They really need to get a handful of people with common sense to review the sex offender laws and give those laws a thorough scrubbing.

Yes, yes, those nasty, filthy laws need a thorough cleaning if they're going to be out there being enforced and all. Dirty dirty.

Good. There's a big difference between a kiddy diddler and a drunk teen streaking through a football game. That kind of thing should not haunt them for the rest of their lives unless they truly committed a crime.

It's not just that. Every time there's some sort of sex-related crime, or a kid disappears, the police go out and interview all the registered sex offenders in the area.

If the registry gets all clogged up with people that aren't really sex offenders, then valuable police time and resources are wasted. In the worst case, the registry becomes useless, in which case, why have it?

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2009-04-26 06:00:04 PM
good.

firefly212 2009-04-26 06:00:49 PM
I think the changes will actually get pushed through here... most of the local DAs are for streamlining the process. There is a huge cost to labeling people "sex offenders"... registration, check-ins, monitoring, ensuring they aren't living too close to a sensitive area, etc... we could use that money for actual crime prevention, or we could use it to punish a drunken teenager for life because they decided to keep drinking on their porch long after they lost track of where their pants were. All else being equal though, I don't have a problem with public nudity... unless you're spanking the monkey or inappropriately touching someone else (also, no riding mass transit for you, nekkid guys/gals)... then I'm fine with it. If you do something disorderly, like running on the field in a football game, it really shouldn't make a difference whether you're clothed or not.

THIS

Let's start out with removing someone charged with "public urination" from the sex offenders registry. Some who do this are somewhat drunk & are just trying to relieve themselves, not flash people.

Next, a 19 year old male has sex with his 17 year old girlfriend could end up on the sex offender registry in Oregon because the age of consent for both genders is 18. Saw it happen to a neighbor's son when the girlfriend's mother took a dislike to her daughter's 19 year old boyfriend and filed statutory rape charges against him, even though the sex was consensual. He ended up serving 2 years in prison, had to attend sex offender counseling sessions when he was released from prison & has to be on the sex offender registry for the rest of his life.

Subtle Correction 2009-04-26 06:10:50 PM
But then how will we teach children that nudity is wrong?

If you take streakers and protester off the registry, you will be telling children that these things are OK. I don't want my tax money being spent on telling children that it's OK to show other people your privates.

I wonder how many nudists got themselves smacked onto the sex offenders list...

Wonderful concept this stupid list is...

Why doesn't the stupid friggin list lists only violent offenders?

/ I list Sex offender lists as the stupidest lists since the list lists literally anything that can be listed sexual.
// Dont list me, bro!

Great Janitor 2009-04-26 06:13:43 PM
I have no problem with the sex offender registry list when it contains actual sex offenders. Put rapists on there, put child predators there, but dear god, leave off teens who take pics of themselves or other teens (we all had classmates who did this same shiat with Polaroid cameras) naked. Leave off the man who got drunk and pissed in public and please, let's stop this whole "Think of the children" bullshiat, because really, that's what's turned the sex offender list from a valuable tool to a list that you can get on just for even non-sexual reasons.

No, no, you really do deserve to be lumped in with child molesters and rapists and similar scumbags if you flash your peen in public for five seconds. There is absolutely nothing irrational or heavy handed about that. Nope.

Meh, it something else for prude, middle aged white moms to be outraged and scared about.

The funny thing is they all probably used to be whores in their younger days anyway...and probably will be again in a few years after the kids leave and they get divorced

To bad they have made sex offender lists all but useless by making it as easy as me forgetting to close a curtain while I take a dump to get on one.

Outrage trumps common sense once again.

I came here just to add my "THIS". Seriously, violent sex offenders and pedophiles only on the registry. It'll save money for the agencies maintaining the ordinance, and it'll save those individuals who didn't belong there in the first place the embarrassment of being listed.

I actually have to agree with the ACLU on this one. Now if I could get them to work as diligently to protect my 2nd Amendment rights, I'd send them a donation. Until then . . .

Some of the pumpkin runners took a plea agreement down to disorderly conduct, something like a $25 fine, and a clean slate after 6 month unsupervised probation.

That the cops charged indecent exposure was unfortunate, but they don't make the laws. At least the DA's office down in Boulder is not so dim as to pursue the indecent exposure thing.

Maybe in some jurisdictions, but not so much Boulder.

They have far too much work to do finding the Ramsey killer.

Here's the simple answer for all the whiners who don't think public urination belongs on the list.

Don't urinate in public.

Here's the simple answer for all the whiners who don't think underage sex belongs on the list.

Don't have underage sex.

The sex offender list isn't an investigative tool. It's a deterrent.

Public urination and underage sex are wrong. The both violate common decency, and also have negative effects upon society.

Delawheredad 2009-04-26 06:25:05 PM
No fan of the ACLU but I support what they are trying to do. Maybe they can make everybody happy and team up with a right-leaning legal defense organization and file together. There are some folks on the right who also agree that the sex offender registries are far too large and broad.

pktloss 2009-04-26 06:25:15 PM
The whole public urination thing is hilarious. Not only is it unlikely that a child would be awake, and hanging out near dumpsters at bar close. But really, my penis isn't that scary. Even if you're peeing on a bush at high noon, unless it's in the middle of a children's playground I wouldn't really push the exposure part.

I hate that one... I only know three definitions to that word. The animal, city and bullying behavior.

Which makes it confusing.

fusillade762 2009-04-26 06:26:52 PM
That's just silly. You don't list streakers as sex offenders. You just taze the crap out of them.

rry6961 2009-04-26 06:27:40 PM
It's about time someone did something to limit who gets on the sex offender registry. It makes it hard to filter through the ones that did nothing besides have an underage girlfriend when the guy was 18 or getting drunk and peeing in public, or these protestors in the article. It also waters down what it means to be a sex offendor. How can you lump in a protestor with a child molestor?
