Actually, it's a liberal that's retiring. So no change, really.

Dammit, do the mods greenlight the one that has fewer comments intentionally so that we get to have the same six discussions over and over and over and over and over and...

Sixty Dems. Constitutional scholar appointing a justice. I can sleep well tomorrow.

I think we need to disband the Supreme Court.

In these times of economic upheaval, it's irresponsible to continue paying extra for tomatoes and sour cream.

SCOTUS has a schedule. They hear cases for X amount of time, then adjourn for X amount of time. Souter's saying that when this current session is up, he's gone.

SubBass49 2009-04-30 11:29:27 PM
Wasn't Souter appointed by Dubya's dad though?

/confused that he would have picked a liberal.

Action Replay Nick [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-04-30 11:29:50 PM
It doesn't matter who he appoints. He's not even a citizen and all of the things he's doing will be invalidated and undone in 2010 when the Republicans take control back.

borg [TotalFark] 2009-04-30 11:29:56 PM
Supreme Court Justice Hillary Clinton

JammerJim 2009-04-30 11:30:08 PM
Its unlikely Obama will get to truly change the makeup of the court, even if he gets another term. Souter is fairly liberal, and the next justices likely to die or retire are Ginsberg and Stevens, also liberals.

Scalia is like one of those fat old bastards you see if you go to the smaller towns in Sicily, runs the entire town, an affable, superintelligent son of a biatch that will live forever.

I think that man eats butter for breakfast but he'll live to be a hundred.

Anyway... NOT SOUTER!

The court has a Calendar that runs from the first Monday in October until sometime in June, when they take a break. Those periods of time are called terms.

I didn't there were people that didn't know that.

JammerJim: Its unlikely Obama will get to truly change the makeup of the court, even if he gets another term. Souter is fairly liberal, and the next justices likely to die or retire are Ginsberg and Stevens, also liberals.

Well, you could argue that the "liberal" portion of the Court currently isn't particularly liberal in the grand scheme of things. It's possible a more leftist voice could be added with enough chutzpah (sp?) to push everything back towards (IMO) the political center.

Yeah. But a Dem Congress also gave Bush his choice of Clarence Farking Thomas.
