Wow. In about 30 years time these people (the ones still alive) are going to be going on the news apologizing saying "Well that's just the way it was back then".

The same way old former white Alabama legislators these days defend voting against black rights in the 60's. "Well yeah I voted against inter-racial marriage and giving blacks rights, but that's just the way it was back then".

WTF?

She actually gave a good answer for a beauty contestant.

"While I believe in the legal right, I'm personally against it." - if I'm not mistaken.

That's actually quite the pussy answer.

DRTFA, but did they extend the "freedom fries act" as a rider on the bill?

Hooray for celebrating hatred.

Mark my words: Someday we will look back on this time of gay-rights denial just as shamefully as we now do the pre women's-suffrage era, and the days when blacks were legally considered 3/5ths of a human being. How can ANY thinking person support legislation that designates ANY other human as a second-class citizen in 2009?!? For chrissakes, gay marriage HURTS NOBODY!

Wait, I said "thinking person." That's giving the right-wing Christian types too much credit. I love how they try to unconstitutionally legislate their own narrow-mined religious morality predicated upon the notion that homosexuality is a choice, and simply one they don't agree with. And not a single one of them has YET been able to come up with a decent answer to: "So, when did you choose to be straight?"

Assholes.

You must have missed the part where she contradicted herself, then said "in my country, California."

Which begs the question: Is Alabama saluting the stand against same-sex marriage, or recognizing her as a fellow idiot?

It's almost certainly both. But I guess it is good they are spending time on this, I'd hate them to spend time feeling guilty for raping the education budget, which has been cut something like 20% over the last two years.

Not all of us are idiots here in Alabama. Not all of us are backwards Bible thumping gay bashers either. And if I remember correctly, California (the paragon of progress) recently went one step further and passed discriminatory LEGISLATION against gay marriage.

There's assholes everywhere man.

In fact CA's prop 8 took it to a new level and actually revoked a right that gay couples had previously had in the state. Most states passing gay marriage bans had yet to allow gay marriage. It made the passage of prop 8 just that much more bitter for gay couples.

It was killing me every time I'd hear a Prop 8 supporter decry the backlash and claim that the gays and their supporters were just bitter because they lost on it. Well then what the hell was Prop 8 if the law was already on the books?

I have been informed, however, that the further south I'd go the more scared I'd be.

Prop 8 was in direct response to a recent judicial decision invalidating a ballot initiative passed around 2000.

My brother lives in Huntsville and works at a one of the many NASA/defense contractor companies there. Its like a little bubble of intelligence, if you go outside that (esp south) it gets ugly quick.

We're sane here in Huntsville. All the technology and industry means the town is intelligent. Can't say the same for the rest of the state.

Actually we signed the 13th amendment on December 2, 1865.

Neat fact: Alabama has the longest constitution in the world!

"At 357,157 words, the document is 12 times longer than the average state constitution, 40 times longer than the U.S. Constitution, and is the longest still-operative constitution anywhere in the world (the Constitution of India, the longest national constitution, comes in at approximately 117,369 words, making Alabama's constitution approximately three times longer than India's)."

We've been discussing changing it for years and years and years...

Yah...there's nothing wrong with it.. if you're of the opinion that bigotry, prejudice and discrimination aren't "wrong". I suppose you could realistically make that argument about any subject as long as it was just somebodies opinion couldn't you?

I don't think that's the issue that the headline is taking. That "having solved all other problems" should be a tip-off.

/my only issue with her "discourse" was her assertion that in America, gay folks have the right to get married. Yeah, in like four states they do, sweetheart.

Mayah 2009-04-23 06:16:32 PM

The majority has no right to vote on a minorities' rights.

Prop 8 was stripping someone of their rights because you don't like them. It's no different then passing Jim Crow laws.

Why is a screaming fag a judging a female beauty pageant anyway? Perez Hilton is qualified to judge Rubyjock's NSFW photos...not a beautiful blonde.

As a Californian, I found prop 8 to be disgusting, vile, and a wonderful example of how close-minded and bass-ackwards some people can be. That said, I have no problem with the woman's statement. Whether or not someone likes gay marriage is irrelevant to me, really. As long as that bigotry is not enshrined it law, it is a personally held view, and freedom of thought and speech protects that.

On another vein... those who got all whingy because she lost points for being a bigot are not considering something. In theory, the winners of these jackass contests are aiming for an ideal, not to represent the current crop of numbnuts. Ideals are highly individual, and therefor highly interpretive. That post from faux channels talking heads yesterday brought out all kinds of asinine.
