I think they're still trying to fold that one up. Damn thing gets all bunched in the middle.

It's tentative but a good first step. However, Turks are soooo far from not just acknowledging the genocide but even just accepting the catastrophic pain that was inflicted on Armenians during that time.

As long as they remember to make that left turn at Albuquerque, they should be OKAY.

Perhaps as well the Turks do see dealing with Armenia as another hoop they need to jump through so they can (finally) get into the EU. Who knows?

Yeah, and this is a shame. The EU does themselves no favors when they keep on giving Turkey their entrance into the organization is just over the rainbow.

There's that and there's also the economic dimension. A closed border means an underground economy that can't be normalized and taxed. Armenia's a small, landlocked country and regionally Turkey is an economic powerhouse. A couple of years ago the president of Armenia came out in support of increased trade with Turkey that did not depend on Turkey's recognition of the genocide. The Armenian diaspora were of course not happy with that.

Knowing Turkey, this will somehow end up being bad news for the Kurds.

That and seems like Turkey is the most stable of their neighbors. The diaspora don't have to live with that reality, etc.

Turks have this really wierd Pavlovian reaction to the Armenian Genocide.

You mention it, and they start foaming at the mouth before screaming that it is nothing more than a myth, that it was a time of unrest and lots of Turks died as well.

I'm so glad nobody around here would ever drop into knee-jerk defense mode at the merest mention of a country's misdeeds.

As part of the Armenian diaspora I support any rapprochement between Armenia and Turkey, or any other of it's neighbours for that matter.
