I think of this in the same light as John Salley saying Kobe Bryant was a better player than Michael Jordan.

on my signal, unleash a hellish fury of fingertapping, arpeggiated fingerpicking, and pickslides bitter, has-been, no-talent, "Im-good-how-come-no-one-likes-my-playing' guitarists who will never have the fame, women, fortune that Eddie had.

While Satriani is better from a technical standpoint, Eddie had the cool rockstar factor and much more soul.

It's the intangible can't-be-learned-or-bought factor.

Some folks got it, some don't. Eddie had it. Joe never did and never will.

There must be some kind of program where you graduate from Van Halen and get rewarded with a better guitar player. Dave got Vai, Sammy gets Satch, Gary Cherone was eventually allowed to go back to Nuno Bettencourt....

Satriani is about as technically perfect as you can get. However, I think his playing lacks a certain bit of "soul", despite what Mr. Haggar says.

Satriani may be able to play music better than Eddie but he can't write music better and in the end that's what matters.

Oddly enough, I think Satriani has "soul". Especially compared to the guitarists he's normally categorized with (Vai, Malmsteen, et al.). He's not the fastest guitarist ever, and while technically great I don't know if he's even the best. But he's got a grasp of the scales like on other. The man can really write a great song.

And for the record, my vote for best guitarist ever is Shawn Lane. Take it for what it's worth.

Lest we forget, 1987 was the year that birthed:

Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien
Van Halend - OU812

Say what you will, the torch had been passed.

Michael Anthony wins.

Coldplay rips off Satriani. Therefore, Satriani is a better guitarist than Eddie. When Coldplay starts ripping off Van Halen, we can have a serious discussion about this.

I'm not as interested in Satriani as I am in Van Halen (and even that's not actually that much), but neither of them bother me. For some reason, Sammy Hagar is conflated with Michael Bolton in my head, and that's not a good thing in my world/worthless opinion.

FTR, "OU812" was domestically released on May 24th, 1988.

At the basics, scales are the essence of a guitar solo.

I clicked and clicked, but nothing happened. I don't get how people in 2009 don't understand how to create an active link on Fark. I presume you linked to Ingwe Malmsteen since you're so obviously out of touch with what's going on in this modern age.

Satriani is someone I would take lessons from. Eddie Van Halen is someone i would watch for enjoyment. Never really appreciated Satriani, though my friends and I would listen to his stuff and imagine how hard it was to play.

Eh, Nigel actually plays the strings with his hair. CC just creates such a huge vortex of suck that his hair is affected by it's wind.

Sonny boy, I was creatin' links on fark before they had them fancy buttons above the dialog box. When I been drinkin, I don't bother.

And I linked to the late great Shawn Lane. Sorry if that's not modern enough for you. I guess the modern equivalent wold be Rusty Cooley.

Eddie is shot.
He is now a pathetic joke.

Alcoholism and Peavey have destroyed his tone.

Once famous for his "brown sound" he is now a complete wreck.
Sad,his imitators sound better than him now.

There are multiple examples of Eddie trainwrecking on tour all over youtube.

Tragic.

van halen sucks. Their music was OK when they had a decent lead singer(no sammy not you). You can go to any bluegrass festival in America and find 20 better guitarist than eddie the ego.

edronny 2009-05-02 09:16:28 AM
Satriani could have been huge had he joined a popular rock band back in the day. Naturally he would never gain the same kind of exposure and popularity as a solo, mostly instrumental artist.

Love Eddie's stuff through fark.
Satch's stuff with Chickenfoot sounds good so far.

Does he still play guitar?

I've seen him launching guitar models and a sneaker line, but I can't recall him playing anything worth a shiat for the last decade or two.

You know, I had similar thoughts.

Satch is an amazing guitarist, but he's never been that much in the mainstream. Too much of his albums are just about him, his guitarwork. Halen, well being a self absorbed prick, he also was more about having a rock band and being well known.

cashier432 2009-05-02 10:44:56 AM
I love both Joe and Eddie...but they're playing is so different it's difficult to compare.

As far as technicality, Roy Buchanan is the master.

WookieBopShuffle 2009-05-02 11:07:25 AM
Satriani, Vai, and Halen would tell you Holdsworth is the master.

Probably most everybody mentioned above would bow towards Holdsworth as having gone beyond mortal technique.

/these conversations are silly.
//guitar - ftw
///Michael Hedges must be mentioned. He is mentioned.

Did any of you ever see Sammy live in the early to mid 70's? He was amazing, & not a slouch guitar player himself. He opened the 2nd Texas Jam for Boston, Van Halen, Heart, Blue Oyster Cult, & Nazareth & blew them all away. I can't wait to hear this new stuff.

quierosteak 2009-05-02 11:36:51 AM
Satch is a great guitarist, but personally and musically he about as interesting as brick. Everything he does feels so artificial and inorganic, like music for a crappy television ad. That's the main reason Satch was never a rock star, he isn't innovative or energetic, he just plays the same stuff that's been around for years and years. Sure he can play better than EVH but EVH changed the face of rock music, which Satch could never do.

d000fus 2009-05-02 12:00:26 PM
David Gilmour sucks.

This thread is now about Pink Floyd.
