Actually, this guy IS a giant douchebag.

People who support MADD support terrorism.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Very bad move, Mr. President. This is my unhappy face. :(

Subby: Obama's pick for traffic safety czar wants to bring back 55, put speed cameras everywhere, and give you a DUI for looking at a beer

So in other words, he wants traffic laws to be the same as Australia's.

*sigh* I hate our laws.

If he becomes the traffic czar I'm joining the traffic Bolsheviks

Well, unless you believe that the idea of terrorism is to instill fear that is far greater than the actual threat at hand, in order to see an overzealous reaction. You know, like a legalized Al Qaeda, that doesn't blow you up, but makes you blow.

Technically true, but in reality the feds set traffic law. NHTSA uses grant money to bully and bribe states into enacting the federal will.

An intriguing argument. This makes the majority of modern "journalism" into terrorism. So... when are we blackbagging Glenn Beck?

I don't think most of the unconstitutional things he supports are actually going to fly, but the author of the article seems like he's whining about the consequences of being a complete asshole and driving an automobile while intoxicated.

I have not been very happy with my president this week, I wish he would get the DOJ to intervene in the SLO dispensary case also. I don't want 1984.

I don't usually back up troll-ish headlines, but FTFA: "He supports returning the 55 mph speed limit to our highways as well as roadblocks and random pullovers to make sure drivers aren't doing anything wrong."

Now, granted, one should pull the "citation needed" card, but so far, this pick does not bode well for the average citizen.

Headline: EDITORIAL: MADD about regulation

Now, I'm not dismissing the article out of hand, and I haven't read it or researched the context, so I am being a bit of an asshole here...

However, knowing that The Washington Times is a highly conservative rag where many talking points come from, am I to now assume that drunk driving is good?

I revile MADD with every fiber of my American soul.

I'm not sure about this.

Hurley, apparently, has been in charge of MADD only since 2005. MADD became genuinely evil before he arrived, and I have honestly not been attentive to its activities since then (perhaps its attention-whoring has been diminishing?).

Based on initial googling, Hurley doesn't appear to be a prohibitionist ideologue. We'll see.

I hate to break it to everyone who has never cared to travel the country or know how it works, but:

wants to bring back 55, put speed cameras everywhere, and give you a DUI for looking at a beer

None of this matters on a federal level. Yes, this means interstates. When you traverse I-95 through Virginia the 'limit' is 65, which is 'enforced by radar'.

Once you get to Georgia or South Carolina, it becomes 'MAXIMUM 70, MINIMUM 40'.

I have traveled to and from Maryland and Florida at least 24 times in the past ten years, at 90mph each way. I can assure you, even if the new "SPEED BOOZENAZIOMG" cared, you can't police that kind of stuff without resources. And let me tell you, you couldn't pay anyone to watch for speeders on 90% of the boring ass stretch I've driven.

Just don't get caught doing 90+ in Virginia unless you like going to jail. I don't know if it's statewide or not, but there are some counties (Goochland, for instance) where the judges have a reputation of putting people in the pokey for a few days for that. I know someone that it happened to.

/of course, if you're going that fast, you deserve a few days in jail anyway. people that think they're above the law piss me off to no end

random pullovers to make sure drivers aren't doing anything wrong.

The Supreme Court has already said no to this. I don't think a presidential appointee has the authority to override them.

SpeshilEdjukashin: Like I said, it's going to be a long two years...

What with the GOP spending most of their time these days praising Tea Parties (that are doing it wrong), bowing to the Limbaugh crowd, offering no real plan of attack in dealing with the economy (I read the memo, try again), and allowing idiots like the faction that wants to pass a resolution changing the name of the Democratic party, it's going to be a long eight years for you types.

Instead of crying about Obama's appointees as though your opinion MATTERED (any more than mine does), turn thine eye to the Republican party and clean house. Seriously. Kick out the religious crazies and Dittoheads. Admit defeat to the gays, and bring back the economic conservatives. Shiat, I might even vote for you bastards, then.

And please, for me...put a goddamn leash on Glenn Beck before he incites a riot.

Silovik 2009-04-24 03:03:39 AM
The problem with MADD is that it makes a lot of money. It was started to promote awareness against drunk driving and get stronger laws of prosecution, and they were very successful. But oh fark me if those Mothers didn't get too successful, if they closed up shop they might have to give back millions brought in, so why not push for more laws and more etc.

/sorry about general writing style, I have had a few, walked home though

So, what's the likelihood of this guy getting booted at the confirmation stage? Or, the obligatory has-tax-problems stage? What a stupid-assed pick from Obama, but then again he's been pretty consistently off his game when it comes to filling positions.

MADD should not be let anywhere near a regulatory position like this.

Good thing no one is proposing that MADD take over any regulatory positions then, huh.

I don't like the idea of having stricter and stricter limits on what constitutes driving under the influence. It seems to me that there are diminishing returns to safety as the legal BAC is set lower.

A limit of .04 will get a lot more people in trouble than a BAC limit of .08...but will it significantly improve public safety? I doubt it. This near-zero tolerance approach seems more an ideological maneuver than a practical one. But that's sort of par for the course in public policy these days.

Keep in mind that this is NOT a comment on the nomination of Mr. Hurley. I haven't actually looked into his views on this subject and I don't trust the Washington Times to be scrupulously honesty on the matter.

There is a whole world of difference between drinking and being drunk. And sleeping it off in your car? how is that dangerous?

On the subject of speed limits, the calculations for the 'safe speed limit' for a road have a large safety factor included. Will there be fewer fatalities at 55 than at 70? yes, but there will be even fewer at 25.

I'd have a lot more respect for MADD if they put more advocacy into public transportation or even publicly subsidized cab rides when public transportation is unavailable. Riding a city bus while drunk can actually be a lot of fun. I don't have have any problem with revoking a driver's license though I think jail time & the exorbitant fees are overly draconian.

The 55mph speed limit back in the 70s was a fuel conservation measure rather than a safety measure.

/cue the 'my car gets better mileage at 70' crew
