TeddyBallGame: Happy Holiday Farkers of the other side. Enjoy winter. It sucked.

Enjoy summer, it was marvelous.

As technically we are on the leading edge after the International date line, I think our winter comes before yours!

And as a result of that pesky International date line, ANZAC Day is coming to a close now, but thanks to the moderator who greenlighted this. Better late then never.

ANZAC biscuits for all.

Yeah it has. It was 98° here in San Diego, California Monday!!

I had never really gotten into WWI history, but in recent years have done a little reading...I never realized what a horrific conflict it was. A travesty of politics and later of military command.

I raise a glass and salute the memory of those who fought, those who died and those who survived to tell the tale.

Here, here.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

The scene in Gallipoli--no spoilers, please--actually happened so I'll think on that for a while.

Damn straight it does. Think about how many different nations/cultural groups today nurse old grudges. Hats off to everyone involved for their forgiveness and their bravery.

Learned alot about the ANZAC troops at the Auckland Museum - enjoy your holiday, it's well deserved.

To my Aussie and Kiwi friends, from the ANZAC Day dawn service at the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio:

In Flands fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae (1972-1918)

Aussie Aussie Aussie! We will not forget.

Not at all. Nor the French or the Turks themselves and their representatives are present in Wellington, Canberra and Gallipoli itself. It's just that ANZAC Day has a special significance for the Australians and New Zealanders as we don't typically celebrate Remembrance Day on 11 November.
