Thanks subby for continuing the campaign to destroy the meaning of "ironic" as a word. I have to ask you though, what word are we going to use for irony once you and your kind has changed its meaning to "coincidence"?

I hate grammar nazis. No, the story itself may not be ironic, but if a guy goes looking for the "hidden falls" and finds them but falling off, that's irony. Subby made a joke, get off your high horse.

DanRankin 2009-04-26 12:08:52 AM
mecaenas; i think the irony of it was he tired to construct an ironic sentence.

Man 'finds' hidden falls, then falls from said falls.
when you take into account that he found the falls be for he fell, it boards on irony.

in the end i still agree with you, it's not really irony, just misfortune.

Not Irony.

Irony is what I just saw: Was at a bar and the live band decided to play "Safety Dance". Well, this chick got up and danced, then immediately fell down some stairs when the song ended.

I'm curious:
One of the men safely walked across the stream; the victim was the second to attempt to wade the stream; he slipped and attempted to grab a rock in the stream without success according to the third man who was preparing to cross.
He would strike two rock tiers below the upper tier of the waterfalls before coming to rest in the stream toward the base of the falls.
Names will be released upon location and notification of family
The U.S. Forest Service law enforcement and SC DNR are investigating.

What's left to investigate?

Yes, that's called a joke, not irony. The "pun" tag should have been used.

- Whether or not he might have been pushed off the falls by the other two.

-If anything can or should be done to prevent this from happening in the future

Well according to the grammar nazis around here, that isn't irony either. You see, the song "Safety Dance" isn't really advocating safe dancing. Had the title been literal, then it would be ironic if someone were to be injured while dancing to the song. In this case, since there is no direct relation to the song title and the message contained within, the chick falling down the stairs was just coincidental.

That's the great thing about being a grammar nazi when it comes to the use of the word irony. If you are literal enough, then nothing ever contains irony. It's either coincidental, or tragic.

/this grammar hippie says it farking close enough
//one would expect a song titled "Ironic" to contain some irony, no?
///If said song was devoid of its namesake, would that not be a smidgen ironic?

frostyservant 2009-04-26 04:21:55 AM
This is, in fact, somewhat ironic.

Fact: The falls are named "Hidden Falls."
Reasonable assumption: Falls named "Hidden Falls" would be hard to find.
Contradiction of assumption: The man's death is directly attributable to his having found the falls and acting foolishly around them.

Thus, ironic. Not very ironic, as finding the falls was not the main factor in his death -- "Falls of Wisdom" or "Prudence Falls" might have been better-- but ironic nonetheless.

Umm... Apparently, I was going to play some Super Smash Bros Melee with this guy today.

A friend of mine, his girlfriend, and some other guy were going to come over to play Super Smash Bros Melee at my room around 4 today. My friend told me we had to cancel our plans this morning because apparently the guy had a 90 foot fall to his death while hiking.

I hadn't met this guy, but I feel sorry for his friends and family. I am especially glad we found this out before calling his phone and getting one of his mourning family members to have to explain to us what had happened. My prayers are with them.

... So, now we seem to be a man down for our 2v2 Smash Brothers session...
