I imagine any Republicans in 1861 Georgia were firmly against secession.

"The party of Lincoln" was not unanimous on the issue of secession. The Republican Party at the time of the 1860 election was a deeply divided party, and it's a testament to Lincoln for bringing the Sewards and Chases and Bateses together. A fair number of ex-Whigs and western Republicans had to be sold on the issue.

Exactly. I'm sure these same people are the most flag waving, American can do no wrong, so fark You types until...oops, an election they don't like, so we're going to pout and threaten destroy the Union. How very fifth grade of y'all.

of course its not a repeat.
Back then it was Dixiecrats who wanted to secede.

It sounds like the republican politicians are going to play of the fears of their most retarded citizens and make a power grab at supreme leadership... For the good of the people. Of course.

/To the 1/3 of the republicans in Georgia. What's the matter? If you don't like this country, you can pack up and leave it. You just can't call your self patriotic or even loyal Americans. Sorry, not yours. That's only for people willing to work together across the political spectrum and ethnic backgrounds.

By the way, no significant group of Republicans actually favors secession. Republicans simply can't be counted on to answer such a question, especially in an anonymous poll, with any sort of seriousness.

YHBT. YHL. HAND.

hubiestubert [TotalFark] 2009-05-02 04:27:28 PM
This is why the party is in trouble.

Folks who don't know a damn thing about the basis of the party that favored the ideals of a joined republic, by, of and for the people...

Civics education. Support it, please.

I can't fathom how any state would feel they'd be successful in seceding from the U.S. these days. I'm no Constitutional scholar, but I know our great paper says no state is allowed to maintain its own military, nor is any state allowed to declare war on any other state or on the United States.

So how they think they would actually achieve this is a mystery to me. I guess what they're talking about is a "revolution" of some sort, but the federal government will put a quick stop to that shiat.

Like Tony Soprano said, once you're in, you're in forever. There's no getting out.

Coronach 2009-05-02 05:06:02 PM
I can see it now. They secede from the union and the rest of us just go along with it and humor them into thinking they really seceded.

Oh, they'd try.

And then they'd start to starve, and realize that without the Fed, it's a damn sight harder to keep track of those pesky standards for food, drugs, fuel, and the like.

All those things that the Fed does, they'd either be forced to do themselves, contract out to do, and still would need to act as a watchdog for on their own. Plus, there are a ton of enforcement duties that would be dumped back into their laps, Federal aid for schools would evaporate, not to mention all the extras thanks to the DEA and EPA and the rest would just up and disappear.

It sounds nice in theory for some folks, but these are folks who have no idea HOW MUCH they rely on the Fed.

This is what cracks me up the most about the secession talk, whether it's Georgia, Texas, or whomever. Any state that leaves the US in this day and age would be in total anarchy within 6 months.

I think after all these years I have finally figured out the difference between a die hard Democrat and a die hard Republican.

A die hard democrat looses an election they thought they should win threatens to move to Canada.

A die hard republican looses an election they thought they should win threatens to destroy the republic.

The same SCOTUS that said secession was invalid is the same one that said Dred Scott was property. I don't think that a 1860s decision is still 100% valid and not subject to being over turned.

Also Habeas Corpus was suspended at the time which means the justices could have been arrested if they issued a decision the prez didn't like, so they really COULDN'T decide secession was valid.

Sorry about the slam; I just got back from the SERUG GIS conference on Thursday, and I must say that the city looked like an Atlanta "at the beach". Overall, it wasn't too bad, but I saw alot of racial disparity in the neighborhoods around the city.

A Dark Evil Omen 2009-05-02 05:35:02 PM
The South gets a lot of shiat that is undeserved. However, what is incontrovertible fact is that in choosing the Republican party as the standard-bearers of the Confederacy they've created a monstrosity that combines the worst of both worlds. The inadequate Confederate governance, aristocratic bent and "states' rights trump civil rights" attitude coupled with the ruthless and destructive Northern capitalism and warmongering, and a heavy dose of the Abolitionists' crusading Christianity to top of the mixture. The worst elements of antebellum America, all neatly tied up into a revolting abomination of a political party.

Modern "rebels" who support the Republicans? You are supporting the worst of the South and the North, and nothing of the positive ideals the South did have. You are as confused, ill-informed and ultimately self-defeating as a West Virginian with a rebel flag bumper sticker.

So, go on. Secede if you've a mind to, and if you can convince even a small majority of the people in your state to support it. I promise there'll be no invasion from the rest of the union this time.

And when your monster runs amok and your "nation" collapses into starvation and depredation in less than a year, come back and talk. I'm sure you'll be allowed to rejoin the Union, even on favorable terms. But don't ever threaten secession again, or talk about the "South rising again". That nickel will have been most thoroughly spent.
