Chevy Vega FTW!

/actually had one of those POS.

My brother wrecked three cars within a month of getting his license. They first one was a new 97 Camero my mother thought would be great for his birthday.

Long story short and three cars later he had an 82 flaming orange Chevette. Kids need stupid learner cars.

raanne 2009-04-26 08:49:03 PM
awwww - my first car was an 87 chevette. powder blue & rust... with a pull out / push in to set the radio, and no cassette player. ahhh... memories. :)

I can swear that my first car, a 1969 Ford Boss Mustang with bald bias ply tires, may not have made me a better driver, but it nearly did mother nature a favor and culled me from the geme pool more than a few times.

I reproduced anyway.

I had an Pontiac Astre which was the upgrade to the Vega. Not a bad vehicle all in all.

So, something to limit the top speed is new? Nothing to see here governor... move along.

That was the solution in my youth. Had a cop "clock" me at 117mph once(huzzuh for young and stupid!)but refused to accept that there wasn't somoething wrong with his radar gun. gave me a ticket for 84 in a 55 to be nice and keep me from getting a suspension. nice guy.

1964 Karmann Ghia. And this was in 1999!

I'll never forget the day it decided it was going to fall out of 4th gear unless I physically held the shift lever in place. Good times...

If I was in charge, no consumer vehicle would go over 50, ever. Eat me, drivers.

This is not new. Chevy suburbans and silverado's have had that for years.

Learned to drive stick on a Chevette - well sort of learned, if you forgot the clutch, you could just sort of thump the stick and it would bounce out of gear long enough to shift it without too much noise.

0-60 sometimes, with a tailwind, downhill.

Teenagers should be issued single seat mopeds with 65 mph top speeds.

May the smartest survive!

Good. Teenagers are in too big of a hurry to go bang their teachers these days.

Is this the car nostalgia thread?

My first "hoopdie" was a '79 Caprice hand-me-down from my older brother. The first time I was pulled over and asked if I knew how fast I was going I truthfully responded, "I'm afraid not officer, the speedometer needle fell off a week ago."

Did not get a ticket.

'81 Chevette, blue with yellow/orange racing stripes, a hole through the passenger side floor, and it kept running for 5 seconds after you shut it off. I think when they told me it was "good in the snow" it meant that it was expendable in the snow.

Nothing like riding a Motobecane with lousy brakes, without a helmet, in the rain, to remind you that thou art mortal.

My First car was a '84 Pontiac Firefly, 4 door+ hatchback, standard. Paid $500 for it from some farmer with money I mowed lawns for. First time ever driving it, and only the third time I ever drove a stick, got pulled over for speeding. officer asked me if I knew how fast i was going, and i replied "First time driving a stick officer, i'm having trouble finding exactly the right gear for this speed" and got off without a ticket for 65k in a 50k zone. whoo!

Zimmy 2009-04-26 11:22:16 PM
Needs to be a device that makes some kids drive faster. I don't know what it is, but both my niece and I drive under the speed limit often; 40 in a 55, for example.

My friend had one of those, same color and everything. We called it the Blue Mule. Had it over 80 many a time.

My first car was an 82 Buick Skylark. It was light blue too. Got a ticket for 75 in a 55. I had slowed down to take a turn and the cop was around the corner. Farker was pegged before.

meph79 2009-04-26 11:26:56 PM
After the muffler fell off my 92 ranger and wrapped around the rear axle sending me into a 720 spin and into the ditch on it's side, I got to drive a rusted out 1975 ford LTD

www.truespoke.net

It was the same color as that one kinda, course mine had a lot more rust. Oh and no speedometer, no gas gauge, brakes only worked half the time, and the kicker, the Exhaust leaked into the drivers compartment. But by god, that thing had the 400 cleveland v8 and could fly. I think since I had no idea how fast it could go. Ahhh to be young and stupid

Got my mom's 1980 Mazda GLC up to an indicated 85mph! It took about 5 miles and a wicked tail wind. But, it was rear wheel drive and if you "accidentally" spilled some oil on the road you could do some wicked burnouts!
