina mustard-based sauce, which I've never seen anywhere else. But we'll see.

Thanks for the recommendations. :)

In North Carolina, you can't serve alcohol in a full-nude establishment. There are two places in Wilmington, Pure Gold and Dockside Dolls. Both owned by the same guys. Dockside Dolls is dry and full nude. Pure Gold sells alcohol and is topless. They run a limo between both locations.

'Course, if you want a $10 HJ, head north to J-ville, where you get to be sloppy seconds behind every Marine with a day pass.

/Hope you like traffic.
//And tourists.
///And retirees.
////Did I mention traffic?
