In 2007, a Memphis police officer shot and killed a 12-year-old boy after spotting what he thought to be an authentic weapon in the boy's possession.

Since when do police open fire on anyone who has a gun in their possession? I assume the kid pointed it at them, but you'd think the article would explain this story a bit more.

If your kid thinks it's a good idea to protect himself with a fake gun it might be for the best if the cops blow him away.

Charlie Warner, sergeant with Williamson County's Franklin Police Department, said while nothing as drastic has happened in his department, they've had some close calls and now, mark seized toy guns sealed in evidence bags with labels that read, "Not a real gun" because a grower number look so realistic.

Ok, that explains the lack of explanation in the story. 4,000 commas and a "grower number". Also, "nothing as drastic has happened." Good writing there...

If you're dumb enough to point a fake gun at a cop, you deserve to get shot.

boristhebulletdodger: Remember, citizens: teenagers do not have the right to self defense. They must rely upon the police to protect them at all times.

Of course not. This teenager (19) owns a handgun, and can use it in self defense if necessary (not that I ever want to, mind you).

But teens running around with a glorified squirt gun aren't going to be able to defend themselves any more so than they would have unarmed. However, they would put themselves in a position where the use of lethal force against them would be justified, because they appear to be armed.

It's a matter or pros vs cons. If you carry a firearm, you have the ability to defend yourself, but must consider the possibility that you may find yourself in a position where lethal force may be justifiably used against you, due to a misunderstanding of your intentions. If you don't, then you can't defend yourself as well, but have a much lower risk of generating threats against your life through the same misunderstanding.

Carrying a toy, though, puts you in a position where you are still unable to defend yourself, but may put yourself in grave danger should someone misunderstand why you have the gun. It's the worst of both worlds, and the police are trying to protect you by pointing that out.

If you can paint black over the orange tip of a toy gun, what prevents a criminal from painting an orange stripe over the tip of his REAL gun?

I used to be a kid (Jesus that is depressing to write), and I loved my toy guns, but I never got into the realistic looking ones too much. I liked the futuristic ones and the super soakers, but a lot of my friends had the Desert Eagle looking electric squirt pistols that made an awful racket. Oh, and the Megatron toy that transformed into a pistol was KICK ASS in my day. I got that taken away on my first day of Preschool because it was "a gun". I never got it back, but I still can see it clearly in my mind...or maybe that was my Nintendo Power Gun... who knows?

It seems to me that realistic looking fake guns are just a bad idea in general. It creates this odd gray area that, in all seriousness, is a bad thing when 1/24th of a second can matter. I would think that all "toy" guns would either have to be ALL orange, or be obviously so fake in appearance that common sense would easily rule it out as a threat. I know I sound like a nervous nelly or one of those "wont someone think of the children" types, but there is simply no reason why a kid cannot play with a stick shaped like a gun with just as much enjoyment as he can the hyper realistic looking MP-5. To the kid, its just a prop, so why not make it easier on adults who actually might have to discern between these two things?

When ESQ was young and dumb, we'd drive through the densely populated city with realistic-looking toy cap guns 'assassinating' people at bus stops, walking the streets, etc. It was great, stoned fun taking pictures of people's faces at the moment they realized there was a gun pointed at them making a loud noise.

Thankfully, this was San Francisco so nobody shot back....

This is old news. 8-10 yrs ago, this was going on in my neighborhood.

Some of my sons friends of friends had taken into their heads to paint the (realistic looking - 9mm or .45) squirt guns black.

They were farking about in my driveway, and I saw the spray can and the 'guns'.

I told the kids exactly what would happen:
"One of these crazy old ladies on the street will be looking out her window, and she'll see "a teenage black kid with a gun". "She'll call the cops...and if they don't shoot you when you turn around, you'll get arrested."

I confiscated the can of paint and two 'guns'. "If you want these back, have your parent come get them."

No one did.

A few weeks later, exactly that happened to another kid. Walking down the street...busted. House arrest all summer.

/I related this story here a couple years ago, and some damfool lambasted me for "abusive authority" and "confiscating private property" and "how dare you!"

"We want parents to understand the danger your kids place themselves in by placing their guns in their waste band or vehicle. This is not the appropriate place for these guns."

1.) Cue more anti-toy gun legislation
>>>>> Toy guns can ONLY be glow-in-the-dark yellow now
>>>>> All toy guns must be visible and holstered when not in use
>>>>> All toy gun ammo must be kept in a separate bicycle compartment while transporting toy gun.

2.) Where is an appropriate place for toy guns? How about up the a$$ of this grammar butchering author.

3.) Dear children, pellet guns are more effective than toy guns. PS, if you go to your local slum, real guns cost less than pellet guns.

Amazingly stupid ... anyone bluffing with a fake gun runs one hell of a risk of being stopped by someone with a real CCW or by police. I suppose there is a slim chance that someone might deter an attacker (one lacking a firearm, that is), but legal CC is available in 48 states in some form, and I think around 30 states are "Shall Issue" for anyone over 21 (I'd open it to any legal adult, but that's another topic).

Why are these asshats attempting to commit crimes with fake guns? Do they think there will be a lighter penalty compared to using a real gun? (are they right?) How embarassing would it be to get mugged with an Airsoft gun?

Dughan: If you can paint black over the orange tip of a toy gun, what prevents a criminal from painting an orange stripe over the tip of his REAL gun?

Nothing, really. The cops also freak the hell out about any gun that isn't a standard black or metal color. The "pretty" chick guns scare them because they look like toys.

And this is also why they shoot anyone pointing a toy gun at them. Your "gun" could be transparent and yellow, and you're going to be getting a few bullets in the chest if you whip one out and point it at a cop.

Not that I mind. That part I agree with. Pointing a fake gun at someone with a real gun means you're too stupid to live. If they die off before they breed (which in urban areas is about 14...) all the better.

Not that looking like a toy matters. Americans are scared of their own shadows anymore, and tend to piss themselves easily. Cops have been called in by panicked old women when kids run around with neon squirt guns and NERF weapons. "They have guns! OMGomg!"

Subby here.

If you click the video on the page, you get the story without the egregious grammar and punctuation, but with Geraldo wanna-be goodness.

The replicas in question have slides, hammers, etc. and some kid told the cops he had one for "protection". The only way it could protect you is if you used it as a blunt object.

Considering i have a friend that used a green transparent plastic uzi, and zip gunned it, three barrels, two of them a single round 22, one a 12 gauge round, theyd be wise in doing so. or the guns that are built into cell phones. Point ANYTHING in a threatening manner at a cop, get shot. but only if you POINT it.

The frame, grip and barrel are all plastic, so you can tell pretty easily if you handle it. And there's a little metal crosspiece you can see if you look down the barrel. But other than that, yeah, it's pretty authentic looking.

They have all sorts of similar ones here. (new window)

Funny thing is they want almost $300 for one. Couldn't you buy a real one for the same price? The kit I bought was less than $50, iirc (of course this was back in the mid 80s).
