I know there are those who will disrespect this woman for the spiritual basis of her attitude, but I applaud her. There is nothing to be gained by clinging to anger, hatred and resentment. He will get what he has coming to him, and she will move on and live her life without wallowing in her misery. She has my admiration and respect. Not many people have this inner strength.

I guess I'd have to know what Champagne he was drinking to judge this guy properly.

The nurse was left starving and thirsty in sub-zero temperatures while attacker Justice Ngema ateChristmas dinner with his girlfriend and celebrated his birthday with Champagne, vodka and cocktails.

The man was just trying to enjoy a nice holiday meal and there's an entire article committing character assassination against him? I guess the Atheism problem is really starting to rear its ugly head.

Anybody else notice that he could get a life sentence, then at the end of the article it states that he'll be deported after being released from prison?

WTF?

Lame - it would be perfectly easy - and i am not kidding - for me to dispose of the guy without any anger resentment or hatred. why it would bring a sweet smile and such joy to my heart to break the man's knee caps then smash his fingers with a hammer one by one. and i don't disrespect her either that's her choice.

My teenage daughter just broke her knee cap in February, so I know I couldn't wish that on anybody.

This woman is a better woman than I.

give me doughnuts: I would feel a strong need to shove a running chainsaw up his ass. If that means that she is a "better" person than me, so be it.

This. I spent the first 3 or 4 years of my adult life feeling "pity" for other people who I thought could change for the better. After realizing that going out of your way for someone does more harm than good in some cases, my attitude about it has drastically changed over the last couple of years.

IMO, holding grudges is okay if you have a good enough reason and are able to take action against the people that fark you over. If you can't do anything about it, sometimes it's better to just let it go.

If someone stuffed me in the back of a trunk to leave me for dead, the person should be tankful if the cops get them before I do.

I respect the wisdom of her attitude, holding onto anger and fear will only hurt a person further and the prevention of future assaults is out of her hands.
I'm not a wise person myself and I suspect such victimization would haunt me for me a long time.
Hell, it's done damage to my blood pressure and created useless rage just reading this story.

Came for this. Having "pity and hope" for someone does not mean it is Stockholm syndrome, which would be if you sympathized with him. She is avoiding letting him have a negative effect on her life. GOOD FOR HER!

But there is a sort of plain, unassuming beauty in admitting your natural feelings of hostility toward them that wrong you, and then letting it go when justice is served. On the other hand, affecting a smarmy, insane compassion toward them just makes it look like you're trying to make virtue out of impotence.

FTFA: "A brave nurse..."

And could we please stop ascribing bravery to every cute person who is subjected to unpleasantness? This woman was not called upon to show any kind of bravery. What was she going to do, run away? If hers is an example of bravery, what would a coward have done differently?

Epossumondas:
This woman is a better woman than I.

Not unless "better" == "forgiving" according to your ethics, and even then you can't know. There's nothing she can do to the man now, even if she wanted revenge. If she had been premitted to choose his punishment and she had let him go, then we'd surely be looking at some forgiveness.

"Life" in the UK is usually not really that. It'll probably be 20- or 25-years-to-life. Parole works similarly to the US: after 25 years (or whatever), if he seems to be at low risk of reoffending, he'll probably get out. Eventually.

Although we don't have separation of powers in the UK, so the government minister can over-rule the parole board if it's politically convenient.
