(Paste Magazine) Dumbass MF DOOM admits an impostor performed for him but takes exception to the term "impostor" since he chose to do it, hired him himself and that's the artistic direction he's taking. That's his story and he's sticking to it   (pastemagazine.com) divider line 33

That seems to me to be in keeping with the habits of Dr. Doom. I see no problem.

That's the benefit of wearing a mask onstage. You can quit anytime and send someone else out. As long as they can do a decent enough impression, you can theoretically continue forever.

"The man I inherited it from was not the real MF Doom, either. His name was Cummerbund. The real Doom has been retired 15 years and living like a king in Patagonia."

I heard they do this with the characters at Disneyland too. Shhhh...

I think this whole situation is so lame. He basically says that fans go to shows only to hear the music, not to see him perform the music. If people only wanted to hear it they would just buy the cd. People go to live shows to see the artist perform. If this was his 'artistic' intention he should have publicized it up front. He made money off people thinking they were seeing DOOM.

/not really that salty
//maybe a little

i think the whole situation is hilarious. i'm a huge doom fan but wouldn't go to one of his shows. not because of this, but because rap shows tend to be pretty boring, and that goes double for an overwight guy in his mid 40's wearing a mask.

and that's the problem...we gotta support GOOD hip-hop by buying tickets to their shows. Not sayin' you should or shouldn't see MF Doom, but there are PLENTY of good hip-hop artists live.

there really aren't. there's a handful at best.

i stopped going to rap shows a few years ago because they're all boring. of the multitude of shows i've been to i can say that jurassic 5 and the pharcyde were worth the money, and that gangtarr made me want to go to sleep.

/it was entertaining seeing el-p get a pint of guinness thrown at his head when he was retarded enough to say that ireland was part of the uk at a show in dublin.

Doom is one of the best rappers alive, but the two times I have tried to see him live he has failed to show up. I will continue to listen to his records (Madvillainy is in my all time top 5) but I am not so interested in seeing him live anymore.

Yoko Ono and John Lennon did this 40 years ago. They called it "bagism". They'd arrive at an event wrapped in a fabric bag, so you couldn't tell if it was really them or not. It was a conceptual bit about identity/celebrity.

/I love Yoko Ono. Grapefruit for the win.

He'll make a lovely Dread Pirate Roberts.

Are we getting so damn lazy we're even outsourcing performance pieces? At this rate, I should get a moderate left-wing schmuck in Sri Lanka to rant on FARK for me...

Dumbass.. the first step in hiring imposters is.... wait for it.... DONT TELL PEOPLE THEY ARE IMPOSTERS!!!!! Then book shows all over the place and pretend you can teleport!

He was already sussed out by more than a few fellow rappers for doing this. This is damage control.

Most performers think this devalues the effort and expense they put into their shows, and some have even posted online diatribes against DOOM for doing this.

I'm not a fan of the guy, so I really don't care.

Yes, a lot of other rappers were not happy about it. I remember reading one rapper's "Letter to DOOM" in which he claimed that clubs stopped booking rap artists because of their experiences with DOOM imposters. Rapper's don't like it when people stop them from getting money.

deevo 2009-04-22 09:59:17 PM
I saw him several years ago and he did kinda suck. It was a huge show, Big Daddy Kane, Pete Rock, Little Brother, Count Bass D, but DOOM was the headliner.

Talib Kweli came out and DOOM (or someone like him) beatboxed to some Talib songs... looking back, I think that was just an attempt to save his ass, the a capella CD must've started skipping or something.

Btw, that Open Letter To DOOM was a myspace bulletin posted by Cunninlynguists, after the impostor, "slightly less rotund" masked man ran out of the club mid-set and a riot nearly ensued and the club owner said he wasn't going to have anymore of that darned rap music. Once that was out, most people with their head in the community lost all respect for DOOM. Except for those bros who will pay $300 for limited-edition metal face Dunks. He's got his niche, man.

Oh well. To each his own. At least my heroes don't do shoes. They just reissue classic out of print reggae records and cut dub plates on the side to make a buck.

Link wouldn't load for me... but if the headline is true, this is lame of DOOM. Fans come to the show to see you and support you, and you repay them by sending someone else out to perform your songs?

/Madvillainy is in my top 10
