I went to Fiji in January of 2001 and they had a bit of unrest going then too. It was weird entering the airport with no issues while you had armed military posted at all entrances. Guess they didn't have any beefs with Americans and Australians at the time.

Last time I was there, I was pleasantly surprised by how nice everyone was to each other and how great the Indian food was. It's pretty sad that everyone is actually dirt poor, pissed-off and hates Indian food.

Apparently there's a fair amount of hostility between the native Fijians and later immigrants. Which is believable. I mean, would you want tons of people coming and living on your island paradise?
