in other news, the male population in Lilith Fair increase 3-fold with addition of The Cowboy Junkies.

I've never been to Lilith Fair, but I wound up at a Indigo Girls show at another festival about 10 years ago and some hippie girl pissed on my shoe.

Ugh. I understand that homosexuality is becoming more and more prevalent, but "shows" like these really feel like they're trying to throw it in our faces...

I like to have sex with women.

Dirty, filthy, naughty, hip-grinding sex.

BOOGEDY, BOOGEDY, BOOGEDY!

Oh, you joke, but:
[At a Neko Case show] in San Francisco several years back, one dude just chucked all caution/sense/decorum to the wind and requested she take off her shirt; Neko responded with the unfazed, elegant, bemused demeanor of someone accustomed to dealing with this sort of thing, something to the effect of, "No, no, you wouldn't actually like that-it'd be like pulling up an old piece of plywood that's been stuck in your front yard for years." That (briefly) shut 'em up.

I think it's safe to say that the people attending these shows are rational and non-bigoted enough to not be offended by same-sex love.

Have you called the police to report the person who is holding the gun to your head and forcing you to attend a Lilith Fair concert?

Here's another helpful hint, courtesy of a buddy of mine who went to a LF show. When you walk into the men's room, don't be surprised to find it full of women who have no problem with peeing in the toilets, urinals and sinks, with all their sinful body parts exposed.

Here's what the lineup should have:

Joanna Newsom
The Distillers
Rasputina
Fever Ray
Dresden Dolls
Neko Case
Kate Bush (somebody would have to drive a dump truck full of cash up to her house, but they'd sell some damn tickets)

SurfaceTension [TotalFark] 2009-04-30 12:22:34 PM
Were I unattached you could count on me heading to one of these concerts. Figure 5 guys vs. 15,000 or more ladies in their late teens to early 30's feeling all open and free; they can't ALL be lesbians now, can they?

I was at the 9:30 Club in DC a few years ago when Liz Phair performed there. This was before she remade herself as a dancey pop princess. She performed her song "Flower" (which, for you non-fans, is not about a flower), and the whole time she was singing she just stood there at the edge of the stage, both of her tiny hands curled around the microphone like it was something precious, something she wanted nothing more than to hold and caress and make part of herself and lose herself into. At times, her painted lips brushed the microphone, pressed open and closed and then were moistened by a quick pass of her soft and supple tongue. She sang barely over a whisper, her voice throaty and deep. When she finally finished, there was at least 20 seconds of sustained, stunned silence in the room. It was really quite remarkable.

If you ever can find the original "Girly Songs" demo of "Flower", the words are slightly different from the version that ended up on the album.

The demo has the line "I'll f**k you and your girlfriend, too" which was changed on the album to something else.

Liz still looks hot, BTW! Link NSFW (new window)

I laugh at your joke.

Then I say that yelling that or anything about playing Skynyrd is never 1/10th as funny as you think it is. Maybe at a board meeting, okay, but at a concert, it is officially played. Especially the Skynyrd ones.

Uzzah 2009-04-30 02:13:06 PM
Hell, I'd definitely go see a festival with this kind of lineup.

Suzanne Vega - never seen her perform, would like to.
Natalie Merchant - saw her both back in the early "I'm shy, can't face the audience" days as well more recently. I don't think she's put out new music in a while, but I'd still go see her play.
Indigo Girls - seen multiple times (hippy ex-wife...). I find a lot of their stuff repetitive, but they seem to enjoy playing live and that makes it at least tolerable.
Sinead O'Connor - never saw. I'd be surprised if she's really willing to play big shows at this point. Not necessarily a fan, but I'd go out of curiousity.
Liz Phair - would absolutely want to see
McLachlan - her stuff is repetitive, too, but I'd give her a couple of songs to impress me
Missy Eliot - not my thing
Bonnie Rait - seen her a couple of times. Plays with energy, but spends too much time on weaker recent material. Worth maybe 20 minutes of attention.
Erykah "On and On" Badu - a little too loopy for my tastes, but I'd give her a chance to see how she plays.
Lisa "You Say I Only Hear What I Want To" Loeb - unless she's gone in some new direction, I think the "folksy girl songwriter accompanying herself on rhytym guitar" genre is pretty played out. If she's got something more than that up her sleeve, I'd give her a chance.
Paula "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" Cole - seen her. Not great, but not bad.
Meredith "biatch" Brooks - I'd give her a couple of songs to convince me she's not a one-hit wonder. Then come back for the hit single at the end of the set to see if even *she's* tired of it.
Meshell Ndegeocello - would definitely be interested in seeing
The Cowboy Junkies - seen several times. Not thrilled with the music, but they put on an engaging show.

When given the choice (Mass Effect, Deus Ex 2, Fallout 3, etc) I play my video games as a female character so I can admire my ass. I bet I could use that line to pick up chicks at Lilith Fair.

IdahoPrime: Do want (to hear her voice)

I actually got to hug Sarah McLachlan once when she played in support of her second album (which hadn't yet "exploded") and I helped out as a roadie. Played hacky-sack with her too...but not "jump in the sack" - which would have been a better game.

I love the Indigo Girls (Nomads, Indians, and Saints is one of my fave albums), and saw them play live once, but I have to say being in a room with a TON of lesbians is uncomfortable. They gave me that snarky look like "What the fark are YOU doing here!? This is OURS!". Almost like I was a white guy performing comedy at the Apollo....

There's a "Womyn's Music Festival" in northern lower Michigan every year. I read an article about it once and it said there were signs posted on the way in that said "No Men Allowed!"

For some reason, I didn't feel the need to challenge the signs. You probably could have cut the estrogen with a knife.

There's a band around here by the name "Tongue and Groove," and yes they're lesbians. Cool chicks, though. I like 'em.

Good thing you didn't make a tuna fish joke.

Gotta say, though, if they could talk Mazzy Star into coming back and touring, I'd risk the Birkenstocks and sleeveless flannel shirts and buy a ticket.

Mazzy Star? I LOVED her SO much when they came out. The breathy voice, The Jesus and the Mary Chain duet....
