'The flames were filling the street, like 15 feet high, and kids were throwing furniture on it and hanging from trees and screaming 'KSU' over and over again,' she said.

Every now and then, I wonder about what I missed out on by skipping college. It would seem not much.

Kent State has acquired the reputation of being the college that you go to because you have nothing better to do once you graduate high school. That reputation is occasionally confirmed by things like this.

At least the bullets are rubber this time. We're all learning how to play nice with others these days.

"What if you knew her and found her dead on the-OOF! Dude! My arm! I've got a welt!"

Not that I disagree, but maybe you don't want to know what University of Akron's reputation is quite yet :)

In a not-so-incredible coincidence, I just noticed it for the first time ever in Lajimi's post. Right before reading yours.

Odd that I never noticed before. *shrug*

"Sorry, I didn't hear that chief."

"A fire. The students have a fire."

"A lyre?"

"A FIRE! OUT IN THE OPEN! AN OPEN FIRE!"

Beer.

Seriously, every end-of-April / first-weekend-of-May the same shiat happens. Honestly, it's been quiet the last couple years because the police have been out in force, with the last major disturbance in 2001.

Warm weather, beer, and people coming in from out of town for the oft-legendary parties.

Azeroth 2009-04-26 06:03:31 AM
The fail here is of epic proportions.

Students riot & set fires, then police respond with tear gas and rubber bullets. I was around for the UofMN Hockey riots in 2002 and 2003, this response is identical and equally as appropriate.

Don't even try to compare this to 30 years ago. "College Fest, an annual ... spring rite marked by drinking and general hanging out on College Avenue" -- This is nothing more than a drunken party. Try not to disgrace those who believe in a cause by comparing them to this disgrace from Kent.

acanuck: Rubber Bullets can kill, yes, "A 3-year-old girl was killed last week by a rubber bullet in a township near Pretoria." 3 farking years old.

No worries. It's early on Sunday and I'm just waking up.

Thought the "Slave" shirt would have been out of place for 1970, sho 'nuff.

People in the 60s-70s put their lives ON the line, rather than standing IN line at Starbucks with a shirt like that, to make their point.

I love these gems from "Kristine Gill, editor of KentNewsNet.Com"

"with night sticks and 'rubber bullet guns.' "

Truly the future of hard hitting investigative journalism!

I think it's mainly because your eyes and mind are easily distracted by the pole in her head.

The right to peaceably assemble is guaranteed by the constitution. These students crossed a line and then were engaged in hooliganism, not peaceful protest. Not a moral clarity issue - just a bunch of kids with more spunk than sense - moral clarity wasn't on the menu when I was in college either.

Need to rewrite that song for the furniture-fire-fed events:

Tin coppers and firemen comin'.
We're finally on our own.
This summer I see the flamin'.
Four beds in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it.
Coppers are gunning us down.
Should have been done long ago.
What if that table was yours and
Found it flamin' on the ground?
How can you run when you know?

Looks to me like "EAVE", probably part of "LEAVE", which would make sense if you're protesting the Vietnam war and the expansion to Cambodia.

Woot. They need to use real bullets and large caliber machine guns.
