On the bright side the airfares to Mexico should go down soon.

During the SARS epidemic I spent 5 days in a very nice hotel in Hong Kong including air from the east coast of the US for ~600 USD.

More people died from safes falling out of windows than died from SARS.

So this too will be blown all out of proportion.

Wash your hands frequently and well. Unless you are immunocompromised you will be fine.

Off to Mexico next week!

There has been one near pandemic to date, between November 2002 and July 2003, with 8,096 known infected cases and 774 deaths (a case-fatality rate of 9.6%) worldwide being listed in the World Health Organization's (WHO) 21 April 2004 concluding report.

1918 Flu Pandemic: Among the conclusions of this research is that the virus kills via a cytokine storm, which explains its unusually severe nature and the unusual age profile of its victims (the virus caused an overreaction of the body's immune system-the strong immune systems of young adults ravaged the body, while the weaker immune systems of children and middle-aged adults caused fewer deaths).

The 1918 flu pandemic (commonly referred to as the Spanish flu) was an influenza pandemic that spread to nearly every part of the world. It was caused by an unusually severe and deadly Influenza A virus strain of subtype H1N1.

Swine flu: Influenza A virus subtypes H1N1, H1N2, H3N1 and H3N2 are all known to cause SIV infections.

Eep. If you'll excuse me, I need to go cower in my bunker / clean room...

774 deaths during the whole epidemic (which is indeed smaller than a pandemic) in a period of nine months? More people were shot in Detroit in that time period.

The risk of contacting SIV (swine influenza virus) is much less than that of being in a car accident on the way to work. The risk is certainly lessened with proper handwashing, which truly few people other than healthcare providers actually perform. (without looking it up try to see if you know proper handwashing technique)

Certainly there are places where you might wish to take extra precautions such as at a pig farm, when treating patients with possible SIV, or if you are immunocompromised (such as HIV and some cancer patients) or if you are very young without a fully developed complement of antibodies, or very old.

Vacationing in Mexico, even in areas where SIV is said to be endemic is no riskier than your regular daytime routine at home.

I have been an RN for years, and I did a COSTEP internship with the USPHS at the CDC, and I also worked for the USPHS for a time. If you require more information the CDC website (cdc.gov) will always have the most current information.

You are more likely to get Malaria (there were over 1500 cases in the US last year) than SIV, but the media feels like blowing SIV out of proportion.

Wash your hands, wear a condom.

Wild pigs, not-so-much, nor pigs that have enough room to roam around. When humans put pigs in too-small pens, you've got two places to be. At the food trough, or off on the other side. Don't shiat where you eat, so they shiat elsewhere.

When it gets too hot for the non-sweating porkers, they gotta roll in something to cool off. shiat's usually all there is.

So...unless your are some imbred, toothless, shine-swilling hick from Kentucky, who actually does fark his pigs...I think we are gonna be ok.

If you make widgets, and those widgets are bought by the public, who will be buying the widgets when the public is all dead? Who pays you? Might be time to start investing in fur and wampum futures.

Me personally, I'm thinking of investing in some bacon shortly. All this talk about it is driving me nuts.

774 deaths from one disease worldwide just isn't a pandemic in either my or the CDC's book. Washing your hands is in fact an adequate preventive measure against the flu virus, AND against a possible pandemic, because....

The real danger of any flu (swine, avian or Canada goose) is that it will mutate into a new variant and/or a new transmission mode, and begin a rapid spread. So far, the flu has remained sub-epidemic, because it is fairly difficult to contract--you have to put the virus into your body via contact. Thus, if you can avoid putting your contaminated fingers into your eyes, nose, mouth, etc., or if you remember to wash your hands frequently, you can avoid catching the flu.

IF, however, the flu were to become AIRBORNE, and transmit via droplet contact--if you could inhale the virus--then we'd see a true pandemic. (Yeah, you can catch flu now by inhalation, but it's not as easy...so far)

A few comments: most seasonal flu is also H1N1, so no need to panic simply on that. Still, there is reason for concern. using SARS as a reason why this is bs is apples to oranges, "aint even the same farking sport". Pandemic flus (which this is not, yet) are pandemic because the general population has no immunities. The severity of this swine flu has yet to be determined. The US cases have not been very virulent, and FWIW, I dont trust the claims from the Mexican Govt. Only 7 of the 14 Mexican cases actually were swine flu (of the cases that cdc evaluated, not the total).

Handwashing is a big piece of the puzzle, but flu is also spread via droplets, so watch out for sneezes and coughs too.

The bit on the news tonight said this is a combo of swine/avian/human and there is some evidence of human-to-human transmission. California's chief epidemiologist says it is very, very rare to have even 6 cases of swine flu - Mexico's already got 60 dead (new window). Am I going to run out and get a mask? No. Am I going to keep an eye on the news coming out of the CDC, yes. The media will go nuts over it and probably blow it all out of proportion but when states start activating emergency operations centers and alerting hospitals to take extreme infection control measures, I at least pay attention to the possiblities.

Yeah, try something authoratative. Jeezus K Rheist, Drude has half inch high letters that say NO PLANS TO CLOSE BORDER.

Try the CDC (new window), Mexico's IMSS (new window) -in Spanish, the INSP (new window), Mexico's CDC,

Watching the news at 11 they are just going nuts, they are interviewing University Professors in Wisconsin, playing 8 seconds of a CDC news confrence that said "The WHO is not declaring a pandemic," of course that suggests to most people that they might soon.

Mexico City and its environs has 20 Million people. Sixty or so have died from swine flu. The risk is remarkably tiny, and they are vaccinating people and pigs.

It is odd that the Swine Flu becomes a news hot topic during May Sweeps period which began this week. Look for lots of other local emergencies too like lead paint of some fire hydrants, horrible mold in the bathroom of city hall, and a pack of four poodles running loose and scaring the elderly.
