I actually like most of their mellower stuff over most of the hard stuff (from Facelift and Dirt). SAP and Jar of Flies were both pretty awesome from start to finish. I didn't get into the self-titled '95 album very much.

Cantrell's 1st solo album BOGGY DEPOT is a really great, overlooked effort. Check it out.

'Heap' is a good word to use, calls to mind refuse, dung, words synonymous with the general state of hard rock today.

I Said [TotalFark] 2009-04-29 11:00:39 AM
I'm a big Alice in Chains fan. I also like Jerry's solo stuff as rocinante721 mentioned.

But AiC without Staley really isn't AiC at all. His voice was extremely distinct.

FeedTheCollapse 2009-04-29 11:12:52 AM
eh, i'll give the album a spin. I throw in Dirt and jar of Flies every now and then, but AIC is not something I listen to a lot now. I blame Godsmack.

The AIC song, or the AIC cover band?

I think a good cover band name would be Chalice in Aims.

I saw them twice with DuVall, they sounded really good.

I'm looking forward to hearing the new music.

No Layne Stanley = no Alice in Chains

I also love how when Freddie Mercury died the remaining members of Queen said Queen was over and would never tour again. Then they went and toured with a new lead singer.

the latter.

Though speaking of which, and I know I'll get shiat for this, I think Dirt would be a better album if they deleted all the tracks between the title track and Would?

Shaggy_C: Didn't that dude die? This isn't going to be their "Back in Black".

While few bands will ever achieve a "Back in Black" situation, this has roughly the same set-up as AC/DC's. Bon Scott killed himself with his particular poison, and everyone thought that his voice was irreplaceable. Layne killed himself with his particular poison, and everyone thinks that his voice is irreplaceable. The singer wasn't the songwriter in either case, as Jerry Cantrell writes everything and I'm fairly certain that the Youngs write everything for AC/DC.

It could happen. I'm not saying it will.

And for the record: if they can just come up with one song as good as "Over Now" I'll be stoked.

Can't say I disagree with that completely. But "Rain When I Die " and "Down in a Hole" are good songs, and "Angry Chair" is one of their best songs ever. IMHO.

Down in a hole is my favorite AiC song. Don't care for Angry Chair, but I do like When I Die.

stappawho 2009-04-29 11:59:06 AM
Saw Jerry do his solo stuff right after Layne died. He did some AiC songs with DuVall singing (I think he was just a guitarist for Jerry's solo band at the time). He pretty much sucked. The entire show was cool because of the tribute feel it had. The Wilsons showed up for a few songs also.

I have heard some of the live stuff more recently with DuVall since he officially took over and some of it sounds more promising. I still don't like what I hear from songs like Junkhead or Down in a Hole because it just doesn't sound right. He is obviously no Layne.

I'm looking forward to the new album and hope to see them live. Never did get to see them with Layne. Had tickets to a show in 95 when they were opening for Metallica but they dropped out before the Seattle date. That was pretty much the end of them right there. I think they played a few shows after that. Guess I was born a little too late.

I think he meant between Dirt and Would. Anyways, I disagree. Hate to Feel and God Smack are both great songs.

AiC still gets heavy rotation on my stereo. Although there's no way you can call them Alice In Chains without Staley's distinct voice, I will still give this new album a listen. Call me curious.

Now, will I see them live, listen to the new guy cover the old songs? Nope. I'd rather keep the memories from seeing them at Lollapalooza '93.

Never cared for this song. I'm also not entirely sure if I've ever listened to the track all the way through for as long as I've owned that album. Hate To Feel is Meh. Godsmack is good, but b-side material. Why Iron Gland (the untitled track) exists is beyond me.

Cut those tracks and you have a great 9-track album.

You're right, I thought he meant between the intro track and closing track, leaving you with two songs (which are probably the two best songs, or at least best-known songs, on the album)

All true. Execpt, Cantrells solo material didn't really go anywhere. Shame he needs that AIC moniker, but the new album is
gonna kick ass. Also, if you search AIC in the studio on youtube their is a series of vids of them recording this new album. The guitar riffs are awesome. First album I've been really excited about in about 10 years.

The singer died...Not the person who writes pretty much all their material.

In AC/DC's case, didn't the dead guy do a lot or most of the writing too?

A slight tangent to this point: on the original pressing of the album, "Down in a Hole" was next to last, before "Would?". It was perfect there - the movement from "Angry Chair" to "Down in a Hole" is one of my favorites on any album, and closed the album perfectly.

I don't know why they moved "Down in a Hole", but I assume "Would?" was not originally intended for the album, and "Down in a Hole" was supposed to close the album. On that original pressing, "Would?" actually feels more like an afterthought.

Seriously - move "Down in a Hole" to the last track, push "Would?" to the Singles soundtrack, and see for yourself. It improves the balance of the album dramatically.

msw-mojo 2009-04-29 02:53:03 PM
Now that it's been 15 - 20 years one can look at the "Seattle" sound with some clarity. AIC to me is still clearly the most innovative and relevant. Nirvana did a good job of writing catchy pop/rock/punk songs based on others. Soundgarden really good, and not just Cornell. Temple of the Dog was great. I'm forgetting the name of the Eddie Vedder thing, one good album, then swill.

AIC clear winner.

lurkster [TotalFark] 2009-04-29 03:18:07 PM
They should pick up Weiland as a singer. STP's first album was a blatant rip from most of the Seattle stuff anyway. And there's a YouTube clip of Weiland doing something with them (Angry Chair, I believe it is) that sounds pretty damn good.

/can't wait for the new album

Funny, now that you mention it, I always felt like Would was a "bonus track" on Dirt. Almost feels like they crammed it on there because of the commercial success of Singles (which I also own, of course).

Ugh. Apart from when Cantrell says, "that's farked up," that song has no redeeming value. It's amusing that they've got a country beat to it, but that's probably why I hate it so much.

uglyredhonda: On that original pressing, "Would?" actually feels more like an afterthought.

Would? always did feel like a bit of a good that kind of stood out. But it's a damn good song, so it can stay. But I would cut Godsmack through Angry Chair just because they weigh the album down a bit. Godsmack has a good chorus (for lack of a better word), but never cared much for Layne's vocals during the verses. Iron Gland is pointless. Hate to Feel is okay, but definite filler. Never saw the appeal of Angry Chair.

Of those 4 tracks, I would probably keep Angry Chair if only because the transition from Dirt to Would? would seem awkward.

While not country-like, i always thought "Don't Follow" had kind of a bluesy feel to the bit toward the end...
