(London Times) Interesting Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong: "There are fewer and fewer rock stars... kids approach it like it would be cooler to be the guy that does Girls Gone Wild than to be Pete Townshend. That reflects where our society is right now"   (entertainment.timesonline.co.uk) divider line 73

That's a pretty accurate observation, regardless of what you might think of his band.

To be fair, I've always thought that it would be cooler to be Hefner than any rock star. The man is 83 years old and has 3 insanely gorgeous girlfriends and has had more sex from more beautiful women than anyone else on earth. And unlike rock stars that have to constantly tour or athletes that have to stay in peak physical condition, he got to spend the last couple of decades throwing huge parties in his mansion.

All three chords they use and the one original riff they came up with (and did not steal) entitle them to make this statement.

/likes their music
// Acknowledges that they are as original as bands wearing black

I'm somewhat a fan of Green Day, and I've gotta say good on them for being ambitious. Even if the results aren't mind-blowing (the track they released on iTunes, "Know Your Enemy," is pretty meh), at least they're aiming big.

"Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends" still suck balls, though.

Did you ever read his declaration, which I think was called The Playboy Manifesto? He basically came out and said, "Pfft, we don't subscribe to your puritanical and hypocritical mores, so we're creating our own society...or something to that effect. I need to re-read it. My point is that Hefner isn't admirable just because he gets more ass than a toilet seat. He's an interesting study of pure bad-assery.

Kids aspiring to be rock stars is good for society, how?

James William Bottomtooth: Kids aspiring to be rock stars is good for society, how?

I would argue that encouraging kids to master a creative art, such as a musical instrument, is good for society. Music, art and literature give us our culture. The doofy teenager practicing power chords in his parents' basement could very well grow up to create the next genre of popular music, saving us all from a lifetime of canned and choreographed Disney created acts.

/I'm looking at you, Miley Cyrus...

Oh No Melon 2009-04-26 10:22:46 AM
Maybe it's because there are so few/no rock stars to look up to nowadays? That isn't to say that nobody out there has musical talent, it's more that what's sold as an ideal to the masses is the American Idol or Miley Cyrus brand of "stardom" instead of actual raw talent. Kids aren't wanting to grow up to be rockstars because there are no rockstars.

I read a profile on Hef once, and while he came across as a pretty nice old guy, his reputation seemed all for show. The article basically said that he hosts these parties, shakes a few hands, then goes upstairs to watch movies and fall asleep. Maybe in his younger days he was getting more ass than a toilet seat, but these days it's all for show. He actually came across as rather dorky.

It has to reflect on the nature of our rockstars too, like that self-important ass.

It was new with rock-stars rebelling in the 60s, speaking out. Now groups like Green Day speak out ad-nauseum. I've heard quotes from him like "We're the only one's will the balls to speak out" when releasing an anti-Bush themed album.

And it's also not like the stars of the 1960's, they aren't as crazy or exciting to read about. Axl Rose, he was/kinda-is a crazy ass rockstar who could catch headlines and fans to watch, he was rock and roll.

Dude, seriously. Billie Joe is in, what, his mid-30s? Watt and Ving are in their 50s. How the hell could he not be a Johnny Come Lately, by your standards?

Also, keep in mind, Green Day weren't riding the crest of the neo-punk thing, they basically created it. 1039 came out in, what, 1989? That's 20 freaking years ago.

Hefner is one thing. He's respectable, genuinely nice, and very charming. A guy like Joe Francis, however, is the polar opposite on all counts.

puddleonfire 2009-04-27 01:02:08 AM
Green Day created the neo-punk thing?
Don't make me laugh.
I bet no one here besides me even HEARD of Green Day before 1994.
How about the REST of the Gillman bands who were better and more real and never got the recognition? Some industry suit comes along and touched a sparkly magic wand to Green Day's shoulders and 15 years later Billie Joe becomes a spokesman?
What bullshiat.

Security at the arena to little girls: "No pens allowed. Green Day doesn't like pens." (I remember this from some news article years ago.)

If you're going to go with Fark cliches, I think you're supposed to follow that with "This is not a repeat from 1920, 1955, 1964, 1986..."

AmazingRuss 2009-04-27 01:49:37 AM
I think it has a lot to do with the fact that the old bands don't go away anymore. There's only so much limelight, and the same people have been being promoted for decades. People know you can have the greatest band ever, and it's very likely that you will get absolutely nowhere with it.

The advent of recording makes a dent too. The best performances of the best songs by the best artists are piling up in heaps. Why waste time watching some band that might waste your time when you have thousands of recordings to choose from that sound, and in the case of video, probably look better.

The folks that control distribution like things the way they are. They've groomed their customers for 4 generations, and they know exactly what to feed them.

There's just not much motivation there to devote your waking hours to developing the virtuosity to compete for attention with all that.

Wait a minute.... who wants to be a rockstar and why?

The rockstar motif was for one generation only....maybe 1.5 generations. You think our grandparents or great grandparents dreamed of being rockstars?

Empires rise and fall. Trends and fads come and go. The Rockstar's heyday was from roughly the 50s-90s.

Give it up, Boomers. All the things you prize and value aren't wanted anymore. Today and tomorrow's generations will discover their own idols, their own passions, their own ethos' of social cohesion. They won't follow your worn shoes -- they'll get into their own things, create stuff that hasn't been invented yet; music will be made, scenes will be built, celebrities will be lavished over.......and all of your values, your ideals, your goals, and your proud sense of self-worth will be discarded from the earth as each generation usurps the last, like a snake molting old, useless skin.

Rockstar? .....how obsolete.
