I would further posit that this is caused by the majority of right wingers having forgotten why they believe in things like low taxes and small government. They just know that they believe it, and their forbears believed it, so it must be right. Therefore, any rebuttal of these beliefs by things like facts and logic places them in the uncomfortable position of having to defend something they don't understand. Ergo whargrrbl.

A lot of people in that district are fundamentalists christians or farmers - or both - and do not take well to change. It's a soul-draining existence out there. I finally moved away from there a month ago and I feel like I got five years of my life back.

My husband and I were just talking about this last night with regard to her comments about the last swine flu outbreak having occurred during a Democratic administration. It would be one thing (a kooky thing, to be sure) to opine that a flu outbreak occurring while the opposition is in the White House is somehow a sinister, less-than-chance happening, but at least you can argue about that. When she's just plain wrong on the facts you'd think "you're wrong" would shut her up but I guess not. It's not a very satisfying argument (some might say it's just being contrary).

Exactly why I'm facepalming. Most morons off the street would perform better than Bachmann with her resources, which along with all the stuff above, I presume includes access to non-published Congressional researchers and reports, clips of all news items she could ever read, being able to expense any relevant books or publications she cares to order, and, really, being able to draw on the expertise of the best-educated people in America, because she is a lawmaker, and most professors or industry leaders or bureaucrats would happily meet with her and brief her on any issue of import... I am confident that half of the Fark politics tab would perform better than Bachmann without the resources she has, and just with Wikipedia.
