Hey, I'm pretty gay for Coldplay, but not $97.50 plus $20 facilities charge and $8 convenience charge gay. WTF? You are not the Rolling Stones. Nashville show, fwiw.

/saw them 5 years ago in 2,000-seat theatre for $40

It's Free!!!!

Like they have a choice. It's going to be free 15 seconds after it's available to anyone.

You couldn't pay me enough to take it. Well, maybe you could pay me.

But you couldn't make me listen.

Uhhhh...well, judging by the sales of their past few albums, I'm pretty sure people would still buy it, but hey, free is free.

Just for being good sports, I'm giving them a dollar. I'm damn sure not listening to the album, but good behavior should be rewarded.

So. A much better band is giving away a free song today to support the Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives.

shame its a live album, they absolutely suck live.

catchy studio tunes though.

lead singer needs to stop doing lines or drinking 5 redbulls before a show

LoveRBS 2009-05-01 12:35:50 PM
Eh kinna dumb move from a kinna political standpoint.

If they sold it like a regular album, probably less than normal would be bought anyway, but at least their record company and all the intermediates would see some money from it. Coulda helped.

Good move from a touring standpoint tho. The fans that would eat this album up are definately going to go to the concert, so why not continue their interest in the band with some good filler material like a live album.

You're doing it wrong.

NikolaiFarkoff [TotalFark] 2009-05-01 01:00:22 PM
But seriously, at $125 a ticket, they oughta be giving me a $50 bill inside the CD, too. That is the highest price I've seen for a mainstream, current act. Ever.

Holy fark. I work my ass off to make money playing music. Is your time, gear, and education not an investment? Don't you think that you should be rewarded for that? Or let's look at it another way: someone is making money off your music, shouldn't you get a cut?

No, no, I know... let's all work for free - I've heard this all before. I'm beginning to think that the people who say musicians shouldn't make money are either jealous outsiders or really shiatty musicians that want to bring us down to their level.

Coldplay is doing a disservice to musicians by perpetuating the meme. What's worse is they've made theirs and will continue to do so, regardless of the stunt. Instead, this becomes a story of pissing in the eyes of people trying to make a living being a musician.

This negative trend in music-making income is gotdamn ridiculous.

Every Coldplay fan should own this concert DVD:

Every song is performed perfectly. And as you can see it's from back in the day when their songs were a lot better. I've gotten stoned and listened to this dozens of times, it's epic!

Yeah, I realized that after I posted it. You're right. Feckless nihilism is never the answer.

So I tried to redeem myself with a passable Animal House reference. But the drunk/stoned guy didn't get it. So now I'm just leaving the thread.

Charlie Freak - I was a pro musician for some time a fair while ago.

I got a job when I realised that I could not be financially reliable with that alone - too up and down.

Over time I have still recorded and spent tons of time and money on my music - I'm one of those "gotta be perfect" recording guys (I used to be a recording engineer waaaaaaaay back).

I still do it all because of the sheer pleasure I get out of writing and recording and also have people tell me what they get out of it.

I *dont'* really think anyone owes me anything - it's still something that is simply a "professional level hobby".

I make money out of music, but I also work a normal job 5 days a week. I can do both, but I am not lazy. (Not saying you are either).

Times have changed, and I think today's attitude is more realistic. Just my opinion.

Andric 2009-05-01 08:26:58 PM
I like Coldplay, too.

Also, I take this as retroactive permission for my already downloading their other albums for free.

You and me both. I also have to work 5 days a week because there just isn't any money to be made. But that's kind of my point, there is a lot less money to be made because this generation is okay with not paying for stuff - even to the point of being repulsed if they're asked or expected to pay for something from which they derive enjoyment. What's the old saying? Nothing in life is free.

I think we're talking apples and oranges, though vis-a-vis the live vs recording aspect. If you had said recording is your hobby, then I'd have probably not have reacted so. Though I still say the entire musical world is being diluted and deflated, which is not a good thing; that's the topic of another thread, I'm afraid.

My problem lies more within the live music realm and the people who take advantage of the people who couldn't care to be compensated. A pro-level band like Coldplay giving away a pro-level recording (albeit of a live show) isn't helping anyone's situation, except for the listener, who already gets everything for free.

I think what you'll see in the next 20 years is a complete drying up of musical talent. Sure, it's still okay now because of the residual talent that's been worked for and earned. But if there's no money to be made, no future in the business, then people will stop buying good gear, stop getting educated, etc. and we'll see a dropoff in the music (I already think we have). It's a negative trend that needs to end.

Not "free" as in speech but "free" as in crap.

I really like their "parachutes" album... pretty damn great for a debut...
and I also quite like "viva...".
X and Y had a few good songs, but mostly slow dirge-y crap.
"a rush of blood to the head" wasn't as good as i thought it would be. besides the hit singles from it, it was pretty bland. come to think of it, the hit singles from "rush of...." were pretty bland too. [or maybe just super overplayed].

did they release that 2002-ish live dvd as just a cd-only release too? i knew they came together in one package though...

probably better to get both anyway...

bub2000 2009-05-02 08:21:24 AM
They also recorded a show in Toronto that's been released only as an HDNet concert, as far as I know...

Good musicians don't care about how much money they make.

Gonna call bullshiat on that one - something has to pay the bills.

People on the outside, hobbyists, and kids all think this is the case because they're not the ones trying to make a living. Good musicians are often a product of their dedication, not simply their talent. I would be a much better musician if it was my full-time job - you know, practicing and writing 8-12 hours a day, going on tour to support the product, etc. Making money off your music is the only way to support that much dedication. If you dedicate less than that, for whatever reason, then there's a good chance you're not a good musician, or at least you're not maximizing your potential.

If you're positing that good musicians don't have to care about how much money they make, then I might agree - if it were twenty years ago. It's hardly the case these days.
