Our troops will wear sneakers, and go in very quietly.

As frightening as that would be, I would sleep much, much easier at night with a nuke-less Pakistan. If you want a direct roadmap to international disaster, leave Pakistan alone.

Diogenes [TotalFark] 2009-04-24 02:10:48 PM
Sensible.

But I wonder if the Pakistani government itself has mechanisms in place to destroy the nukes just in case the goverment collapsed. Extracting them without such mechanisms would be hard enough.

Recoil Therapy [TotalFark] 2009-04-24 02:17:49 PM
Considering that the Pentagon probably has a plan in a file somewhere to invade Antarctica, I would hope that the Pakistani InvasionTM ones were a little more up to date than those for Operation Penguin Poop.

Nuke the nukes from orbit. It's easy.

They'll just need to pick a convenient disposal site.

When Pakistan eventually collapses into chaos emerges as a purely theocratic state with strengthened ties to Russia, the Pentagon has a plan to go into the country and seize its 100 nukes so the Taliban can't get them start World War III

Too frightened to RTFA, but I kind of think it might play out that way. References to 2012 to begin in 3... 2... 1...

Well, Obama said last year that he'd attack Pakistan, so it's reasonable to assume he has a plan.

bad_ed 2009-04-24 02:48:38 PM
I honestly hope it never comes to this.

FissionMan1 2009-04-24 02:49:21 PM
I'm not surprised and I'm very glad our government has a plan.

I just hope that it is not unilateral. Invading a country so quickly could be seen as an act of war to Pakistan's neighbors.

opiumpoopy 2009-04-24 02:49:26 PM
It had better be better than the plan to capture Saddam Hussein.

How many months did that take?

Ed Willy 2009-04-24 02:50:00 PM
How about rather than give them aid with no strings attached, we "buy" up their nukes and take them off their hands. Better yet, exchange their nuclear bombs and program for a promise of safe haven in the US should it all go down?

I suspect it's more likely to be taken as an act of war against Pakistan...

HERE'S a fun question for you guys:

Let's say the Taliban manages to get ahold of a couple of Pakistani nuclear weapons. Let's say they cart them off, and we manage to capture several of the guys injured during the theft. It turns out a few of these guys are well known, and probably know where the bombs are headed.

Question: you are Obama, CIA reports the above situation. All of the nukes stolen could easily fit on a small ship/donkey cart, etc. What do you do?

Zoophagous 2009-04-24 02:52:02 PM

I think the Pakistani military and the ISI spooks might well prefer the "side with the Taliban and keep our hands on our nukes" option.

Diet Sundrop 2009-04-24 02:52:28 PM
I would hope that the Pentagon has a plan for invading Pakistan. As well as Iran, Cuba, Canada, Venezuela, Mexico...

To have a plan is not the same as enacting said plan.

I have plans on what to do if a burglar enters my home; doesn't mean I am actually going to use them. That all depends on the burglars in my neighborhood.

Bucky Katt [TotalFark] 2009-04-24 02:52:40 PM
I'd be more concerned if they didn't have a plan. It won't work, but at least they do have a plan.

Isn't this a Rainbow Six video game scenario? If so, I may be able to help our country out. I just need that wicked neato sniper rifle and a British SAS guy or two to sacrifice.

GrooveMonkeyZero 2009-04-24 02:53:22 PM
Well, if it happens and we don't do something about it, I imagine India will, and not be as nice about it.

Having a plan is never really a bad idea, just in case.

With Taliban controlled areas now only 60 miles from Islamabad you can be sure there are a lot of people looking at the situation very closely.

In my opinion Pakistan is the most immediate and dangerous threat to international security in the world right now.

Interrogate the detainees, of course.

Glad I could help.

Even if the Taliban forces fail to capture the nukes, won't they still have the research papers, centrifuges, and scientists?

The Pentagon has plans for everything. How many days did it take the Administration to allow them to rescue one guy from pirates? How long would it take for them to activate this plan?

I don't konw why we just don't seize them now. We're already in the neighborhood. A prememptive cleansing is a worthy cause and will solve more problems then it creates.

I laugh at anyone who thinks a nuke, especially Pakistani nukes, would fit on a donkey cart.

Then I start combing through sat. Photos. And I let India know there are missing nukes.
