Hey subby - that parental responsibility crap doesn't float here in America...it is the responsibility of government to ensure that children are properly indoctrinated.

That or they just figure that parents these days are too lazy and/or stupid to do it themselves.

Just out of curiosity, who do you two propose teaches children whose parents are too lazy/stupid/absent to teach their own children?

The government isn't trying to take away your right as a parent to educate your children in you're own personal beliefs, it's trying to help the kids who have worthless parents to begin with so they don't turn into complete social degenerates.

So unless you two want to get together and start an after school program I suggest you both STFU.

On a side note, good luck fighting "sexting", that race was lost before it hand even begun.

Uh, isn't that the parents' job?

So is sex education -- that's worked out real well in certain parts of the country.

In all seriousness, I don't think most parents of teens are aware of sexting. But $25-35M for teaching children about the dangers of the internet seems a bit extreme. I'd think the school librarian, who should be staying on top of these type of trends as part of his or her job anyway, should be able to cover this in a lesson or two at the start of the school year for each class.

Last I heard, it was the conservatives that were getting butthurt about young girls having sex online. Young boys, however, that is AOK!

Ummm, if they are working to uncover what is going on, shouldn't it be called sexsting of the sexting?

People looking at each other - or pictures of each other - naked is a victimless crime and entirely benign. The problem is with adults getting involved the sex lives/exploration of a younger generation.

The cop, prosecutor, principle or parent who makes a big deal of this is every bit as much an immoral pervert as a pedo. If it's between people who are realistically peers, stay the fark out of it. They are not in danger.

What we have is a bunch of DAs and cops who like to harrumph all their outrage in public and then lock the door and close the blinds while they "sift through the evidence."

Step 1: *to sexting teen* If you send naked pictures of yourself to people I will beat the crap out of you.

Step 2: If teen disobeys, beat crap out of teen.

Where's my check?

Since the parents are cleaarly failing the answer is no.

This stupid theory that people SHOULD take care of their own kids etc etc was thoroughly destroyed by Jonathan Swift CENTURIES ago.

Face it we're not Houyhnhnms we're Yahoos. what better place to learn this than fark? Oh school. Any of you folks ever attend one?

ZooGirl [TotalFark] 2009-04-24 05:22:52 PM
Why don't they just tell parents to give their kids phones without cameras or text capability? Make some kind of law that anyone under the age of 21 can only use a phone for (gasp!) PHONE CALLS.

Well, at my house, the teenagers have to get a job and pay for their own extraneous things like cell phones. We provide food, clothing, shelter, gifts for special occasions, etc. Typical parent things. Loving parent things.

Anything else, they pay for it themselves...it doesn't take them long to figure out the cost of the things that are the most important. Sexting doesn't seem to be high on their list.

Go figure....

The Grinch 2009-04-24 05:24:53 PM
Menedez, D-N.J., said he is hopeful that educating teenagers, teachers and parents will stop children from sending explicit photos of themselves over cell phone and the Internet.

Ugh, this is why I hate this state. Menendez, you ignorant tool, it's a fool's errand to preach to teenagers against sex. We ought to be teaching them discretion, but domineering parents don't like to think that kids are hiding anything from them.

You seen under the misguided impression that schools actually have librarians. Here in FL some counties have cut music and art and they share a librarian, maybe your class gets to go once a month if you are lucky.

This is a good book you should read. It's about hoe people are irrational.

What is the logical corallary to this well estblished fact?

That political theories which rely on the assumption that people are rational, or insist that people should be rational, are doomed to failure.

It's the Cartesian idea of society and it is simply wrong-headed. It fails to deliver.

Hey kids, if you send pictures of yourself naked to some dude you have a crush on it might spread around the school and not only embarass you, but could get you into serious trouble with our very puritanical legal system!

Also, it makes you a dumb slut no matter what happens.

Okay, where's my $25 million?

Do they still teach Math, English, etc. in schools?

If so, the school day must be 11 hours long to accommadate all the other pet programs bieng taught.

No surprise that this comes from the state that doesnt trust it's citizens to pump their own gas.

For example taken together portfolio theory and the theory of efficient markets more or less exclude the possibilty of a major stock market crash. Theoretically, it should happen once in a billion years or so.

In fact, due to human irrationality it happens a lot more often than that. But the government and the banks refuse to admit it. That is the root cause of the economic problems we are having now.

And the same thing is true of sex education. The theory that parents "should" teach their children blah blah cannot lead to an useful political recommendations. Pretending it would is pretending we're Houyhnhnms.

Would you? Over half the voters in this country are so farking stupid they voted for Obama, and almost half are so utterly retarded they voted for McCain. A few of them are so absurdly out of whack they voted for write-ins that had no chance of winning as some sort of "protest". And the rest of the country? They're so drop-dead hopelessly FARKTARDED they didn't vote at all!

why can't the free market sort it out? what's next, special programs to teach people not to swallow tacks?

you know, in the socialist countries we're supposedly trying/not trying to emulate, they don't have these nonsense programs. they use the "redistributed" tax dollars to teach the three R's (of course, they have different letters!)

The US has been falling from the unrealistic puritan model of sexual maturity since its inception. Around most of the world, kids at the age of 10 and 11 are already "dating" in the mildest sense, with age of sexual maturity averaging around 14.

I'm not saying I would allow my daughter to fool around, but lord knows we all did when we were kids. The only difference is that the age is slowly falling to the world-wide average. Hormones beat out society, it would appear.
