Wow that went in the wrong thread. The post here was supposed to be:

I'm glad to see Pensacola is recovering these artifacts instead of salvageers and wreck divers. The biggest problem for underwater archaeology in the Great Lakes are those zebra mussels that were introduced into the environment about 10 years ago. We sent a team from ECU to a wreck for field school 2006 and those things have begun covering everything along the floor bottom.

The plane was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mission from Glenview
As the big fighters go it was bigger than most
With 2 wings and a Captain well seasoned.

Yeah, they used to launch submarines out of Manitowoc, WI; they've got a submarine there actually, to tour. 'twas my first ever job, making an astounding $4.75 an hour, way back when. Pretty cool pictures of them cruising down the lake, doing depth trials in the middle of Lake Michigan.

It's a hurricane warning flag, intended for the NHL thread. However, our department's dive team has started underwater hockey at ECU, so that nicely ties it all together.

Not really. They just went underground at the end of the war. You see them once in a while.

George Bush the elder trained off those converted training carriers that were based at Navy Pier. One of the carriers was scrapped, the other was to become a museum and pier attraction, but scavengers paid off the security guards to look the other way while they stripped her metal practically down to the waterline. The city decided the thing was too far gone and they scrapped it too.

Not even then. Military remains are the property of the government in perpetuity. I learned this on fark on the thread about the guys that salvaged an old english warship that had tons of gold on it.

Having just dealt with this for a NOAA project, different services have different rules. Any aircraft or vessel that once belonged to the U.S. Navy is always Navy property, and they don't like giving permission to recover artifacts. This is why the Navy is recovering this SBD (and they also have recovered an F6F and another SBD from the Lakes and turned them into exhibits at the museum in Pensacola.

Most of the other navies have the same policy, which is why it's very, very, very illegal to swipe stuff from the HMS Bedforshire or U-boats off the coast of NC (though people do it way too much). The USAF, on the other hand, doesn't care a bit about any of their aircraft.

You can't be farking serious. WWII started when the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Poland.

Alla y'all are wrong- it was when George Washington planted the flag at Waterloo. There's a famous statue of it in Washington D.C. I think.
