Okay, I can't be the only one who thinks that sounds great.

Right?

/right???

Occam's Chainsaw [TotalFark] 2009-05-02 03:04:35 AM
Could they just not afford a bass and instead substituted some beardy guy going "BUM ba bum bum ba BUM BUM"?

TempeSun [TotalFark] 2009-05-02 03:07:00 AM
That was pretty damn good. Unexpected! But, good!

dillenger69 [TotalFark] 2009-05-02 03:44:13 AM
It's ok, but it's no Elvira.

I'd have liked it mostly a capella with only drums since they are all singers.

deadsanta 2009-05-02 04:11:23 AM
Sad like an a-capella version of hairway to steven.

SuperCatBarf [TotalFark] 2009-05-02 04:14:51 AM
It's not horrible, but it's kinda pointless. It's not like they made it their own in any way...but hey, that's modern country.

Bad.

This must be a joke. Nobody in their right minds would put out this kind of song as a representation of their best work.

Warpigpen 2009-05-02 07:27:48 AM
That was the coolest thing I've heard lately from any musical genre, cover or otherwise.

9/10

Buddha Belly 2009-05-02 07:52:10 AM
Better than the original.

peachpicker [TotalFark] 2009-05-02 08:15:16 AM
This is far and away the best cover of that song: Dracula's 77 Nation by DJ Not-I.

Courtney Cox-Zucker [TotalFark] 2009-05-02 08:26:12 AM
I was expecting something very countrified. That was kinda... Talking Heads-esque?

TsuZi 2009-05-02 09:10:10 AM
My old band opened for them once. That's my entire, pathetic, claim to fame.

You have GOT to be shiatting me.

My band was playing at a county fair a few years ago where the Oak Ridge Boys were also playing later that evening. We're setting up on our stage during their soundcheck, and the Oak Ridge Boys' band breaks out into this great, tight, funky version of Steely Dan's "Josie".

Those dudes could really play. It was kinda sad to hear them going from that to "Ooom-papa-mow-mow" for the blue hairs.

Twice as better.

For those saying this version is better than the White Stripes, I beg to differ. Here's the White Stripes melting the faces of the audience at the Grammy Awards: pops (new window)

Also, that Dracula 77 Nation version was surprisingly good. Thanks.

MisterLoki 2009-05-02 09:54:33 AM
That wasn't terrible.

What would have been great is to have them do the Elvira breakdown in the middle of it -

/Giddy-up - ah um bup - ah um bup - a mao mao - Giddy-up!

CarnySaur 2009-05-02 10:40:46 AM
That sounds a lot like Kris Kristofferson.

FreeLoveFreeway 2009-05-02 10:42:16 AM
My heart's not on fire for that version. I prefer the one sung by Italian soccer fans.

"Seven Nation Army" is probably the most covered rock song in recent memory. Link (new window)

RealityChuck 2009-05-02 10:57:04 AM
Perfectly respectable cover version.

styckx [TotalFark] 2009-05-02 11:38:59 AM
That was awful

Where do I buy ear bleach?

Zombie Eater 2009-05-02 11:47:06 AM
The piano kills it...I'd like to hear it over bluegrass or perhaps pipe organ.

/what? The backing vocals sounded almost apocalyptic.

Farkomatic 2009-05-02 11:53:11 AM
I'm no fan of country music. There's nothing wrong with it - it doesn't suck or anything - but it's just not my cup of tea.

But my guilty pleasure is the Oak Ridge Boys. I've seen them at least a dozen times and whenever they come within 100 miles of home, I go see them.

Those type vocals blow me away and I can't get enough of it. They actually have more rock-based tunes as opposed to twang and their guitar player (I think his name is Don Carr) is a stud player - he can get it done. Great tone, great versatility, and a fluid player. The drummer is the guy with the long beard's son and he's actually very good. All in all, the backup band is great too.

apeiron242 2009-05-02 12:06:54 PM
Neat.

It's that and/or Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy".

That sounded like Led Zeppelin at the end.

QU!RK1019 2009-05-02 12:15:47 PM
That just sounded like a glorified wedding-band cover.

Trainspotr 2009-05-02 12:39:15 PM
I kind of liked it, but it could have been better with less instrumentation.

Although, I don't really like where this is going. How long until every country star who hasn't had a crossover hit in 30 years is covering something new and hip? What's next? The guy who sang "Swingin'" covering the Decemberists?

What hath Rick Rubin wrought?

DD44Dostivei 2009-05-02 12:54:13 PM
love the stripes

hate the song

prefer the statler bros over the ORB

Jack White seems to agree. Link (new window)

Seven Nation Army and Hey Ya are the two most important songs in the 2000's.

With bonus De Stijl goodness, awesome.

Devolving_Spud 2009-05-02 04:21:07 PM
I thought that was pretty darn good. I was expecting more twang.

Get off my lawn.

They could afford to record whatever they wanted to while you were busy sitting in yer cubicle.

it's a vocal harmony group, they grew up on doo-wop and country and old R&B. The White Stripes didn't have a bass, either.

ominousinc 2009-05-02 06:48:23 PM
I think this band,s PR firm thought they could take the same angle Johnny Cash did in reviving his career and becoming hip with the youngsters. The problem with that formula is that Johnny Cash never lost his cool, he just got dicked over by the new Nashville and sounded like crap when he was trying to "fit in". These guys were part of that new Nashville, and now they are trying to "fit out" because they have passed their expiration date and have been replaced with Keith Urban, and whatever other fagged over crap they call country nowadays. Suck it Cokeridge Boyz.

/You sound worse than William Shatner's album.
//and that is pretty hard to do.
//Willie Nelson is still relevant because he didn't slobber all over new Nashville's republicock.

The bearded guy isn't the guy with the deep voice. It's actually the Trent Reznor wannabe on the right of the album cover.

Ravager 2009-05-02 08:23:06 PM
didn't suck.

THe Oad Ridge one wasn't half bad. But jessu christ the grammy one was incredible. I'd love to see them again sometime. I got to see them at a free concert at Stone Mountain a few years back.

I barely knew who were they were but had a feeling it was a show I'd like to see so I dragged 3 friends and my ex to see it. Great show.

Knobbs 2009-05-02 09:19:33 PM
I've got no hate for the oak Ridge Boys, but that was AWFUL.

Sirsky 2009-05-02 10:17:45 PM
If nothing else, their drummer can hold down a beat. I know that's supposed to be part of the appeal but Meg White is the reason that I can't stand the White Stripes.

Great_Milenko 2009-05-02 10:34:30 PM
this freakin rules. If they do a whole album like this, I'll buy it.

Glad you liked it! And that Grammy performance kicks all sorts of ass. Amazing.

It sounds exactly like the original. I might as well go listen to the original. Nothing new to see here.

truly great cover ...

I'd bang Meg White.
