Well, he kinda peaked with that first book, so it's to be expected that he'd become bitter.

Why people get so angry about something that doesn't affect them in the slightest is beyond me.

I think he enjoyed writing the shower fight scene in Ender's Game a bit too much.

It's been amazing to me for years now that somebody who could show such depth of thought and capacity for reasoning in his novels can be so off-the-hinges when it comes to the real world.

Well, comedians often battle severe depression. A logical writer battling illogical feelings is certainly possible.

Etchy333: I wonder what Heinlein would say on the subject. (new window)

He'd say that government should stay the fark out of the marriage business. Oh, and something about this urn being very, very cramped.

I went to one of his book signings once. The real reason that Ender's Game has yet to be made into a movie? He's the most arrogant, pompous p.o.s. excuse of a human being. The entire hour was nothing more than anectdotes of how superior his talents were, whether it was back in his twenties when he worked in theatre and knew so much more than anyone else, or how the people trying to adapt Ender's Game for the big screen now just can't get it right. Even Hollywood doesn't have a big enough fool willing to work with that micro-managing douche.

He also gushed about the movie "Troy." Seriously Card... Troy?

And in regards to the gay rights issue, of course he is going to support marriage, especially as it relates to breeding. He has a herd of at least 6 kids. I wonder how he would feel about my gay cousin and the 3 high-risk children he adopted from foster care. I suppose that's destroying society in his world view. Even if he trumped up the article's language for a more conservative audience, that's no excuse.

Some people only have one great book in them. Harper Lee gives us the spectacular To Kill a Mockingbird, and never publishes another book. And she didn't have too. Mockingbird is one of America's great novels. Her work was done.

Other people only have one great book in them, like Card and his Ender's Game, but don't stop publishing. They keep churning out pile of crap after pile of crap, publishing books in-between popping up into public life to lecture us all on whatever crosses his mind at the moment. And then he publishes what might be the worst novel of all time:

ecx.images-amazon.com

So please, Orson, put down your pen and just go away.

I thought that was essentially a novelization of a video game that has yet to see the light of day? I saw the book, but I haven't seen much on the actual game.

If I recall correctly, in one of the later Ender books, there was a species of aliens with an unusual tradition. They would, after someone had accomplished something worthy of being called their lifetime achievement, they would immediately honour that person by ritually disembowelling them and planting a tree in the middle of the corpse.
Perhaps Orson should consider that he's already completed his great work and have the same done to him.

/true the descolada virus would grant the alien victim an afterlife, but maybe swine flu is close enough

There is no need to overthrow the government in a democracy.

The best part about the California constitution is that it values democracy over judicial authoritarianism. If the state court interprets the state constitution in defiance of the majority, the majority can always amend the constitution in defiance of the court.

And if the state supreme court justices continue to defy the majority, defiant justices can be voted right off the bench and into the street. Californians have kicked liberal activists off of the supreme court before, and they can do it again.

Stop Orson. Just stop. I loved the Ender's Series (the first four), and even enjoyed Alvin Marker. However, your vicious swing to religious nutjob taints my enjoyment of books I've treasured since i was a kid. Just stop.

I never really understood why people are so obsessed with Card.

Yeah, he wrote some pretty good sci-fi novels. That doesn't make him a prophet. And so when it turns out that he's batshiat insane...

shrug.

I loved it in the intro to Ender's Game when he said that all the academics who dismiss the way he makes his characters speak as unrealistic cannot say for certain how kids talk when no adults are around and that his book is dangerous because he challenges the foundations of child psychology.

WTF is wrong with some people. From polling on 538:

"In surveys, 72% of Americans support laws prohibiting employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation."

"But people do not uniformly support gay rights. When asked whether gays should be allowed to work as elementary school teachers, 48% of Americans say no."

"64 percent of voters aged 18-45 supported either gay marriage or civil unions, but only 45 percent of voters aged 65 and up did."

How do people justify this in their minds? The idea that gays shouldn't be discriminated against but shouldn't be allowed to teach or get married.

It takes a lot of explaining to some people that being gay isn't the same as being a pedophile. . .and a lot of those same people still won't see the difference after you explain it.
