Although I agree with the sentiment, most of the worlds oxygen is made by the ocean.

Somehow I think subby would feel just fine in ignoring that Brazilian logger and climate change.

/and then he'd pick up the soccer mom and take her back to his sprawling double wide for a night of hot Faux News watching

I'm pretty sure that I've heard "deforestation" mentioned as a big problem. Many, many times.

Apeboy 2009-04-23 11:05:52 AM
dnrta but agree with the headline.

Agree or disagree with Greenpeace but at least the have the nads to take the fight to the whalers at sea, not patting themselves on the back at the local Starbucks biatching about the latest Long John Silvers faux crab meat value meal.

Um, greens have been screaming about deforestation for years. Without the rain forests, huge swaths of Brazil become desert which will have a serious impact on climate.

Seriously. I remember deforestation's campaigns as one of those things that everyone could get behind...as opposed to the more contentious "fighting (anthro) global warming" concept that's proceeded Al Gore's efforts.

That's what I don't really get--I'm all for conservation, but where's the push for stuff that everyone agrees on? Seems like we oughta hit that first before moving on to whether your SUV gets 18 or 20 mpg.

Seriously? Deforestation has been an issue since before SUVs even hit the market. This isn't like some hidden mystery.

Um anybody forget the late 80s and 90s, when the foresters were targeted? I'm just assuming it's not as big of a deal anymore because of all the recycling and less paper use (due to the internet age). I could be wrong, but i certainly do remember all the rage over clearcut foresting of the amazon.

Because it might result in some people making less money. Also, gluttonous people don't want to be bothered to do things like buy more efficient cars or change their lightbulbs or put on a sweater once in a while.

ah the "shades of grey" argument. If you argue black, the other side argues white and the people in the middle assume grey. Its a common tactic; if your opponents point is close to the truth, try and push their message further toward one of the poles, uninformed people in the middle will then gravitate toward the grey spot in the middle. but since you moved the white pole, the grey spot is now closer to your original point!

Everyone defending the "greens" because they are agaoinst deforestation too need to re-read thsi farkling article.

EU policies promoting a market for biofuels triggered the destruction of Indonesian rain forests in favor of palm plantations.

Meanwhile, the forestry industry has argued that their monoculture plantations in Asia, Africa, and South America deserve credit as carbon sinks, but the data show that these biological deserts are actually spewing out carbon dioxide. We don't have federal climate change legislation in place in the United States, but the Obama administration is pushing for a carbon tax in the new budget. Conservationists now have an apparent ally in the White House, so let's tell him to slow down and get those forest protections in place before the carbon-conscious spill any more blood.

Every cent of tax you put on fossil fuels and every penny you pay to subsidize biofuels makes cutting down rainforests more profitable (nevermind shrinks global food supply).

By making cutting the use of fossil fuel their primary goal, they have farked forests.

globalwarmingpraiser [TotalFark] 2009-04-23 01:18:53 PM
In the US logging companies tend to have tree farms replanting as much as they cut down. In Brazil most of this is for farm land. If there was an introduction of modern farm techniques, including such evil things as fertilizer, along with crop rotation this would not be near the problem. If only there was some way to optimize crops, say like adapting them to new environments with science that would help too.

Artifically making fossil fuels more expensive and propping up bio diesel is just plain stupid when it comes to clean energy. Not to mention shelfing nuclear power.

Lightbulbs burn out and have to be replaced anyway. Cars don't last forever either. That's not "needless consumption".

None of his suggestions require needless consumption. When your old incadescent light bulb burns out you need a new one anyways so you might as well replace it with a compact flourescent light bulb. Same with your old car.

I seriously doubt Edsel is recommending that people smash perfectly good lightbulbs/cars to go out and buy new ones. The fact that you jumped to that conclusion is very telling.

I'm more terrified by the swirling continent of garbage and debris that's between San Fransisco and Hawaii. Why? All the oceans' water swirls through there in the currents and spreading the toxins and poisons to other bodies of water. Non native barnacles and parasites are getting free rides on decayed lawn furniture to areas not equipped to deal w/ them. Fish nibble on plastic particles and in essence starve to death. The food chains are breaking down pushing more over fishing and threatening other animals.

Need I go on?

Really, how often do you find yourself replacing light bulbs? I haven't had to replace more than two in the last 6 years.

Properly maintaining and extending the life of an older car is far more "green" than letting it simply rot in a scrap yard.
