Drew's very subdued. Exclamation points are too exciting.

I think it should be a law that everyone only has 3 exclamation they can use throughout their entire life.

You can tell a movie is going to be awesome when the synopsis on the back cover is riddled with exclamation points.

The exclamation mark was introduced into English printing in the 15th century, and was called the "note of admiration" until the mid 17th century.

During World War I, to reduce expenditures on printer's ink, American newspapers were only allowed to use one exclamation point per page.

I lost a lot of respect for my sister-in-law when we began to e-mail on a regular basis.

She writes like this! It's truly annoying!! It's like talking to a girl who raises her voice inflection at the end of every sentence!!!

I hate reading postings or messages from people that are plastered with exclamation marks. "OMG!!! This is soooo cool!!! Guess what??!! We're going to the mall!! to eat cockroaches and drink drain cleaner!!!!!"

Always reminds me of a small nervous dog that won't stop yapping.

You know what else is a sign of sloppy writing?

Stupid teenagers using tags to emphasize something that couldn't be inferred from their text otherwise.

Example: Jane is totally {sarcams mode}cool{/sarcasm}

And this crap is considered okay these days, just like Twitter, that crippled version of MSN.

/Yeah, yeah... My lawn...

That's socially-induced? As a result? Of constantly being smacked down? In school? For voicing an opinion?

Yeah, if you're going to use tags, at least make it XML-compliant.

I never use more than five consecutive notes of admiration (!!!!!), and only save those sets for the rarest of occasions. Ordinarily, you're going to get one, two, MAYBE three from me.

Neither, just easier to say, especially when email addresses used to look like this:

Keith Mano explains the proper usage of exclamation marks:

"They may be used only in dialogue, and then only when the speaker has just been disemboweled."

ToasterRadio 2009-05-02 04:17:23 PM
A panda walks into a restaurant, sits down and orders a sandwich. After he finishes eating the sandwich, the panda pulls out a gun and shoots the waiter, and then stands up to go. "Hey!" shouts the manager. "Where are you going? You just shot my waiter and you didn't pay for your sandwich!"

The panda yells back at the manager, "Hey man, I am a PANDA! Look it up!"

The manager opens his dictionary and sees the following definition for panda: "A tree-dwelling marsupial of Asian origin, characterised by distinct black and white colouring. Eats shoots and leaves."

swahnhennessy 2009-05-02 04:17:46 PM
I pretty much only use them to hint at sarcasm. There are very few times where I am tempted to insert an exclamation point as valid punctuation.

My mother uses exclamation points all the time. The thing is, I'm pretty sure if she was saying whatever it is out loud, she would be yelling gleefully.

And she calls her husband her BFF.
