Isn't criticizing the Beetles for the lack of sophistication in their music like criticizing the Wright Brothers for not having vector thrusting?

Making fun of the Beatles for being one of the most overrated bands is fine, and their music may have been simple and easy to play.

But I'll be damned if it wasn't some of the greatest music ever, and I guarantee with all the different diverse types of music out there now, you'll probably never find one that's going to be comparable. Or at least that so many different musical types can agree was, downright, just great music.

And look at my profile, it's not even the type of music I listen to. But I give credit where credit is due.

Rush does, indeed, suck - but that has nothing to do with complexity.

That trollingly good headline had to have been crafted by a musician, for other musicians. Well done.

Yeah, he was good enough, but let's not fool ourselves here: he wasn't even the best drummer the Beatles ever had.

well, andy white was probably more accomplished. but ringo, through his naivete, was more experimental, often accidentally so. some of my favorite drum fills of all time come from him.

I'm not saying he sucks. By analogy, Derek Jeter isn't the best shortstop on his own team, either. He certainly made a contribution to the Beatles.

I don't know if you're a musician or not, but I consistantly find myself stunned at how easy the beatles musics seems to be to play, yet how difficult it actually is. Sure, there's plenty of harder stuff out there, but as far as deceptively difficult is concerned, they were masters.

THIS! And you don't know how good Ringo was until you try to audioedit a Beatles tune and realize how perfectly he moderated the tempo for the different sections of a song.

Plus, he picked the right guys to hang out with.

I play six sting. I can play a few Beatles songs, never really tried to learn them though. But I can tell it's nothing that's going to be difficult as, say, any Eric Melvin solo.

But I give them credit regardless.

Beatles music is a lot of things; "simple" and "easy to play" are not among those things.

Ringo was responsible for a rock drumming innovation. He was the first drummer to put deadening material in his bass drum & to individually mike each drum. He tuned his drums lower too, to get a specific sound he wanted. Ask any drummer what they think of Ringo - he wasn't flashy, but technically great - he "felt" the music.

Also, he was recruited by the Beatles because he was far & away the best local drummer at the time, in a city full of bands.

The Beatles were a pop band. Possibly the best pop band EVAR...but a pop band, nevertheless. Minimal, relatively simplistic percussion is exactly what good pop music should have.

Overrated
: to rate or appraise too highly; overestimate.

You're are overrated when you don't have the hardware to back it up.
So let's see....hmmmmm if you're favorite band that you think is not overrated sold, say 75 million more albums, they would probably be over 50 million behind a band that was officially together for about 8 years. According to Wikipedia only the Beatles and Elvis have sold over a billion records worldwide. If you look at only RIAA, the Beatles have sold over 170 million units (only 42 million in front of Garth Brooks) but 58 + million in front of Led Zep and wait for it.....only 104 million in front of The Rolling Stones.

You know it's a damn shame that Ringo was such a crappy drummer, I mean if he would have been any good, The Beatles may have sold 100 million more records than your favorite band.

dickkead [TotalFark] 2009-04-24 03:46:08 PM

cleveoh 2009-04-24 03:46:59 PM
Ringo was/is held in pretty high esteem by his contemporaries, including Charlie Watts & Keith Moon. Max Weinberg & Dave Grohl also have praised him.

& he was good enough to play on the other 3 ex-Beatles solo records, when they could have picked anybody & drummers would have killed to get those gigs.

Listen to the "Love" cd. Many of those tracks bring out his drums parts very well.

What I don't understand is ... if everyone sez that Ringo was an adequate drummer ... then why did McCartney play almost all of the drum parts on the records once they stopped touring?

Hmmmm?

Well said. Dissing the Beatles just comes off ignorant to me. They are not my favorite band, but I do like them. But as a music fan, you have got to give them respect and credit. Their influence is monumental.

Basically, when people diss the Beatles I just assume they don't really give a sh*t about music. Or think they are cool for trashing them.

Ringo bashing just blows me away. The man played EXACTLY what each song needed, nothing more, nothing less. More importantly, he had the personality and humor to BE a Beatle. Watch the movies. Think of someone other than Ringo being there. Doesn't work. One of the reasons they brought him in the band was "star power". He was among the best drummers in town, but he also played in a band that drew crowds because of their showmanship and personalities.

Easy there, buddy. Until 1972 they are gold. And they've been pretty good ever since, with varying degrees of "millionaire's complacency vs. need to prove something to this generation's upstarts".

Listen to "A Bigger Bang". There is no way in HELL that retirees should be able to play with that much power and energy.
