There's a picture, opposite me, of my primitive ancestry which stood on rocky shores and kept the beaches shipwreck free.

The lighthouse was built by Robert Stevenson - grandfather of the famous Treasure Island author.

It was built in 1982 and remains a working lighthouse, although it is now remotely monitored from Edinburgh.

Incredible.

They really knew how to craft lighthouses in the old days.

It's more incredible when you realize Robert Stevenson came out of a 132 year retirement to build it.

I tripped over that myself in the article.

The song is about a nightlight with a blue canary cover, which watches over the room. The primitive ancestry the nightlight refers to, is his perceived ancestor, the lighthouse.

Aw thanks! In one of the last BiyS threads we had, someone posted a bunch of really awesome paintings based on TMBG songs... Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Well, that's what the song is about on the surface.
Make a little birdhouse in your soul. While you're at it, keep the nightlight on inside the birdhouse in your soul.

These are wise words. If you listen to that song over and over while high, that line will manifest itself in your psyche. Who wouldn't want a bright spot always in their soul? I know I do.

I've been to a cafe in Scotland that's only accessible via ferry, on an island on Loch Lomond.

cbunny 2009-04-26 01:15:59 PM
But they share their neighbourhood with the Ministry of Defence who use the area as an army bombing range for two weeks every year.

John added: "We will have to close the café a couple of weeks a year when they bomb the area."

It's official, the Nanny state is out of control.

I don't know, but they put on a fantastic show. My favorite part was when John Flansburgh played the tuba and then refused to wear the fez hats that the local DJ had spent months collecting and talking about giving them every freaking morning before the concert. Because they were her favorite band and they should just wear a fez. It would so be funny if they wore fezes. But they were all WTF GTFO and she was humiliated and never played her favorite band again.

I always thought "Countless Screaming Argonauts" would be a great band name. I guess it would only work for a TMBG tribute band but still...kind of like how I always wanted a Floyd tribute band called "Fat and Psychopathic Wives".

I lost my lucky ball & chain, now she's four years gone, just five feet tall and sick of me and all my rattling on.

She threw away her baby-doll, I held on to my pride, but I was young and foolish then, I feel old and foolish now...

MrS and I just watched Brand Upon the Brain, filmed in Seattle, centered around an old lighthouse. Bizarre

Brilliant. I would SO go see a band called that. And if they flat sucked, I would probably go again.

Weezer plays an insanely good cover of Time BTW, with the drummer singing and nailing the Gilmore solo while the opening band covered the kit. Not sure why I mention that, except I'm still blown away by that show, slightly hung over, and wanted to.

They are good lines, though I'm partial to "Just because you're floating doesn't mean you haven't drowned." They write some delightfully cheery sounding depressing lyrics.

This isn't about "Birdhouse in Your Soul" but I have a question for the various TMBG fan Farkers.

There's a weird theme that runs through a bunch of their songs, more than I'll be able to list right now.

"The Statue Got Me High," "The Bells Are Ringing," "Spiraling Shape" and at least a few others are all about inanimate objects that hypnotize and entrance and enslave people. I can't have been the first person to notice this, but... uh... what's up there? What's that aboot?

/for a real mindfark, actually read the lyrics to "End of the Tour"
//actually don't, or any of their other lyrics. Just sit back and enjoy the happy pretty music!

You said: What is that song even about?

Hell, what are any of those guys' songs about?

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune--without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.
