Terrifying for whom, exactly?

The "Obama Doctrine"?

In what respect?

damageddude [TotalFark] 2009-04-29 03:43:54 PM
Heaven forbid we talk to our enemies to see if we can work something out before we nuke them form orbit. And a pox on us all if we give a little tough love to our friends and tell them to knock it off a bit because they're acting like a tard.

The combination of dizzying naivete, dislike of our allies, disdain for our military, distrust of our intelligence services and distaste for our own country promises the worst foreign policy of our lifetimes.

I used to take drugs, too.

Problems can be negotiated away. From Somali pirates to Moscow's belligerency, Obama and his Cabinet see a good chat as the best response to a challenge. Our president got to the Oval Office by talking, not doing, and his faith in his powers of persuasion is unlimited.

Obama sent Navy SEALS in to "chat" with Somali pirates. What he didn't do was swagger around his living room acting like a macho asshole with a stupid factory-fresh cowboy hat on and a "what's going on here" look smacked all over his chevy chase.

Well... no word yet on if it's going to be worse than Carter, it's only been 100 days so let's give him a chance.

It is, however, looking pretty bad so far.

Yeah. Because diplomacy and dialogue-opening are WAY worse courses of action than the asshole cowboy isolationism that's worked so well for us the last eight years. God forbid we talk to other countries in an attempt to foster a better relationship with them rather than just bomb the living $#!+ out of them if they don't agree with us and/or are full of brown people.

Why beat around the bush? Everything comes down to what is best for Isreal with you. I see no reason to go round and round when the end result is always the same.

Don't you know? You can't be taken seriously if you aren't up there waving around your giant thermonuclear man-meat and stomping on enough brown people to make Hitler envious.

It seems like the author is implying the divorcing of the term "terrorism" from any connotations with fundamental Islamist ideology. I am just wondering whether or not that is true.

Oh, and by the by - Carter's foreign policy was far from the worst evar. Last time I checked, he was instrumental in brokering a peace accord between Egypt and Israel (still the ONLY official peace between a Muslim mid-east country and the Jewish state) that's still being honored three decades later.

So, bag on the guy all you want, but that's more international bridge-building than Bush ever did.

Hence my asking. I figure if they sent out a directive on this (i.e. don't use this term anymore), we would have heard about it just like we heard about Overseas Contingency Operations.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they used that report that called things "man-made disasters" or whatever the f*ck it was and extrapolated to a far more interesting assumption.

Of course, that line you quoted is repeated exactly in a russian news article, so maybe the Russians got a jump on the news story ahead of every english speaking news agency except for the Post.

I have no idea, because unlike the NYPost, I'm not hung up on semantics. Whenever the government "officially" changes the name of something it annoys me because it makes me wonder how much it cost me for 6 bureaucrats to sit in a room and come up with that.

It's not a bad idea. Trying to simplify the actions of extremist sects found in a population of over a billion into a single lumped group is lazy and stupid

I think it's refreshing to have an american president actually acknowledge that the us, the 5000 pound gorilla on the block has actually made mistakes that have consequences, unlike... most other presidents.

No, I understand that. Death tax vrs. Estate tax is a perfect example. But it still annoys me when the gov comes out with these "official" language changes. I have to deal with them at work, and it annoys the fark out of me when I need to recode 50 different web pages because the ED decided to change one word on a Loan name.
