MI6 is conducting secret anti-drug operations in the USA ? Isn't that rather over-stretching its remit ?

SpinStopper [TotalFark] 2009-04-26 06:27:53 AM
The agency yesterday confirmed the data loss but said it had happened soon after Soca had been set up in 2006, "whilst staff were still working to the data-handling policies of precursor agencies".

At least they got that part right. Always blame the previous administration.

They didn't tell their people not to forget things on the bus ;)

Even more importantly: there's public transportation in SC?!?

What is it with British officials, secret documents, and mass transit? You silly Limeys need to go back to handcuffed briefcases.

We have always had many operatives working within the USA as we speak (#1 Barack Obama, but shhh, don't tell the Americans).

Can those people down there even use computers? I mean, hardly any of them are white, so what could they really do with something that requires technology to exploit? Had the agent lost some cocaine, a burro, or a machete, then there might be a problem. With a memory stick they'll either wear it as jewelry or try to pick their noses with it. This is a non-story, move along, thank you drive through.

The incident, which was hushed up by the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca), the agent's employer, is an embarrassment for the government. It is another blow for Jacqui Smith, the home secretary, who has ultimate responsibility for Britain's anti-drugs operations and the safeguarding of criminal intelligence.

Jacqui Smith actions show she considers George Orwell's 1984 to be a manual for government. She obviously supports meddling with other counties politics for the totally bogus "War on Drugs", (which inadvertently created the drug cartels in the first place)

Link (new window)

The fact that this totally paranoid control-freak biatch continues to even get one shred of respect from anyone proves 100% that Britain is circling the drain.

It was really more of a joke than a troll. I have more respect for the intelligence of (most) Farkers to think I'd get any bites on something as blatantly ridiculous as that.

This has to be a Troll but I'll bite.

This has to be the most stupid post I've read. You think only America (white America) has computers? Well hey, what about Obama? He's black. Do you really think those non-whites even use computers????? South America is not in the Dark Ages. In many ways they are more advanced than we are: Brazil is almost entirely Oil Free having gone Green years ago for example.

Watch and realize how slow and quiet the world used to be. And yet you could still spy and assassinate and be a double-agent.

I've been posting on my local newspaper's site. Where I'm from, that kind of statement would be considered deeply intellectual. My troll-meter might need to be recalibrated.

Is there anyone other than me that feels that these highly publicized incidents of blatant security failures are merely a cover story for members of the agencies involved who are 'on the take'?

"Oops, I left the memory stick on the bus, tipping off the people who send me nice little brown envelopes every month about how much my bosses know about their operation. Oh well, mistakes are bound to happen!"

12.fl.oz.: If the information is that sensitive then why is it not in some kind of code? Just wondering.

Well, I'm not too good at decrypting 256 bit type 1 encryption by hand. Though if it is only sensitive a type III encryption should work.

Just use 256 bit AES. That's pretty much good for anything.

It may sound kookie, but printing people's names in newspapers whom work for Secret Serious is kind of counter-productive, no? The secret is kind of moot now.

Those crafty North Americans, able to read unencrypted flash drives. Better to lose it in Central or South America, where it might be more of a challenge. Say, Colombia.

Let's all hope that this is another Meinerzhagen Haversack Gambit. See the movie "The Lighthorsemen" for details.

On the other hand, perhaps the generous application of a cricket bat or two would help the operative to "remember" to use encryption.

There is always the possibility (albeit a very small one) that this is a misinformation exercise.

Step 1: Put names of known cartel members on list headed "Informants"
Step 2: "Accidentally" lose list.
Step 3: Wait for cartel to kill a bunch of their own people.
Step 4: Profit!

There is a rumour that this is what the CIA did when they left Vietnam.

The "war-on-drugs" might get better results when people like you and me stop supporting them.

I'm not sure if anyone else made this observation- but I'm thinking these examples of a thumbdrive that just happens to be left on a bus, or laptops that just happen to go missing at a bar or whatever and are discovered by person are really blind-drops that got messed up by some random schmo who just wanders onto the scene..
