SHHH!! Don't let the teatards find out about this, Rick. You had them all worked up and it would be a shame to highlight the fact that their ideas are stupid.

Hah Sounds like someone is gearing up for a run at President.

Ehhhh...I can kinda understand him seeing a difference between arguing what he sees as an overextension of the federal government, and saying that same government has a responsibility to protect its citizens. However, he's still an ass.

He said when Texas entered the union in 1845 it was with the understanding it could pull out. However, according to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, Texas negotiated the power to divide into four additional states at some point if it wanted to but not the right to secede.

I did not know that. That's pretty interesting.

Require America's conservative enemies to swear an oath of loyalty to the union before giving them any more federal aid. fark them.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought. It's not like he asked for that TARP bailout, he asked for help with an epidemic, and given that Texas sits right against Mexico and in Mexico it's killing people, I don't see this as a dumbass move nor a hypocritical move.

Aarontology [TotalFark] 2009-04-26 05:13:45 PM
This should be a test for Texas. If they can stick to their guns and not take any federal money as long as Obama is in office, they can go their merry way.

The Texas-Mexico War of 2019 should be entertaining.

Good article. Thanks! 538 always has such cool stuff on it. As a Chicagoan thinking about moving to Austin this winter, I would support that plan.

It would take completely loopy people like the Huffington Post to even draw this comparison.

Not wanting federal "stimulus" money is quite different than wanting federal money in order to deal with a natural disaster.

There's no farking way. Texas would be a narco-state in matter of months. All of the minuteman and state pride in the world wouldn't change that.

Calling the President a "tyrant" then asking him for aid of any kind is douchey.

It is hypocritical, but not stupid. However, he accepted a VAST majority of the bailout money. Or was that Jindal. . . or was it both? I know Jindal accepted like 97-99% of it and acted like it was a big deal he was rejecting some.

And talking about secession is quite different from merely not wanting federal stimulus money. Or, rather, trying to act like you don't want it while taking as much as possible.

To be fair, Perry didn't say Texas should secede. He believed that they had the option though from the annexation.

But what have the Romans ever done for Texas?

Gyrfalcon [TotalFark] 2009-04-26 05:20:01 PM
If you don't need the federal government, Ricky, then you don't get it. That's what "secession" means. You don't get to secede and then ask for money to help you leave.

That is why, despite supporting most of the rest of the country, California has not actually left the Union yet. Well, that and America is still the greatest country in the world. And also we don't have the army to annex Mexico and hold it profitably. Yet.

Agreed. Besides, if it does become pandemic in Texas, it's not like it will stop at the state border.

This statement DOES make his previous statement look extra-stupid, though. Not only should he understand his own state's history and relevant documents before making such a pointless and divisive remark, but it ignores the simple reality that his state is better off in the Union, as simple as that. Were Texas to secede somehow, the first thing they would have to do is send an Ambassador to Washington to beg for a military alliance and foreign aid. And help from the CDC and NIH on the Pig Flu.

Annnd here come the Fark Independents that will yet to act dumb and say asking for help with the flu is different than the stimulus. WRONG. No member do the United States, no automatic help from the government. Your an independent nation now. Fend for your own self.

PS Sure you won't have to pay anymore federal taxes but you think the migration of teabaggers are going to be happy when they have to pay some type of tax to the new independent nation of Texas?

/Id give it 2 years before Mexico overruns Tejas

I think if Rick is so gung ho about Texas seceding, he should first pay to take care of this crisis out of the state treasury than go begging to the gub'mint, you know, as a test run for the Lone Star Nation.

5_second_rule 2009-04-26 05:42:27 PM

How come Texas doesn't have its own CDC. They didn't see this coming. They give the government so much money that could of keep few dollars to build and maintain their own facilities, right?

Perry looks like a fool right now and your attempts to deflect aren't helping.
