(Idolator) Interesting Music piracy dates back to 1897, according to NY Times archives story claiming pesky Canadians took sheet music, shamelessly copied them and sold fakes to US customers. 100 years later they give us Celine Dion. Bastards   (idolator.com) divider line 26

I have it on good authority that Thag stole Ugh's unique stick clack stick clack rock slam rock slam stick clack lip smack beat a good 8,000 years before that and shamelessly used it to woo barely upright pseudo-monkeys from the bordering hills.

i remember playing a chart called "norvegian wood" in high school band. not "norwegian" wood, mind you. it seems the sheet music to the former was a lot cheaper.

This used to happen during operas in Europe as well. People would record what the musicians they were responsible for in short hand and then transcribe it into a full score after the show. The good ones would have a score for sale on the street outside the show within minutes of the final curtain.

Damn Canadians. They're all a little bit shifty.

But on the other hand, they did give us Alanis Morissette, that almost makes up for the whole Celine Dion thing.

If there's nothing on that list that you like then you just don't like music.

(and those are just the bands that have made a name for themselves outside Canada. There's a zillion bands from the Shuffle Demons to 54-40 that are great but are virtually unknown anywhere outside Canada)

Good list but you gotta add The Band and The Joel Plaskett Emergency.

The above list (Herinafter "the List") is wholly for entertainment purposes and is not intended as a reference source. The List does not purport nor does it intend to be a definitive accounting of all Canadian bands who have broken the charts outside of Canada. You (herinafter "the End User") save and hold harmless the creator(s) of the List from any claims or damages which may occur due to the End User's use of the List. Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball.

Oh yes. Guys like Beethoven and Mozart would hand out sheet music at the beginning of rehearsal, and collect it again at the end, to prevent the musicians from "renting" it out to unscrupulous publishers before the music premiered.

Classical musicians are far and away the most blatant pirates when it comes to sheet music. Orchestras I've been in have ranged from "try to avoid it but make copies if necessary" to "Fark it, rent one set of originals and copy away"

I was our band librarian in High School (band geeks ftw) and we would not have been able to afford a band program if we bought originals for everyone. It was the same in university and in the community bands I play in now.

In the C19th and early C20th, American publishers were dead against copyright and routinely ignored the rights of European artists as long as they were making money from ripping off their content. Once they could make more money protecting US content than stealing European content, they mysteriously grew a pair of morals.

The whole copyright debate has never been about ethics or rights of the creator. It's always been about how corporations can make the most money. The UK just extended the copyright on existing works... because that will somehow mysteriously make Cliff Richard travel forty years back in time and record a few more hits because he can be more rewarded for them today. Or something.

True success for a Canadian artist is when they leave Canada for warmer climates and those of us stuck in this frozen shiat hole in the winter become very jealous.

Sorry about

Celine Dion
Nickleback
Parachute Club
Skinny Puppy
Images in Vogue
The Grapes of Wrath
Our Lady Peace
Avril Lavinge

Not sorry about

Neil Young
Leonard Cohen
Rush
Payola$
TPOH
Simple Plan
Harlequin
Trooper
Boys Brigade
Don Messer
Stompin' Tom Connors
Irish Rovers
Feist

Sounds about right, I'm currently playing with a small community orchestra. If it weren't for the good graces of the U of M and EMU music libraries, we'd be forced into rampant piracy.

The orchestra

Stephen Foster, the first great American songwriter, died a poor man in 1864 because his sheet music was pirated.
