To be fair, PETA has been known to give funding to convicted arsonists.

Asa Phelps: To be fair, PETA has been known to give funding to convicted arsonists.

Quite true. And Tim McVeigh was a veteran. But what the document says refers to people devoted to animal rights are suspect much teh same way the previous document over-reached in regards to veterans. Since the overwhelming majority of each group's members are pretty much normal people, these reports are worse than useless.

This could easily be cited incompletely or entirely out of context, particularly given the slant of the sites I've seen it reported at. Still, I am keeping an eye on this. It's not as though leaders have never used the means at their disposal to marginalize political enemies. I like Obama so far...but anything can happen. One of our jobs as responsible citizens is to not let our hard-ons cloud our judgment.

It's not so much that, as it is a signal that the new overlords are just as clueless as the ones they replaced.

But the rabid forces on both sides won't take a moment sit down and admit that.

It seems these reports are more or less saying "Be suspicious of anyone who doesn't fit the mold of average American citizen." It makes these reports on "dangerous extremists" pointless if you identify members of large, generic groups as potentially dangerous.

Both pro-life groups and PETA are relativly popular, and the majority of such aren't going to get more "extreme" than going to a peaceful protest.

I, for one, appreciate the clever pun.

Is everyone too fired up to think, "these are often common noticeable features and interests of those who are proven to have violent radical views," not "this document says if you like any of these things you are a suspect in a government investigation" ?

I mean I like good hyperbole as much as the next guy, but come one. This is like complaining that a search warrant is out for a guy wearing a black hoodie, and saying, "HEY JUST BECAUSE I HAVE A BLACK HOODIE I AM NOT A CRIMINAL AARRRGGH!"

It's just things to keep an eye out for, not an indictment of everyone who has or does any of those things.

Subby (and hotair) failed reading comprehension.

The DHS lexicon says that most extremists have certain identifying topics. Anti-immigration extremists are against driver's licenses for illegal aliens, skinheads frequently wear Doc Martens, and PETA is not mentioned at all.

What subby and hotair seem to be missing is, if A then B does NOT mean if B then A.

If you are an anti-immigration extremist, you are probably against driver's licenses for illegal aliens. However that does not mean that being against driver's licenses for illegals makes you an anti-immigration extremist.

If it rains, the ground will get wet. But if the ground is wet, that doesn't mean it's raining.

The best part is, this isn't really even a report. It's a damn lexicon for the other two reports that came out. Somebody on the right wing just thinks that they can bring up the "OMG Obama thinks veterans are extremists" lie again, or that they can get some political traction out of the fact that there's nothing in there about Muslim extremists.

Talk radio hosts and republican bloggers need a constant diet of faux outrage to keep themselves going. They are like Pandas in a way.

"(U) rightwing extremism: ...and those who are mainly anti government and reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority. This term also may refer to rightwing extremist movements that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration."

Isn't that the definition of Libertarianism, at least the first half. I think they like to muddy the waters on this by implying they are oopsed to immigration in general, when in actuality, it is illegal immigration that is the real concern. Of course it would not be PC to make such a distinction and and call someone who broke the law a criminal, that just makes no sense at all

Yawn. Just more butthurt right wingers.

Hey, that's where the terrorist threat in America comes from these days.Obviously.

"Fascism comes from the left."
Hahahahaha. Hoo, yeah, right. Whatever. Wow. Out there.

I guess that's why the wingnut knuckle dragger right has created a bullet shortage. Because the psycho black heli wierdos are gearing for WWIII in response to all the, uh, 'tyranny' they perceive around them. The little voices that manage to penetrate their tinfoil helmets tell them so.

Extremists?

You mean like this guy (and his wife) who was a domestic terrorist and blew up buildings and killed people in the 60's and recently said he didn't regret it and added he wished he'd bombed more? The same guy recently photo'd stomping the American flag into the mud?

The same guy who helped get Obama's whole 4 years of political experience started and in essence helped get Obama in the Whitehouse?

1.bp.blogspot.com

Yup. Extremists are dangerous.
