Yes, he like W as much as he likes the Unabomber, Hitler and all the others who were "straightforward."

This is particularly true of those who know something about tyranny, and the need to resist it: e.g., the Dalai Lama.

This should be fun.

I also think it's interesting that the Lama is apparently quoted as saying he believes some humans are inherently evil -- like followers of a militant/fundamenatlist version of Islam.

The Dalai Lama is no Buddist.

Comedy gold, Jerry. Comedy gold.

Yup, all my conservative Buddhist friends are always telling me how much they admire the Dalai Lama.

Dubya may have been a nice guy, which appears to be the measure by which the Dalai Lama was judging him by, but I disagree that being a nice guy makes you a good leader.

Also the Dalai Lama never made a public statement in support of the War on Terror, his opinions have been more nuanced and desirous of conciliation to mitigate the hatred that terrorist leaders use to recruit.

Why do people listen to the Dalai Lama anyway? He's the representative of a violent theocratic regime that made Tibet a feudal serfdom. Tibet is better off as part of China.

The Dalai Lama really said that?

Wow.... That's just mind blowing.

Of course, it is a pretty stark reminder that my extreme bitterness WRT the former president is... simply not healthy for me. No matter how richly he earned it, my resentment is only harmful.

Apparently not content with being a professional shill for Microsoft 7of7 now has the PRC account as well. Anytime you hear the words "Feudal" or "brutal theocracy" used to describe Tibet you know you are reading official Chinese propaganda. They've given up the patently ridiculous Bullshiat about how Tibet was always part of China (just like Taiwan, eh fellas?) and have moved on to the assertion that they were somehow doing the Tibetans a favor by "liberating" them from an evil backwards theocracy. (which explains while the Tibetan people reacted to this generous liberation by more or less engaging in massive resistance for the past 50-odd years

I say hey, lama, how about a lil something for the effort, you know. So he says, there won't be any money but when you die on your deathbed you'll achieve total consciousness. So I got that going for me.

Well I do have one of Bush's quotes on my website.

"The war against this enemy is more than a military conflict. It is the decisive ideological struggle of the 21st century and the calling of our generation"

Where has Bush been lately by the way? After all he did start the Ideological Struggle of the 21st century, you know the Children's Children's war?

quizzical 2009-05-01 08:32:14 PM
TFA: "I love him", said the Dalai Lama of President Bush, "but as far as his policies are concerned, I have reservations."

And this is why the Dali Lama is a much better person then I will ever be. I respect Bush's basic human rights. I might even let him in the house if he had a flat tire, and needed a place to sit and wait for the tow truck. But that's about as far as it goes.

Actually he referred to Bush as "honest and straightforward". But then, when have Democrats shown that they value honesty?

Saddam Hussein, that's who.

Bush was probably an honest, straightforward, good guy. Too bad he didn't run the Bush Administration.

Shaggy_C 2009-05-01 08:37:50 PM
Bush did plenty of positive things. He won two wars, gave democracy to Iraq and Afghanistan, increased aid to Africa, his tax cuts helped us to recover from the Clinton recession, and Israel has never been a closer ally. Not to mention he protected us from the terrorists for his entire rest of his term after 9/11. He was a leader we should look up to.

Fart_Machine 2009-05-01 08:40:08 PM
The Dalai Lama is part of a religion that believes every sentient creature has good in them no matter how low. This is a man who holds no ill will against China for farking sake.

WHERE IS YOUR HUNTINGTON NOW???

ok, onto the real subject...
I wouldn't be surprised if this comment was slightly politically motivated. For the last few decades or so, he's been trying to get the Chinese government to see things his way and by meeting them halfway. Beijing has always preferred Bush and republicans in general to democrats, and perhaps this is the Dalai Lama's way of saying that they've got things in common.

/far fetched
//speculation
///both the old-school Tibetan theocracy and the current government are bad.

The Dalai Lama loves the inherant goodness inside each and every living thing.

When the Dalai Lama says that he loves Bush, he's simply acknowledging that Bush is, in fact, a living thing...

...and then he mentions the fact that he disagrees with Bush on matters of policy.

That's exactly what I'd expect the Dalai Lama to say.
