stealing a tradesman's tools - any kind of tradesman - is pretty much about as low as you can go on the thief-scum ladder. I guess you have theft from charities and candy from babies beneath that, but that's about it.

Sweet zombie Jesus, I never thought I'd see the Monks mentioned in a Fark headline. +1 for that alone, subby.

the monks! they were bashing their guitars with objects to create music when thurston and lee were mere pups!

Anyone that keeps Thurston Moore's pompous crap from entering my ears is ok with me.

They kind of deserved it, IMHO.

Psht, they all stole it from the Beatles.

Actually, pretty much everyone since the Beatles has stolen everything from them...

A shred of decency and possibly some redemption in trying times. I'll take whatever feel good story I can get these days.

Now if only some returns the guitar they stole from The Stooges to it's rightful own...

oh

nickxero 2009-04-27 09:52:06 PM
They were all stealing from The Yardbirds and The Creation.

Good name drop on the Monks though, subby.

The guitar in question.

I remember when their gear was stolen! It's amazing that a decade later one of the guitars was found. Even more amazing is the fan who identified it, bought it, and now is sending it back to SY on his dime! That just goes to show how cool SY is, and how much their fans love them!

Can't wait to see SY at the Capitol Hill Block Party this year! Kudos to the CHBP staff for booking Sonic Youth! Seattle - Fark Yeah!

/BTW: Thurston Moore is a Pleaidian. That's why he hasn't aged in 30 years. You heard it here first.

I was really hoping more of their stuff got returned, but baby steps, baby steps.

/glad to see the love for the Monks.
// SY are still a great live show, old guitars or not.

Dicks. Every Fark thread has at least one.
This time it's you.

As someone who has to throw my gear in a trailer and hope that people won't steal it during load in/outs (you just can't have someone staring at it 24/7)...This x1000.

Can we get everyone who circulated that email from Sonic Youth in 1999 to do the same when this big news is announced? That will account for 50% of internets over the next month. Should be fun.

Listening to Sonic Nurse right now, so getting a kick out of these 3 Guinness, er, comments. Yes, that's it. Comments.

Oh, yeh. There was a new SY track (new window) at Pitchfork this week. It's not bad at all.

I only listen to their album Daydream Nation because I'm so scene.

Glenechocreek 2009-04-28 01:10:15 AM
Buddy Guy invented feedback, but the geniuses at Chess Records forbade him to do anything that wild.

Check out the video of Hendrix taping one of Buddy's shows. Buddy was the teacher, and Jimi was the student.

sorry, my Sarcasm Detector needed calibrating. I'm so used to SY threads being populated with "That Guy Who Saw Them Open for Pearl Jam in 1992 And They Sucked" people.

Thanks. That was a pretty good jam, much more energetic than many of the songs from the prior few albums. Things started to get shoegazery with 1,000 leaves and continued down that path on NYC G&F, Murray Street, Sonic Nurse. Rather Ripped was a bit of a revival of the rock. Hopefully this album will trend that direction

Since SY certainly had an influence on shoegaze, that's a bit redundant. though I have no idea what you're talking about either. Thousand Leaves onward is more in-debt to post-Rock whereas I thought Rather Ripped sounded more akin to the sprawling rock of Daydream Nation.

PYROY 2009-04-29 09:21:37 AM
Wow, I always thought the Beatles were the first to intentionally record feedback, but according to wiki that's true and false..now I'm confused.

I just meant the albums between Washing Machine and Rather Ripped were mellower, with less of the punk influence the earlier albums.

true, but I wouldn't go as far as to call in shoegaze.

I'm not a big fan of categorizing music by genre, let alone sub-genre. In my humble opinion, genres exist for two reasons: 1) Teaching/Learning technique; and 2) Marketing. When actually playing music or listening to music, I don't think genres are relevant at all.

Seriously, I thought we settled this in the 80s/90s with all the genre-mixing mulatto music. I guess Linkin Park showed up to the party and ruined it for everyone.
