Sheesh. Were Marcy Playground and Chumbawamba busy?

JerseyTim: Were Marcy Playground and Chumbawamba busy?

No, just smelling sex and candy and tubthumping.

JerseyTim: Sheesh. Were Marcy Playground and Chumbawamba busy?

They're busy Flagpole Sittin with Harvey Danger

Gangway Fathead 2009-04-28 10:07:43 PM
Hey, Chumbawamba was a GREAT band before Tubthumping.

Never before have I gone from love to hate on a band so quickly. It was like Never Mind the Ballots had never existed!

Subby, you say that like it's a bad thing.

Amen, brother. '97 was a pretty good year for music.

With the exception of DMB I would and have gladly paid to see those bands.

It was the last year before the rise of Limp Bizkit. Soon after the suffering began.

Are you saying we didn't suffer during the 1996 "Let's play every farking Alanis Morisette song" trial? She had 3 songs in the top 10 (1,2,5) of the Billboard 100 in addition to 2 by Madonna, a Celine Dion song and that awful Donna Lewis song.

tsferg 2009-04-28 11:13:27 PM
Oh man, you couldnt pay me to watch those headliners. Could 1997 have been the worst year in music history?

Fine Young Cannibals and Jesus Jones respectfully beg to differ.

At first i was excited until i saw DMB. That means DMB fans. No thanks.

QU!RK1019 2009-04-28 11:26:04 PM
The Toadies? Welcome to '97 indeed. They just performed here in Salt Lake a week ago, but I didn't catch them (I was at the Franz Ferdinand concert, actually). Are they making a comeback?

bugenhagen [TotalFark] 2009-04-28 11:26:09 PM
Subby, did you even read the list beyond the first 5 bands?

/surprised Wilco didn't make it this year :(

Mr. Mcpoops 2009-04-28 11:35:47 PM
Flogging Molly was great the last time I saw them.

Uzzah 2009-04-28 11:52:34 PM
zunkus: With the exception of DMB I would and have gladly paid to see those bands.

I'd go see the 1997 version of DMB. That was before the popped-collar douchebag brigade sniffed them out. "Under the Table and Dreaming" and "Crash" were solid albums. Then everything went to shiat.

Stray Slacker 2009-04-29 12:06:26 AM
Damn, I've been looking forward to this lineup and I gotta say I think overall it's pretty weak.

Those bands couldn't touch Chumba before they sold out!

DoblerMeyer [TotalFark] 2009-04-29 01:00:57 AM
The rest of the lineup is pretty solid too. The second I saw The Toadies were playing, I made up my mind to make the short trip to Austin. Along with the bands that subby mentioned, I'm also looking forward to finally seeing Daniel Johnston live, mainly out of morbid curiosity. Just checked the list again, and I noticed Mos Def and Flogging Molly. That should turn out to be a pretty great weekend.

So farking true... I can not stand them now. I would love to see the Beasties and Ben Harper. Especially Ben Harper. Brilliant songwriter

Headliners, meh.

The bands that make it worth it: Bon Iver, Toadies, Girl Talk, !!!, Dovtchka, Dr. Dog, The Dodos

Looking forward to finding new ones.

I will be nailed for this hard, but I REALLY want to see Pearl Jam.
Any Austinites that can hook me up for cheap?

I dunno, I can put up with whiny girls a lot easier than a bunch of bros all aggro'd out, ruining both rock and rap in the process.

lilplatinum [TotalFark] 2009-04-29 03:30:06 AM
Remember when ACL used to have relevant headliners?

This years lineup blows, figures I would get free VIP tickets to one to where i want to see a handfull of bands.

southaustin [TotalFark] 2009-04-29 03:41:41 AM
lilplatinum: Remember when ACL used to have relevant headliners?

No. Austinites steer clear of this festival as well as SXSW -- we wait 'til all you headliner-seeking nutjobs have pumped up our economy, and when you leave we go back to having our choice of any of about 200 live performances of relative unknowns and regionally popular musicians.

/south austin ftw

southaustin [TotalFark] 2009-04-29 03:44:37 AM
Er, that is, our choice of any of 200 performances per night. For cheap or free.

Ahh yes, I remember sleeping through their set at Ozzfest in '98.

/as I drifted off, a friend of mine asked no one in particular "how'd they get all this suck in one band?"

Meh on regional musicians, previous years at least had some of the bigger indie bands go there. And plenty of Austinites go to ACL and many many more go to SXSW. South Austinites are not the only people who live in the city.

Allansfirebird 2009-04-29 06:00:23 AM
I'd go see DMB (and endure the fans) only if Warren Haynes or Carlos Santana were guesting that evening. Otherwise, I'll just sit and listen from home, thanks.

CarnySaur 2009-04-29 07:58:29 AM
The Beastie Boys are still very good live.

Gangway Fathead: Those bands couldn't touch Chumba before they sold out!

I can't speak on Chumbawumba's albums, because I never listened to them, but both FYC and Jesus Jones were pretty big, before they had that one song that destroyed them each in their own way.

Jesus Jones kicked ass, although they were just sort of ripping off the Shamen, before they became a bit too goofy.

/Seeing Beasties play in SF soon

I still watch the recording I have of Eric Johnson at ACL. I think I recorded it in 93, yes recorded it on VHS not DVR and yes I still use my VCR from time to time.

/My lawn looks great after keeping all of you off it!

Pearl Jam puts on one of the greatest rock shows today. I'm just bummed I didn't get into them until 2005!

They have a new album either out or coming, and it is absolutely no surprise that they'd be at this festival. Texas loves the Toadies, and rightly so.

Heck yeah. They released a new CD last year and have been touring to support it. We caught them here in Houston back in December, and they're hitting the festival circuit this summer.

Come to Toronto, where CFNY FM plays Pearl Jam every hour. Along with The Tragically Hip and Our Lady Peace.

It's 1997 every day here!

/stopped listening to that crapfest ages ago
//someone turned it on in the office and it was the same old tired shiat
///it makes me get stabby and killy

Every time the Mayor farts, they hold another music festival.

plenty of Austinites go to ACL and many many more go to SXSW. South Austinites are not the only people who live in the city.

Just because they abandoned their weak home states to come for the jobs here doesn't make them Austinites.

and again...S A - F T W !!

And wearing keep austin wierd shiat and living in dumps south of doesn't make you the only people who can claim residence in the city.

But my south austinite friends do grow pretty good dope in their dumps, so its not all bad.

Subby is a whiny little biatch. Wahhhh! Some people still enjoy bands that have continued to rock for many many years!

johnnyTex 2009-04-29 11:04:20 AM
I'll agree with you about the tourists wearing the Keep Austin weird shiat, those guys are...weird.
However we will still gladly trade life south of the 'rainbow divide' for not having to hear the Dave Mathews Band play while the frat boys rape each other.

here, have some whiskey. we'll chill!!

Dave blows, as does this ACL lineup, I was just saying that plenty of Austinites go to ACL (or went before it completely sucked like the past 2 years) and especially SXSW, even those in the south. It ain't just frat boys (especially SXSW).

I have no clue where I am going to live when I bring the german girlfriend back to live there in August :)

Roswellite13 [TotalFark] 2009-04-29 12:11:09 PM
Came for the music snobs and whiny Austinites. Not disappointed.

tricycleracer 2009-04-29 12:19:05 PM
Looks like I need to meet a chick from Austin between now and then so I have a place to crash.

See Girl Talk live. Thank me later.
