Here's the sad thing: the reason we've done this stuff to our own troops is to train them to endure torture. I mean, christ, it's a farking single sentence explanation of why she's so wrong.

Well, I will have to weigh this carefully against the opinions of that group of Judge Advocate Generals, former SERE instructors, former interrogators, etc.

That's a pretty impressive group of critics, but this is LIZ FKN CHENEY!!!

So, I'm wondering what's with the flurry of appearances by Cheney and co. lately. Is it a legacy thing or are they trying to swing public opinion in their favor for fear of being prosecuted? We're seeing more of Cheney now than when he was VP. If he knows what's good for him, he'll stop appearing because the more people see him, the less they like him.

Another thing, anyone notice the media is now more likely to use the word "torture" instead of "enhanced interrogation techniques"? Where the hell was this linguistic awareness when it was actually happening?

FTFY ^_^

Is this something of a ground swell response seeking inquiry into the whole torture thing, or is this congressional Dems flexing? Any step toward accountability for torture's a good one; I'm just genuinely curious.

What a dumbshiat. What does she think goes on at SERE school?

"Gentlemen, we are at war with terrorists. Terrorist who target civilians, and who kill women and children. They are pure evil. They've beheaded journalists on television. In the event of being captured by these evil men, we are going to waterboard you to prepare you for what will happen when you are a POW.

Because the most evil men in the world...will do something mildly uncomfortable that isn't really a big deal that you can totally shrug off. Any questions?"

I can not farking believe that there are people arguing

1) water boarding isn't torture, because we do it to train people on enduring torture
2) we should torture
3) telling people we torture makes us less safe, because now the torture methods won't be effective!!! WTF!!!

Cheney: "We're going to waterboard you"
AQ: "Ha ha. Now that we know, it won't do anything!!!"

They waterboarded a guy 183 times!!! I think he caught on we were going to waterboard him after at least the 10th waterboarding.

If people can be trained to resist this, WTF is the point of doing 183 times? Surely he would have been used to it by then if that was the case

Seriously WTF!!

We are farking seriously arguing we should be torturing???

God fuking damn it this is disgusting...

Correct, hence the need for laws governing the treatment of all detainees.

In the eight years between 1993 and 2001, how many Islamist inspired terrorist acts occurred on US soil ?

Alphax 2009-04-24 06:59:48 AM
Cheney and Rumsfeld took a look at the SERE program, that trained people to resist Chinese methods of forcing false confessions, and decided to reverse engineer it and use the original methods. Those methods cannot be used to get real information. From all appearances, they were chosen to force people to admit to a link between 9/11 and Saddam Huisain. And it didn't even work for that.

This is a real look at true evil.

Your right, they used to use "enhanced interrogation techniques" or "harsh interrogation techniques" before the witch hunt began:

In September 2002, four members of Congress met in secret for a first look at a unique CIA program designed to wring vital information from reticent terrorism suspects in U.S. custody. For more than an hour, the bipartisan group, which included current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was given a virtual tour of the CIA's overseas detention sites and the harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk.

Among the techniques described, said two officials present, was waterboarding, a practice that years later would be condemned as torture by Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill. But on that day, no objections were raised. Instead, at least two lawmakers in the room asked the CIA to push harder, two U.S. officials said.

Oh well, whatever keeps the freefalling economy off the front page.

That needs to sink in to every American. That is the face of the USA that has been presented to the world for the past decade. Consider how many bomb strapping terrorists have been created in this time.

Yeah, I agree. The Washington Post is nothing but a damn Pulitzer Prize winning rag.

From the same article:
Individual lawmakers' recollections of the early briefings varied dramatically, but officials present during the meetings described the reaction as mostly quiet acquiescence, if not outright support. "Among those being briefed, there was a pretty full understanding of what the CIA was doing," said Goss, who chaired the House intelligence committee from 1997 to 2004 and then served as CIA director from 2004 to 2006. "And the reaction in the room was not just approval, but encouragement."

Frankly I think this is a very clever play by Obama. I'm coming to admire enormously his ability to shape the political battlefield before he engages the enemy (just like Colin Powell would do).

If he had gone after the Bush/Cheney henchmen right away, the GOP and its proxies would wheel out the "Partisan witch-hunt!#@!!" talking points.

So what does Obama do? First he says he's not planning to prosecute CIA officers who simply followed orders they'd been told were lawful [notice the implied contrast to the Bush regime's handling of Abu Ghraib...]. But he carefully leaves the door open. Then he waits...

...And pretty quickly there is an upswelling from the public and the media demanding that somebody be held accountable. If not the officers then who? Well, I guess it has to be the people that authorized the torture. "I didn't want to appear partisan", says Obama, "but the American people demand accountability".

And of course, the increasingly ridiculous defense of these practices by Republicans plays right into his strategy.

Oh and Rudy Giuliani: in case you're still wondering, this is what a "community organizer" does.

Why do we as a country need to address this? Republicans did it- with bipartisan approval (Pelosi, Feinstein, Rockefeller for example), end of story. No amount of retrograde justice is going to make it any easier to bear for the prisoners that went through the torture.

Let torture de permanently attached to the professional reputations of those involved, in both political parties, and let it go. Plus, if the CIA cannot mount an intelligence operation without torturing some people then perhaps they aren't that good at what they do.

Good. Let the whole truth come out. And anyone who knew about this should go down, D or R. Honestly, do you think any left-winger gives a rat's ass if Pelosi or Reid get raked over the coals? Hell, most of us would love to see it.

Good analysis. It's no doubt that Obama is a skilled politician but there's also the issue of political sensitivity. By releasing the memos, he made it seem as if he committed a huge act of bravery and the subsequent Republican response only strengthened that sentiment. I'm not sure, however, that he is going to take this all the way to prosecution of those at the top (whether Republican or Democrat).
