As long as the master tapes exist, no problem. You can make new pressing masters no problem.

WhyteRaven74: As long as the master tapes exist, no problem. You can make new pressing masters no problem.

I mean, pretty much this. Yeah, you need to find a guy who can actually still master for vinyl rather than CD, but it's not like they threw away the Mona Lisa or something.

WaltzingMathilda [TotalFark] 2009-04-27 06:14:00 PM
More concerned about losing Pavement masters ... but I think we'll be fine.

El Chode [TotalFark] 2009-04-27 06:20:52 PM
They just threw them out? I didn't read the article, but I'd assume they would be items that could easily be auctioned to bring SOME money in.

I don't think so. It's not like they would be considered their property like it would be if the label went out of business.

Dammit, I still got Mogwai vinyl to pick up, and these farks just doubled the price overnight

Eat_At_Milliways: these farks just doubled the price overnight

Except for the hassle of making new masters to press the vinyl from, getting someone else to press the records isn't much of a problem. It's not like they can't ever again press more Mogwai vinyl.

Unfortunately I don't have enough brown or grey clothing to read Paste on a regular basis.

I know I'm about to open myself up to a lot of ridicule, but am I the only one around here that likes Cat Power? She seems to get a lot of shiat from the Fark crowd...

:-/

deevo 2009-04-27 09:48:01 PM
One time I got on a bus and sat down and the guy behind me said, "you seem like someone who'd listen to Cat Power." I turned around and said, "what the fark'd you say that for? Cat Power sucks!" before realizing that he's on the phone. We both stared at each other and had a good laugh.

She did an amazing show in Australia once where she basically melted down... it was so excruciating to watch. Like listening to the new Chris Cornell record, you felt bad just being there.

Evidently she is absolutely awful in every respect.

nickxero 2009-04-27 09:57:51 PM
What's wrong with Cat Power? I don't LIKE her, but there's no reason to have a hate on for her...

That said, that sucks for Matador. Any money they were making on vinyl is probably going to be gone getting new pressing masters done.

MC O'Brien 2009-04-27 10:05:27 PM
Pretty cool article about vinyl on the LA Times the other day:
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-et-vinyl26-2009apr26,0,740572 9 .story

They said there are only a few businesses that even press vinyl anymore. And there aren't any manufacturing companies that make vinyl pressing machines anymore. So hold onto those Elliott Smith, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse and Sonic Youth vinyls!

If vinyl sales are up so high, why are the pressing plants going under?

I think she is talented and makes honest music. Not my cup of tea, but good anyway.

The sales are up statistically, but vinyl still is only a niche market.

It's the out of control hype factor. The indie press creams over her as some sort of musical genius/second coming and she's just good.

She did also call an album "The Greatest" which is just asking for it. LOL

zunkus 2009-04-27 10:23:49 PM
I have to say I actually enjoy Cat Power also, as for the vinyl I have only recently(within the past year or two) started buying it. I'm such a tool I usually buy something on iTunes so I have a copy for my ipod then if I can find it I will buy it on vinyl.

If this ever happened to Hard Wax, I would just die. :(

I like Cat Power. I once read a fairly interesting article about her in a hotel in Portland in, what I assume was, the local Portland paper.

/was pretty hung over

//also like Superchunk

flaminglip: How is that place? Good service? Shipping times?

Got 300 bucks I could borrow?

Probably very superior service, I never used them though. Their mastering service is one of the go-to places for electronic music. I was looking for information regarding their pressing plant, but I can't find it. I know Stefan Betke (Pole, who was on Matador Records as well) is/was an employee.

$300 isn't enough. I don't think $3,000 would be enough.

peachpicker [TotalFark] 2009-04-27 11:04:19 PM
I like a few of Cat Power's songs, but MY GOD does that woman just drone on most of the time. Eight out of ten songs she's like auditory lithium.

/Nude as the News is a good song
//so is Living Proof

ArturoBandini 2009-04-27 11:14:52 PM
Reason #1 to like Cat Power: Nude as the News (new window)

Reason #2 to like Cat Power: Cross Bones Style (new window) (the song, not the video. In fact, just close your eyes and listen. Yeah, I don't like the video)

I've seen Chan play some bad shows, and she's definitely not in my top ten musicians/bands, but she's written some tremendous songs. I can see why she's not some folks' thing, but she's far from horrible. Plus there's one degree of separation between her and the late, incredible Rock*a*Teens, so that's gotta count for something...

ArturoBandini 2009-04-27 11:17:02 PM
peachpicker - ha, I was searching youtube as you were posting! Beat me to it.

And yes, Living Proof is definitely another good song.

Vinyl knowledge fail in this thread.

Just paid $1200 to United Vinyl for 1000 12" records, wrapped and slapped.

Even with the masters, you still have to have the acetates and stamps made, after it is re-mastered, to ensure good sound quality, in synch with their press, etc etc

Matador was the only label still putting records out like crazy for awhile when no one else when very few others were.... (read: the late 90's through the early 00's)

This is almost as sad as the demise of Touch and Go

Cat Power? People still listen to that crap? She sold out years ago. The age of the Pabst-drinking indie hipster is over. Move on!

Old fart here. I'm STILL pissed at the Johnson Wax company chucking out recordings of "Fibber McGee and Molly" when they stopped sponsoring the show. They threw out a couple of hundred transcription discs. Often the ONLY known copy of show.

Welcome to my world kids and get off my lawn!

Early TV suffered from this phenomanon, too. Show were either not recorded(no technology), recorded sparsely, or wiped for tape reuse. The BBC is particularly guilty of this, especially with early shows, and the music variety shows. NBC and CBS, along with ABC, were also guilty of wiping.

Another example is the old DuMont televison network that existed from the mid-50's to the mid-60's(damned expensive marketing tool, that was). The entire DuMont archive was, according to multiple sources, dumped into the Upper New York Bay. Just wrap your head around that.

I got into Cat Power when she started playing with old Al Green dude. Really white people got upset because her music was no longer so white, but I like it a lot more. If you don't want to hear Teenie Hodges on guitar I don't even know what to tell you.

You'd think by now you would have had a little experience trying to force that into conversations and would have evolved some sort of subtlety about it so you wouldn't look like you just wanted attention.

The only good thing Cat Power ever did was attempt to sing "War Pigs" with the Flaming Lips on Austin City Limits. Seriously, she's like Tori Amos without the hotness and the musical talent.
