How many pars would a parsnip snip if a parsnip did snip pars?

I doubt there's anything wrong with woodchuck, either.

Tastes like chicken balls.

//Woodchuck Recipes

Woodchuck, also known as groundhog, should be handled in accordance with the general rules for game in the field. The blood should be drained, and the entrails removed and the body cavity wiped clean. When hung for 48 hours, they are ready to the skinned and cooked.

Woodchuck meat is dark, but mild flavored and tender. It does not require soaking; however, many people like to soak it overnight in salt water. If the woodchuck is caught just before he begins his winter sleep, there is an insulating fat layer under the skin. Remove excess fat. remove 7 to 9 "kernels" (scent glands) in the small of the back and under the forearms. Parboil the meat of older animals; cook by recipes calling for chicken or rabbit.

///yum

It might also be noted that the Depression also gave us some of the boldest criminals in our history as well--because folks were desperate to NOT go down like that.

It's a trade off--hard times bring out the real go getters, and I'm not sure that folks are really ready for that yet...

If a person has to choose between woodchuck/parsnips and starvation...um, i's meat and a vegetable. properly cook and season, and presto! it's food.

What's wrong with parsnip? I eat it often and have never found a grocery store that didn't have it.

Rhubarb...now THAT'S Satan's veggie.

The only time I've had parsnips was in England. They were inedible. I feel the same way about rutabagas.

Just don't tell the kids what they are eating until they are finished and say that it was good. Otherwise they will never eat it.

It also needs to be noted their violence was visited upon well-to-do white people who thought the real elite in this country would take care of them. Boy, were they surprised when their loved ones were kidnapped, murdered, robbed, extorted, etc and no one came to their rescue.

Are you listening 91 percent white Republican party? Old money will take care of itself and even prosper. But you don't belong.

I'm sick and tired of these depression stories. The people who lived in the depression were highly inefficient and stupid. I'm not saying people these days are much smarter but if things get much worse around here I'm not going to stick around and eat woodchuck or whatever the hell these retards ate just because, "that's the only thing we had access to". The media is a joke and is trying to make it seem like we're in a bad spot...we're not. People have such a high level of pride and ego and they simply don't want to work these days. Everyone wants the high paying job, with benefits, and paid time off. Get your farking shiat together and go to work. There are jobs out there.

That's why this is nothing like a real depression.

DemonEater 2009-04-26 12:19:04 PM
Parsnips are fantastic. They're kind of like a white carrot with a stronger flavour. They, along with turnips, are what we ate before we invented potatoes.

Peel them, cut them into quarters, roast them alongside a chicken or turkey. It's not Christmas dinner without them.

oroku_saki 2009-04-26 12:21:33 PM
The recession we are experiencing nowadays is different. First off, ginormous families are not nearly as common today as they were back during the Great Depression. Back then, food stamps and welfare programs were also non-existent.

Compared to the story in TFA, we still have it pretty good.

Skippy the Wonder Lizzard 2009-04-26 12:21:36 PM
My "adult" children, 28 & 26, still cut the crust off of white bread because it's "gross." Of course they still live with their mother too. . . 'Nuff said? Not having pizza four times a week is their idea starving. Yes, you're getting the right mental image. . .

Parsnips are great roasted with potatos and other root veggies and are a main ingredient in Pasties. I've had Possum and Racoon (not bad), so Woodchuck would be similar. All in how it's cooked.

thenateman 2009-04-26 12:22:00 PM
Old timers have the greatest stories about the depression. One guy told me how he ate a pigeon he grabbed off his bathroom window ledge.

This old doctor told me how kids would come to his parents' door asking for a crust of bread, but they'd be turned away because his family already ate everything.

This same doctor warned me, "this happened in a time when people had nothing and were used to nothing. Imagine what will happen now, when people are used to having cell phones and fancy cars and there are lots and lots of guns."

Personally, I hope it doesn't get that bad. But I'm kind of a peacenik that way.

Aside from a few more psychotics probably flipping their lids and going on shooting sprees, I doubt it will get much worse.

This is currently nothing in comparison to the Great Depression.

People are more educated and worldly, so able to improvise better.
Safety and processes have improved so conditions aren't miserable.
Entertainment is more accessible, so you don't have to go insane with boredom and depression. (you can, but you don't have to)
Income to prices and products are more leveled out so you don't have to spend a week's wages on just getting your clothes.
Technology has made life more comfortable and efficient.
Communication means that bad things are brought out faster and solutions can be figured out faster.
etc, etc, etc.

Just spend some time looking at a simple 20's prospective film and you'd realize the difference.

Yes its bad, yes we need to prevent it from coming worse
Do what you have to do, and get it done.
But this is still not really close to what it was back then.

Also too proud to beg for work, or be sneaky and resourceful. If broadleaf weeds and field mice were all there was on your land, you thanked God for those and didn't go off hunting rabbits. Because b'God you knew your place. And heaven forbid you got involved in some unholy Jew business like bartering or selling stuff for scrap.

I think my father used to say that. He also told us how he walked to school every day, in the snow with no shoes, uphill-both ways.

But, since the worst of the depression is gonna be in the cities, where dozens of people don't have a clue about hunting, I think the best bet is just hobo stew (new window).

Collards are amazing but beet tops will do in a pinch. Had parsnips last night - cut into slivers and roasted with olive oil. Delicious.

Pestifer 2009-04-26 12:36:03 PM
I've had pickled pigs' feet, chicken gizzards, parsnips, rutabagas, and yuca (not yucca)and loved them all. Never had woodchuck, but I like rabbit and I can't imagine that it's too different if it's well prepared. Same with squirrel.

Hope I never have to eat city pigeon, but I've had pigeon and liked it, too.

We breed like a 3rd world shiathole back then. No wonder things were much worse. You would have trouble feeding 10 mouths in good times.
