He was handcuffed and taken to the school's administrative office, where he was held, said Dan Recht, a Denver lawyer who took the case on behalf of the American Civil Liberties Union which represented Benson.

Damn those ACLU commies, always persecuting conservatives...

/wait, what?

Conservatives love the ACLU. They can yell and scream about them being enemies of the country, but they'll still back them up when needed.

Wait, why was this kid arrested and taken to the principal's office?

I mean, is there a legitimate reason for it or is it just one side over reacting about the other side?

Good, because that charge was complete BS.

The freedom to say "My president is an asshole" is one I cherish greatly, even when I disagree with the person saying it.

while it had the right conclusion, it flabberbaffles me that any person could think a charge in this circumstance is a good idea, much less an active law enforcement agent.

some actions run so contrary to the trust placed in an individual that a single piece of stupid this large should end (or at the very least, greatly alter) their career.

Yes, and then he was released and the charges dropped.

Why? Because it was the sensible thing to do.

And because it was sensible, you and your ilk will refuse to acknowledge the fact that it ever happened and continue to act as though the child were being held as a political prisoner even as we speak.

Maybe if we stated torturing him, you'd suddenly be all for it.

Any insights for me?

Well arrested is something of an exaggeration, he was handcuffed and taken to the principal's office where he was uncuffed and given a ticket to appear in court for interfering with the staff of an educational facility.

What about the time I had a dispute over my cable bill ? I had to talk to the cable company and the ACLU never even tried to help me out.

brigid_fitch [TotalFark] 2009-05-01 05:26:01 PM
FTFA: Benson was given a "promise to appear" citation by a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy and accused of "interference with staff of an educational facility,"

Wearing a tshirt & carrying a sign is "interference"?? There damn well had better be MUCH more to that story to justify an arrest & criminal charges. Like the kid hitting a teacher w/the sign.

Good thing charges were dropped. And I hope his parents sue the hell out of the school & sheriff's office.

dhudd 2009-05-01 05:26:56 PM
Hard core dem here, the deputy needs to be tarred and feathered. The kid needs a brain transplant.

I bought a candy bar the other day and it didn't taste as good as thought it would. So far the ACLU hasn't even made an attempt to contact me regarding the issue.

I guess only one organization at a time can support a right. Wow never knew about that one.

I guess that someone needs to tell the National Coalition Against Censorship to stfu since the ACLU has free speech already covered.

No joke, at the very least the arresting office needs to be fired.

Wasn't the Jefferson County sheriff's the same one that suppressed quite a lot of embarrassing (for them) documents about the Columbine shootings for several years?

What an odd piece of false conclusion drawing.

Because the ACLU has made a decision to focus on an area of the bill or rights that is not covered by the immenseley well funded NRA you are all upset. Why exactly?

brainiac-dumdum [TotalFark] 2009-05-01 05:32:42 PM

The story is light on details but students have limited speech on school grounds and at school functions. The deputy was a tool for charging him but the article says nothing regarding where the student was, how he was campaigning, and if his actions exceeded the limited free speech that high school students enjoy while on campus.

Just to be sure everyone is consistent on the student free speech thing, think about what your position was on the kid with the "Bong Hits for Jesus" sign.

Look this is turning into a run away train.

I have no problem with the ACLU I simply disagree with the way they view the 2nd amendment. I have a lot respect for the work they do.

Random Guy: I guess only one organization at a time can support a right.

Perhaps they looked at their limited resources and decided what their priorities as an organization should be.

Do you think the NRA is not up to the task? Do you think the NRA should start expanding their defense of the Bill of Rights to be more encompassing?
